I misunderstood  To use the cutter on my Janome you push the button, and it cuts the thread. (Auto thread cutter button)

Found a really good use for my auto thread cutter button the other day. Was quilting a lap quilt, did something dumb, and jammed up the thread -- on the bottom side of the quilt. Tugging at the quilt didn't help and I couldn't get under the quilt to use scissors. What a mess. Thread cutter to the rescue! One snip and I was able to get the quilt out from under the needle.

Question - the cutter leaves the bobbin thread just long enough to peek out from the throat plate. How do you "grab" the bobbin thread, either before inserting the quilt under the needle or after, to bring the bobbin thread to the top before sewing? If I don't do that, the thread gets all jammed.

You push the needle up/down button the needle will stay down, now push up/down, and the needle will come up with the bobbin thread, that is how my Janome 6600p, and 1600p works, hope this helped.

Thanks, I'll try that! Still getting used to this new machine.

Are you referring to the automatic thread cutter, which has a button to push, or a tiny hook with an even smaller razor blade in it that usually is on the left side of the machine?

The member with the Janome 6600 has only a button to push and all threads are automatically cut..no tails...no wild threads on your clothes, furniture and husband...

I love my 6600 and the main reason is the thread cutter for piecing.

But if you need a convenient manual cutter, I beleive they sell them to stick on the side of your machine. Might be worth a look see. If you are like me, I hate having to pickup and put down scissors. I have put nicks and scratches in my previous machines with my scissors.

No, I mean the push button thread cutter. My machine has the usual thread cutter on the side, so I have both on this Sapphire.

I know what you mean about picking up the scissors but its SO automatic now, I don't even think about ... unless my small scissors, that I use for thread cutting, are somewhere else in my sewing room. :-( Habits are hard to break!

[quote=Sewsweet]I have a Janome 6600 and 1600p thay have thread cutters and knee lifts and I love them. My cutter is on the front by the tension dial.[quote=marsye]

Sewsweet, I have the Elna which is similar to the 6600, and my automatic thread cutter cuts the bobbin thread so short that the top thread won't even pick up the bobbin thread. Do you ever have this problem?

Ah ha! That's what I was trying to describe in an earlier post. Someone suggested use the up/down needle a couple of times to pull up the bobbin thread.

I have one on my new Pfaff Grandquilter. Absolutely love it! Wish there was one on my 10 year old Bernina. I've noticed that when using the thread cutter I don't un-thread the needle when I start sewing the next piece. That's a constant problem with the Bernina. Seems to waste a lot of thread.
