I just made one of these and pieced the back. I just FMQ a medium stipple.

I like the idea of different size squares.Make a large one then offset a medium one, make them in different areas on the quilt, in all different sizes, even over lapping a smaller one toward the center of a medium one. I think it will look great whatever you decide, but squares would follow your original intent of SID.

First off Love the fabrics Second off why not do a diagonal line design something that "cuts thru the squares rather then out line them? Would that work? I did a log cabin that way and love how it turned out.

may not be to your liking but one solution would be to tack the quilt, so if you needed to fudge alittle you could, or stippling.

Both sides are so beautiful and took a lot of work. Why not get a different backing for each and make 2 quilts instead of one?

I agree. A grid would look very nice on both sides. Or meander.

I did this once for a room divider wall hanging. It was also an oops, what was I thinking. To make it worse, some the the blocks were photos printed for the quilt. I ended up hand quilting it so that I could match up the front and back. Luckily it was only half a queen size, so it was not too bad.
