buy the best sewing machine you can afford(at least $300-400) there's nothing worse than a crappy machine that causes no end of problems. I used to have a really awful machine that I struggled with for 1 1/2 years.
Then I finally got a decent machine and been happy ever
    since!

    I will start...
The best one I ever got was to use small binder clips to hold my binding while hand stitching it down. They work better for me because they don't catch the thread like pins will, and I am hopelessly uncoordinated. I use about 8-10 and remove them as I go. Before I remove the last one, I replace the others on the next stretch. I just clip the 'offies' to the quilt so I don't have to chase them, and I don't get stuck with pins. (Fold the silver 'legs' down over the quilt.)
i love that one... i wind up all scratched up every binding i sew on!

Yes, you have it right. The way you have done it the top &
bottom of the quilt would have different colored bindings.

You can see, this is easy for the hands but hard on the mind.
And hard to 'splain, but well worth the effort.
    You're right! It's a neat method - and I'll remember it now...I think it's cemented in :)

Thanks for sharing it...and walking me through it!

I wish I would have know I was going to quilt when I bought my sewing machine last May. I would have paid the extra for a quilting sewing machine or even more and a different machine. If I keep quilting which I am sure I will, I may just have to give my daughter in-law my sewing machine when she moves back East (my son is in the service...they are hoping to get re-stationed near by).

My other favorite tip is to sew a few stitches on a scrap of fabric prior to starting and stopping any seams. Some people have a name for it like whatchamacallit ... it helps to have smooth starts and stops and also eliminates having long threads all over your blocks.

Some people call it leaders and enders. I found a topic on the board where ladies use small scrap squares and sew them together for this. Then they make a scrappy quilt. Inventive.
