It looks as if it has a great harp space - and it's very decorative, I would buy it at that price (I love the face plate too).

I don't think everything old has to work! Sometimes they clean up beautifully and that is enough.

If you have five of the right bobbins, you have one pain in the neck eliminated. :)

I would keep the old needles as a keepsake if they're in old packaging, but use new needles for sewing. You can buy regular 15x1 sharps in many sizes for $12-15 per hundred on eBay and they'll fit almost any domestic sewing machine and quilting situation.

I don't think you'll be sorry - these things are so fun to tinker around with. Cleaning the mechanical parts is easy as pie. Cleaning the exterior without damaging the decals is tricky, but if you can get it clean enough to sew with, that's good enough.

This kind of machine is a good one to practice on because you're really not going to damage it's value. If the appearance ever really bothers you, you could even strip it and paint it a jazzy candy-apple red or deep purple or something else crazy and it wouldn't "ruin" anything. But, really once you get it clean and get to sewing with it, I'm betting its appearance will become attractive to you.

For just $35.00, you will probably regret it if you pass on this one.
I agree - oldies can be goodies - pretty simple to fix and will give you many more hours of stitching.
I'd go for it.

What a beautiful machine. Isn't the face plate fabulous. They don't make them like that any more! You didn' give $.
If it was reasonable along with the cost of refurbishing, I would go for it!

I bought a treadle sewing machine about the same year. It has theSphinx design on it also. The presser foot tension and stitch regular were all seized and it needed a belt. I took it to my repair guy and it cost me $170 to unseize, clean and belt. I think it is well worth it. And it sews beautiful. I have fun playing with it.
