I recommend the featherweight, if you can find one. A few weeks ago, my husband had to go somewhere on business, so I went along, taking my featherweight and fabric to keep me occupied while he was in meetings. Worked GREAT.

I can also recommend a Singer 301. Some call it the featherweight's "big sister." It's a full size machine, but made of aluminum, so it's lighter than a cast iron machine would be. Got mine at a garage sale for $20. It's an awesome machine.

However, if traveling for more than a few days, I'd probably have to take my embroidery machine as well.

I've seen featherweights for $300-$400. I wouldn't buy another machine unless it was less than that. I want a featherweight, but it's not in my budget right now.

I have a 31' Carriage Lite. I take my Featherweight with me and a 24" ruler, my supply box, and a combination cutting/ironing mat with us. I take a sweater box of material. If I get down to the need to sandwich a quilt, I just buy the batting somewhere on the road and then just start quilting. My biggest problem is NOT buying any more fabric for awhile. I have a Singer 66 that I carried for years before I got my first featherweight. It was heavier, but worked just as well.

By the way, I, as stated, did get my beautiful 221 Featherweight on Ebay and I paid less than $200 (including shipping) and it is a fantastic machine. If you watch and bid carefully you can get them for way under $300-$400. I also just won the bid for a 301a - It will be fantastic also, I am assured. (getting it for $165 including shipping.) Just when you bid, make sure the seller is highly recommened...and you will be fine. Remember these machines have metal gears...so they really are so much better than the pastic ones. I honestly prefer sewing on my Featherweight. I have the Viking Sapphire 875 and it is a great machine..but for normal sewing and piecing for quilting, I love the Featherweight.

I got mine from Sewingmachinesteve.com and he refurbishes machines and then resells them so it's almost like a new machine only better. He's very good to deal with and I have a machine down there being rebuilt right now.

with a feather weight you have only the one stitch. With the Janome you have a variety
