What color quilt should I make for a new baby?

I usually make bright quilts with animals or alphabet theme--got my master's in color therapy and the bright colors are what attrack little eyes. They never see the pastels we are so fond of. My niece requested a small blanket to use in the car seat and at daycare, made of minkie on one side and a satiny fabric on the other. She didn't know what sex, so I just made white. My great niece Adeline, who is nearly 2, still loves her "softie" whenever she is tired or sick or riding in the car seat. She also has a bright red and yellow alphabet quilt that is nearly worn out from being used at daycare for her nappy bed. She received a lot of store bought blankets for a shower, but still gravitates toward the ones I made. I think little ones know that the homemade ones are filled with love.

Since you live in a cold part of the country, a little quilt that's just right over the baby's car seat would be very useful, also. It doesn't need to be big unless you just want to make a bigger one.
I agree with the suggestions about using theme fabric from popular children's books that do not lean toward exclusively boy or girl. You can find prints that have leaves or swirls or geometrics or cute animals, and have as your main colors either one or more primaries or green, and nobody will say "What a cute little boy!" when it's a girl, or vice-verse. Pieced houses are a cute theme for any little one. I have been making baby quilts lately and find I gravitate toward quilts that have a lot of white or cream, which creates plenty of contrast, even if you like light colors. For example, check out this one: http://www.modabakeshop.com/2011/05/...ays-quilt.html Also, warm wishes quilt with a theme fabric and three repeated colors in the strip block looks great in all sorts of color combinations.

I do bright colors for babies. They get past the black and white atage in something like 6 weeks.
I am sending along pix 2 of my really fast, but joyful baby quilts. Whenever possible, I put the fabric to work, with minimal sewing but lots of bright color and strong shapes. Many of the standard old fashioned star patterns work well as oversized blocks.
The second was a quilt in an afternoon, cut sewn pinned, birthed and quilted.

What a fun question . . . just remember anything goes in colors for babies! I recently made a quilt in red, gold, and sage with a touch of bright blue. It was fantastic and oh, so colorful! I am presently making one that is coral, yellow, and green. Most of all, just have fun! I've included a picture of a quilt titled "Posies 'Round the Cabin" found in "Creative Log Cabin Quilting", copywrite 2004.

Where did she go to school? Everybody around here goes to the University of Georgia, so black, white and red are very popular. I would use an old pattern, maybe something with stars or a log cabin, and make it child size.

Please, please, please do not limit yourself to primary colors. Besides primary colors can be over stimulating for a baby. make the color interesting. Find a wonderful color you like and go from there. Babies no long are pink or blue or yellow or green. They are every color you can imagine. If you choose a color you like, it will make the quilt special because it will be for the baby but a reflection of.....you!
