Oh, Granny, I hope you are wrong!! Without Wal-mart, I have to drive 50 miles for fabric! Living in the middle of a corn field has some major disadvantages.

Our superwalmart doesn't have fabric, but the smaller store does. It is always cheaper than Joann's. One of my quilt teachers told us that it is fine to use Walmart fabric if you hold it up to the light and can't see the threads thru it. If it is tightly woven she said it was ok to use it. I use Walmart fabric all the time, but always hold it up to see if the weave is tight or not. I've never had any problem with it.

Try www.stitchandstash.com My LQS online they carry moda and nice fabric unfortunately they are moving away from me but the online store, is awesome and pricing I believe is 5.95 per yard which in the REAL store was 9.99 per yard. Spent much of my $$ there, as they were 2 doors done from where I work, DANGEROUS! Check them out nice people and will ship anywhere.

I have noticed fabrics from both Walmart and JoAnn are of poor quality.
If you are going to spend time to design, measure and cut fabric, best to shop at a Quilt Shop. Quality fabric is sold at these shops. You will pay a little bit more but it is worth it. Spending alot of your quality time making a quilt qualifies the best 100% cotton fabric from a quilt shop or shop online.

Wow Bizybess, Just went to the Whittle's website. I'm impressed with there prices! I've never bought fabric online but I just might have to give it a try!

Another great online store (imho) is fabric.com. they have tremendous pricesl, the fabrics are top quality, and orders ship within 48 hrs. NO shipping on orders over $35. Can't beat it. Lots of online sales and coupons, too. My only problem is that the more people I tell about this site, the less fabric there is for me to buy!

I use to buy from Walmart until they started to get some very poor fabric in, and I stopped. I buy a lot from Joann's, but I do check the quality very close. Most of my quilts I give away, so Joann's is ok for that lap quilt or baby blanket. I love their snuggle flannel. However, my lqs honors the Joann's couon for us. 40% off coupon...which, is super because this quilt shop only has their sale twice a year. I buy my fabric from lqs because of the quality. I agree with the other gals, if you want a quilt to last, and to keep for years and get lots of use out of it, then use the best quality fabric you can. AND...be sure if it is of bright colors, or colors that might run..use Retayne...it works.

I am a little bias becuase I work at LQS.....But I have to say that even before that I never mixed my fabrics....I had my wal-mart bin and my quilt shop bin...I don't usually buy from joanns or Hancocks because we dont have one. Now I am getting rid of wally fabric because I have become a fabric snob :wink: ....but whatever floats your boat..I don't judge anyone else!
We all have our points....
But I have to just say this..there is 1st, 2nd and 3rd run fabrics each progressively getting better than the other and all of our presses have moved over sees..Name brands still use high quality fabrics...Moda, alexander henry, michael miller, hoffmans...ect because they are third run fabrics.....

Your better fabrics are like better sheets for your bed, they have a higher thread count. Some textile mills may print the same design in as many as three different thread counts!

Which is why you may find the same print at your quilt shop as at Wal-mart but for a much cheaper price and a much lesser quality of fabric.

I say buy what you like and can afford.

A friend of mine spent over $300.00 for Thimbleberries fabric to make her DDI a king sized quilt for Christmas a few years back, only to go for a weekend visit that summer to see the quilt in the dog kennel under the black lab that just had a pups!

A quilt is a labor of love no matter what the price we pay per yard, guess we have to be more choosey on our recipients! I do know that DDI will not get as much as a table-runner from now on.
