I try not to use synthetics as much as possible. That's in all things; not just quilting. I prefer not to use petroleum- based products, but that's an environmental and human health concern rather than a quilting concern.

Poly just isnt forgiving and I need all the help I can get! Cotton can be forced to conform and obey!

Thanks for the answers! I guessed it might be most of the reasons stated and figured in the end it all really boiled down to personal preference and what works in your design.

And I'm 100% with whoever stated that cotton 'breathes' (and absorbs) better and is much more comfortable for summer clothing! Had on a tank top this weekend in an effort to stay cooler while working outside. Forgot it was cotton and spandex instead of just cotton. . . Won't forget again!

Same here- don't like the feel of polyester. I started sewing when it was very hard to get 100% cotton, (in the 60's) which I think feels better, especially in a quilt. DM and I were talking yesterday about how great it is not to have to iron everything now. Polyester definitely freed us up!

I'll use anything as long as I have enough of the same thing. I don't want to waste money and time on a fabric experiment - only to find that after the first wash some fabric did this and others did that.

So if I have enough poly, poly blend, silk, wool, homespun etc to make a whole quilt - I'll use it.

A 100 percent cotton black fabric will loose color faster than a blend, in side by side wash per wash testing. I have done my own testing with swatches from different companies ...different lines.. throwing the swatches into the same laundry loads every time ...... and yep a blend beats it( 100 percent cotton) hands down in the which black will stay black longer test.
Quilts were orginally made from what was on -hand.... I follow that lead ...
True. I made a quilt with black fabric ran out went to a different store bought more black fabric didn't check it was a blend and you can totally see a difference.

poly and blends do not breathe like cotton...also they tend to melt when ironed on a cotton setting...

The feel of it is nasty ( to me) and it stinks horribly when ironed at high temps and burns. It doesn't piece as nicely, it doesn't lay as nicely as cotton and I could go on and on....
