I agree that not only would it be a good idea to ask them about colors, but also the design of the quilt top itself so it will go with their decorating theme.

I agree with asking and maybe even enlisting his/her help in selecting the fabrics (pattern?) from a selection of your choosing. Saying that because he/she may know what colors/designs they like but might not know what works best with what in a quilt.
