You've heard it before, but I'll say it again - asking a quilter to mend is like asking a chef to do the dishes ~ ~ ~

DH knows that he has to REALLY be nice to me if he really, truly needs something mended.

SOMEWHERE in my sewing room, at the bottom of SOMETHING, there are things that needed mending years ago. Every once in a while I come across them and put them in a Goodwill bag ~ ~ ~

Aunt Taz and Gail G - Happy Birthday to both of you. I guess even if I am a quilter now, I still fix and mend for friends and family. DGD (5) came to me not to long ago to fix her dress. Sadly I couldn't do it. It was one I had made her when she was 3. She had dug it out and wanted it again. She is still wearing the one I made for her last year though.

Just say,"No, but I'll be happy to show you how to do it if you like." and watch them run!

Ha! Same thing happened to me two weeks ago. I removed the pins and shipped it off.

My daughters always asks me to mend their stuff and the grands-i reallt don't mind. what i do mind id when my MIL and SIL ASSUME that i can do things like "can you cut down this purse-it's too big! or can you cut off this coat-it's too long. and the one that really torked me was when my SIL was geting married for the 3rd time and bought a beaded long dress at a local resale shop and didn't bother calling me to look at it or ask about it before she bought it. it was too big(2 sizes) and had me alter it. it took me 23hrs to remove beads, take it in, replace beads and have it ready for the wedding. not that i did it for money or anything, but i got a verbal thank you and one of the small table centerpieces from the reception. i didn't even get a flippin'picture from the wedding! just sorta bothers me-can you tell? :)

The article was fascinating.
So far I've only read chapter one.
I think the article deserves it's own thread.
It stimulated lots of thoughts in my mind.
My mom sewed my clothes when I was a kid.
I even asked her to make my wedding gown, which she did.
I, on the other hand, did not sew until I retired.
My sister was a home ec major, but seven years later, when I went to high school, home ec, was not even an option. There was academic, secretarial, or general.

I also have been asked to mend, repair, shorten and sometimes I did it but always resented it because it was always a last minute thing. " Can you hem this, I need it yesterday " Now I say I am not a seamstress and would probably make a mess of it. My DH is right when he says people can't take advantage of us unless we let them. He is right.
