Here in SW MN, the Worthington Walmart still has fabric, although the department was downsized during their remodel. There is some cheap $1/yd fabric, but some at $2.44/yd, and also some at $4/yd, which feels quite nice, and yes, is 100% cotton. I'm only 65 miles from Sioux Falls, SD, but i never go there to shop, so I don't know about their WM stores. We do have friends in Wisconsin, about 20 miles from Baraboo, and the Walmart in Baraboo did have a nice-sized fabric department the last time we visited. Otherwise, we do have a nice LQS, and another store which sells finer dressmakers fabric as well as some quilter's fabrics. All in all, I still miss JoAnn's, and the Kmart we had before Walmart came to town.

Wonderful - I'll check them out. I'd at least like the chance to see the stuff.

Three is our area closed their fabric dept. but there is one in a more affluent area that still has theirs open. I asked if there were going to close that dept. and they said they had no intention of closing it.

Sometimes it has to do with the store manager as well. If you want to keep yours open in your WalMart, tell all of your friends to either speak to or write to the store manager to tell him or her how important this department is to you and your guild.

It amazes me that Walmart is even closing the ones they have. I spoke to one of the sales ladies that moved from three different walmart stores around the DFW area. I asked her if the reason they were closing their new store fabric dept was because of low sales on fabric. She said NO, their sales had been great. She believed it was the manager, shortly after the close, they expanded electronics into the area. (more sales dollars per sq.ft.)

I have found a quilt store that sells brand name $9 a yard fabric for $4.99 the year around. She has deliveries every week from an out of state wholesaler, so when a bolt is gone, it is gone. But what a great price for the best.

There is a Fabric Dept. on Rt. 23 just north of Polaris in Columbus OH. It has reduced in size but still going. There is a Walmart closer to me but fabric left a couple years ago. Also, I looked at the link posted earlier in this chat and had bought two of the fabrics on that link from that Walmart for the same price posted. It seems to be a good grade of fabric. Somewhat better than some I have gotten at JoAnns. I really do hate to see all Walmart fabric departments go away.

All the Walmarts near me have stopped selling fabric, lace, colored thread (except black and white). I live in Va. We made ALOT of calls, and complained to the managers, wrote E-mails, and nothing worked. The only place to buy fabric now is Jo Anns, and Hancocks, and they are so much more per yard. I am really upset with Walmart, I make quilts, totes,
handbags, quilted christmas ornaments, pot holders, place mats, table runners, bears, rabbits, dolls, dolls clothes, and even some of my own clothes, and ALL of the fabric came from Walmart. I used to buy fabric every time I went to the store, but not any more, and am truely sad about it. :( Hope you fellow quilting friends never have them close out the fabric where you live. I did save some money, and went to a fabric show, :D and bought fabric in Feburary, but had to spend around ten dollars per yard, and the show only comes around this area once a year. Keep on quilt-n Good Luck every one!!

Was in our Walmart today, bought some fabric - spoke with the lady who was cutting it and she stated that as of 2010 our Walmart would be getting 'remodeled' and with that remodeling we would lose our fabric selections.

Another Walmart about 20 miles away will be getting remodeled in 2010 too and then that places the nearest LQS about 30 miles away. Will need to travel there and see what they have!

My sister-law lives in Winslow,Me. We were going up(we live in Texas) every summer and I'd go to Mardens and stock up on Their material. I've done a few scrappy quilts with that material. Msaster
