That says it best, no place to rest your eye.

it is a bit busy but could turn out terrific in spite of it. I'd go for it anyway. usually things work out. our eye is too critical.

i'd put a mariner's compass in the center, since you don't seem to mind doing them. they always make a big statement.

Stitchinwitch, has your niece seen the design or is this a surprise for her? Is she possibly helping you choose her favorites?
If she likes it the way it is in your first photo I would leave it. No, there is no place to rest the eye. Maybe that is the appeal to her. It is an awesome design. Each generation has different taste. Whatever you choose has my vote.

aw thank you Dorothy - she told me the colors. but not the design. She is an "old soul" and is just buying an older craftsman house. After I decide that I am satisfied with it, I will show her the pattern. She doesn't sew at all and is not too familiar with all there is out there. Thank you so much for your kind way.

I like the mariner's compass/sunshine and the blue stars in the ows maybe alternating (2 on the first couple or rows then, 1 in the 2nd and third row,etc...)hope you get the drift.
Keep the braiding for another quilt. That will be pretty also
