Default suggestions/advice wanted

I set out to make a block for a contest. Due to a sinus infection, this design won't be entered, but I do want to make it. I look at it one way and another but I am unsure of the best way to construct it. Help please!

It is a classic English Paper Pieced block. Generally you start in the center with the star & work your way out in rounds.

It might be a classic English Pieced block-I really don't know about that. However, I do know it can be sewn using some "Y" seams. They are not difficult to do if you mark the corners carefully so you know exactly where to start and stop your stitching. It is a beautiful block. As I look at it, there are several approaches to doing it.

Deb Tucker ruler!!! The center star is a lemoyne star and she has amazing videos on how to do this. I made several quilts with this ruler and would never do it any other way.

Here is the link to the video:

I love her rulers and own almost every one of them!

Hope this helps.

I think I would construct the 4 corner pieces separately. (The ones with the diagonal strips and the squares. They seem to stand out as separate pieces to me) That would leave your center Lemoyne star with two strips and a triangle going in north, south, east and west directions. Then attach the corner squares using Y seams. Interesting block ut not for the faint of heart!

I am a great fan of HSTs, also. I love both Lemoyne stars and the faux one in the Carpenters' Star and have made multiples of both. While I have no problem with the star part or Y seams, once I started, I was unsure how to complete the quarter blocks.

There are no HSTs in that block as designed. A lemoyne star (the center building block) is not built on right angle triangles, it is 45 degree diamonds. Changing to HSTs will give a similar look, but is not the same block.

I see two options with this design - accept the mutitude of Y-seams (they really aren't that bad) or split the squares, and the triangles on the edges so they have a seam line down the middle.
If you stick with the pieces as drawn, I would assemble this in quarters. First, the upper left - a center square surrounded by 4 diamonds, then add the two brown triangles. Then add the next sides - the red/green diamonds and the yellow/pink diamonds. Make 4 of those. Join , and use y-seams to add the 4 triangles that connect these quadrants.
