I use the markings on my mat to line up my fabric for cutting and use the markings on the ruler to measure and make the cuts- I (thought) that is how everyone did it...

Ditto. I only use a mat line for the fabric fold when cutting and the ruler for everything else. The lines on both my mats are almost invisible so it's really a moot point in my case. LOL

I use both, nothing wrong with lining up your fabric on the mat ruler lines before you cut the fabric. I have several slotted rulers and I use them all.. if you use the ruler on the mat first you keep from cutting the wrong sizes and wasting fabric that way because you tend to forget or not notice the size of the strips you are cutting.. believe me no one wants to waste fabric, and I have made many mistakes by not paying attention to the mat ruler first.. good luck.. follow your own way that makes you feel comfortable

I do it both ways. My Daughter uses the marks on her mat. The first books I bought said to not use the mat marks. They may not be the same as on a ruler. There is more than one way to do something.

I only use the marks on my mats for rough measurements. Like if I need to cut a half yard off of a large piece of yardage to use for a certain project. I don't feel like it's as accurate to use them since there isn't a ruler pressing on them to keep them still, if that makes sense.

On the same note, why does she say to press and not iron back and forth while she is actually ironing back and forth?

eta: I have not seen the videos the OP is talking about, but if she isn't adding a disclaimer that mats may not match rulers or that all mats may not be accurate, it could be a frustrating lesson for some people that don't know. Like beginners.

I use the lines. it's much more accurate than the old method b4 rotary cutters. and those came out fine, so the marking help me alot.

Try cutting with your cutter in your Left Hand and see what is easier for you to use. I am a lefty and use any grid line to line up my raw edge then the measured line on the ruler is lined up with it. Then move left with each cut.

Lines on my mat match the lines on my ruler, I use both. Do what you want as log as you get the results you want.

I use both and have no problems. Why were you taught not to use them ?
