Here's a photo of my yo-yo quilt. I tied the yo-yos to a sheet.

Just wanted to add, this is not something you will sleep under! It makes a very heavy quilt and is somewhat delicate.
I decorated a t-shirt one year. I stitched the yo-yos on in the shape of a tree. That shirt sagged so bad. Those little yo-yos were just too heavy. Perhaps if I'd made them smaller!

another idea is to make a yoyo basket. I found my pattern online. it is quite simple. you make a circle and then work them up for the sides. I haven't had time to make one for myself but they look very simple.

I'm so glad you posted this thread and Yvonne thank-you for the picture.
I started January 1st making Yo's for a quilt, I have now completed 7 thousand for a king sized quilt, just stitching in the evening while watching TV. They are color coordinated from the same fabric line, all pastels. I've made a plain cloth very light weight white quilt that I will be attaching them to starting this evening. I've marked the quilt with vertical lines and will attach each tacking at the 12~3~6 and 9 positions.
I was most concerned about making just a coverlet as when I've seen older Yo Yo coverlets they always seem to have breaks where they are tacked together. Since this is so large I wanted the stability of having it attached to something making it a quilt. It may take two men and a boy to make the bed when it's finished but I'm hoping it will be as pretty "in person" when completed as it is in my minds eye!
I'm thinking of posting a picture of the all the Yo Yo's online here before I start sewing them onto the quilt...

I have made a yo-yo bed runner and a quilt (alternating strips of yo-yos and colorful fabric. I have also done a santa doll. You could also glue/pin them to a wreath for your sewing room. Yep I still have a baggie full of them on the shelf.

My friends call me the "YO-YO Queen". I've made thousands of yos into a queen sized quilt (no backing used),
a vest, ornaments, napkin rings, Christmas tree wall hanging, dresser runner, pillows, candle mats and decorative additions to other items. They are great to make while traveling, waiting for appointments or watching TV. Sorry about your granddaughter, wishing her all the best.
Now go and make something wonderful with your yos.

I really think there need be no concern about that. The older ones were connected with cotton thread which deteriorates over time but with the new polyester threads I don't think this will happen. I used cotton wrapped poly quilting thread to connect my queen size coverlet and I have had no problems.
