I made a baby quilt at the request of a friend. He is a new grandpa. It was very simple. Mom wanted specific colors and nothing girlie. I did have to make a run to a quilt shop to get some of the fabric (80 miles round trip).

I embroidered the little girl's name, birthdate and a couple of lady bugs on it.

The entire quilt top had 40 pieces in it. I have made single blocks with nearly that many pieces!

Quilted it, bound it and delivered it to Grandpa with an estimate of the costs of what I had in it.

He paid me the cost of materials plus 3.5 times that for labor/design, etc...

I was shocked. He insists it is worth it to him.

My husband says, "Tell him you are glad he values your work so much. Thank him and accept graciously."

I am trying but I am accustomed to being UNDERvalued.

I think that it is wonderful that someone understands what a handmade quilt is worth. Good for him!

Thanks, ladies. I can't help but remember the time I made 18 show choir dresses, custom fitting them with out a pattern. I asked for $700 and in the end the choir director paid me $400.

Those had so much time and effort in them. It just seems odd to have something so simple valued so much more.

It is nice to hear that someone actually appreciated all the hard work and supplies that make a quilt possible. Just put that "extra" money away in your sewing kitty for the next time you're underpaid.

Be thankful that some understands and appreciates fine work. And custom work. As you've learned...many don't. Believe your husband and the gentleman for whom you did the work. They know.

I warned you it was simple. I am almost ashamed to post it.





I remember five years ago he paid a shop to do one for his grandson. It was a piece of cotton backed with a piece of fleece that had the name embroidered on it. No quilting. No binding. Just sewn together, turned and top stitched around the edge.

When he asked I went for simple because he needed it NOW but I wanted him to feel that I made an effort for her.
