I also use the machine to do my bindings, I trim even the quilt sandwich then sew the binding to the back, then bring it to the front, I always use a decorative stitch on the front of the machine, so it looks great on both sides

Good info about leaving batting and backing a little larger.
I always sew binding by machine.
