I have made a covers for my TV tray. Problems that arise are burning the fabric, if the iron is to high, So it couldn't be just any Cotton fabric.
Currently on the TV tray is a towel that is sandwhich with remnant cotton on the bottom, and Cotton batting in the middle.
Tightly machine quilted.
This one has lasted me the longest. No scroches, no worry of scorches either. Towel can take a good bit of heat.
