Default I Just LOVE 108" Wide

This arrived today. It's the backing for my next Boxed Squares quilt. At $21.98 a yard, that works out to about $8.79 a yard if it were the regular 44 inches wide. It will be plenty for my backing, and there will be some leftover to be on the front of a future project.

Its great when you find something you can use, and then a bargain besides.

That is gorgeous fabric. Right now I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to piece the back of a quilt that's about 120"x108" in size, so the back will have to be about 128x116. Even wide fabric wouldn't quite do it. This is probably my least favorite part of making a quilt - figuring out how to piece a back from the fabric I have left from the front.

Dunster,
This is the back of a quilt that I saw in a show a few years back. I think the lady was very creative in the way she pieced it.

I was just looking at Carolina Cotton website and could not believe their price for wide backing--as low as $8.99 a yard!!

I just came from our lqs and choosing fabrics for a new project, where I was told the backing fabric I had chosen for the quilt top (I didn't realize it was a wide backing, I just liked the fabric) is more loosely woven than the fabrics which are not wide backing fabrics. The sales lady discouraged me from mixing that particular fabric in my piecing of the top because it would wear faster than all the other fabrics in the top. I took her advice, put that bolt back and made another selection. I never knew that backing fabrics are more loosely woven. She said it's to make handquilting easier. Always learning....So you may want to carefully check yours out.

All the 108" backing fabric that I have bought has been the same quality and density as the topping fabrics. Perhaps that particular bolt was like that, never heard anyone say that about 108" backings. I buy mine from Thousands of Bolts and they are name brands (Hoffman, South Seas, etc.). I usually pay about $9.95 to $13.95/yd for these. Best price I have seen and good selection.

I purchased the wide backing against a lqs suggestion. Took it home and washed it. I did buy a little extra because I always allow for shrinkage. Turned out just fine. I paid about $8-9 a yard for it. She wanted me to purchase a different brand that was about $2-3 more. Saw her a few weeks later and she had the audacity to say "It probably didn't turn out very nice." Haven't been back since and won't go back. I did ask her if it wasn't of good quality then why have it in the store?" You can have quality fabrics and then better quality fabrics. If you're going to have inadequate fabric, you shouldn't be in business.
