I use a small paint brush. It gives me great control. Also I use those little medicine cups with about a teaspoon of glue at a time. They both wash out with a little bit of vinegar.

do you water down the glue or use it full strength? How far apart do you go?

Just today finished glue basting a quilt that is 96x96.....I don't thin the glue, or use special tips.....straight from the bottle, cap wide open......holding the bottle with both hands and bending the bottle to get more pressure.....above the quilt about 12", moving bottle back and forth to make a "grid" of lines about 2-3" apart......not an exact science, if you get a blob just smooth it out a bit with your finger, will make a hard spot when dry, but quilting through it is not a problem......I let mine air dry as I use hubby's pool table to spread it out, but ironing works too if you have the right surface.

Default Glue tips

eBay is a good source. Also google "henna applicator" you can find these easily. Bottles have a range of tip sizes available. I thin with a little water and dribble it on.

You screw off the cap and screw on this tip. It makes a very fine line of glue and does not get clogged. Afterwards I screw the original cap back on the bottle and rinse and then soak the glue tip in a jar of water (as it is rather difficult to get all the glue out of the fine tip). I used to use just the Elmer's bottle on bindings and it worked, but I like this fine line of glue much better for bindings.
I bought the metal tips from Sharon Schamber and had trouble with the metal tip screwing onto the glue bottle properly. Sometimes the glue would ooze out around the tip and make a huge mess. Then I bought plastic tips from her daughter's website: PurpleDaisiesLLC. These work much better, since it's the whole dispenser you screw onto the bottle (not just the tip). I do remove this when I'm done, soak it in a glass of water to get the glue out and recap the bottle with it's original dispenser and cap. So far I've only used this glue for matching a print when I have to seam two pieces together and for attaching bindings. It sure works slick.

I am in the midst of hand sewing the binding to what is to be the cats quilt, also my Elmer's washable school glue experimental quilt
My learning curve here is: I may have applied just a little too thick, I have areas that are a bugger to hand sew thru.
I think I am going to like this as an alternative to pin basting.
I used as QB members suggested 12" from batting and smooth globs with a plastic type card.
Maybe the tips would be a good thing for me.
FYI: Sam's Club sells Elmer's Washable school glue by the gallon $14-16.

I've used it straight from the bottle, squeeze with both hands, 12" from quilt and fast. Also thinned it a little (maybe by one fourth) and it squeezes out easier. Works the same. Seems like you can't go wrong any way you do it.

Thanks! I just got back from Walmart. Got them in the crafts aisle near the Elmer's glue: "Plaid" brand pack with 6 white plastic tips for $5.97. I wasn't sure they would fit the small Elmer's container, but they surely do
