Thickest fabric for sashing?

You could feel around in the bottomweights fabrics. The twill, rodeo and sportswear fabrics are quite a bit heavier than your cotton quilting fabrics but lighter than the denims. But, if you have a black cotton you like, I agree with just adding interfacing.
