I don't know if the color is "set"...but whatever dye was released in that wash is supposed to be "caught" by the color-catcher. I don't think that is to say that the item will never bleed again...

I have been using them even in my regular laundry when I have something red that hasn't been washed several times. I did have one bad experience with them when I washed some fabrics, a black bled onto another piece. I was able to cut around it however I lost a lot of the fabric due to spots. I sure wouldn't trust them the way they are advertised on t.v. I will continue using them.

the color catchers do not set colors, they simply attract the dye in the water keeping it from getting on other fabrics. if you have something that is bleeding it is best to take it out and re-wash it until it no longer bleeds.

I use them all the time, even for regular laundry.

I use them when washing fabric for the first time. I can put lights and darks together with no worries.
