Do whatever works for you. There's no right or wrong way, as long as you don't sew over the pins. I sewed garments for many years and I learned to pin with the pin heads to the right so it was easier to pin curves and sleeves. When I started making quilts, I found it easier to pin from the left because it was all straight sewing and I didn't have to worry about "easing" in on curves. Right or left .... is right (oops, I meant correct!). :-)

The only wrong way is the one that doesn't work

I was taught to pin from the right side. Now that I quilt, if I am using a 1/4 inch foot, I pin from the left because the flange gets in the way of the pin.

Like everything else, do what works for you. The quilt police were hung in 2013 and can't rear their ugly heads any longer. LOL

I pin with the head of the pin to the left so that my 1/4" foot does not go over the pin if I don't/forget to pull it out (I'm right handed).

I pin my seams left to right. I am a garment maker for the most part. And I usually, about 80 percent of the time sew over the pins, Yikes, yes I have broken needles but as far as I know it never hurt the machine. Guess I am just bad! I try to take the pins out as I go, but mostly just sew over them! I was told that hinged presser feet would sew over pins.

I pin like you too and I am also right handed. Just do what feels right for you.

Like a lot of folks, i use a 1/4 inch seam guide (stacked painters tape for me)....so my pins go in from left to right - otherwise they bump into the seam guide. Works for me....BUT if i'm working on something and not using the seam guide, i do sometimes pin from right to left. How's that for a "definite maybe"????

What difference does it make as long as you are getting the results you want?

Good Heavens! It must be too early in the AM. It took me two pages of reading before I realized you were talking about pinning during the piecing process and NOT pinning during the sandwiching process! I hope this is no indication of what my new year will be like By the way my glass head pins are to the right across the seam.
