I wash in warm water with regular detergent....top loader machine....never any problem with the glue washing out....set the machine to wash for 15 minutes.....set to be largest load/water depth.

I have a HE washer and I don't have a problem getting washable school glue out, however, I do use detergent with warm water.

I really like the washable Elmer's to sandwich my quilts. I have seen many comments about how to apply the glue. I have found the best method for me is to dilute the glue about ten percent or so. This makes it easier to apply. Then I apply the glue in small dots in a grid pattern. I have never had a problem washing out the glue and I have not had problems with clumps of glue. I do think it is important to use it sparingly. I started using the glue with a bit of 'fear' but I have have had such great success that I have not looked back. I keep the bottle right next to my machine and use it for all sorts of matching and delicate stitching stuff. For the quick matching situations I dry it quickly with the iron. When I sandwich a quilt I let it air dry over night. It all comes out in the wash! My washer is a HE front loader and I wash the new item by itself and I use warm water and detergent.

quilterpurpledog: I have thought about diluting the glue, but never have. When you say you dilut the glue about 10 percent... to you mean like 1 part water and 10 parts glue?

So glad you used warm water! I personally do not wash any quilts in my HE washer (I truly dislike my HE - top loading washer) I take all my quilts to the laundry mat and wash them in the triple washers.

If your machine has a soak option, I would try letting it soak for up to an hour in cold water with no soap to let the glue have time to soften, then wash as before. Silly me, I would make a dot of glue, let it dry, then soak it in a shallow glass dish to see how long it takes to completely soften. Even school glue isn't instant dissolving, but does wash out

I let mine soak for a while before I ran the washer cycle. All the glue came out even though I had overused the glue in some spots.
