I go both ways. I do enjoy using my scraps but lately I've been working on controlled/planned wallhangings.

I started out "planning" my quilts, but over the years, I have learned to do scrappy. I tend to do a controlled scrappy, and ma having fun!

I am more of a planner because I like to get certain colors or prints into a quilt. Although my first quilt was scrappy, using leftover fabric from clothing that I had made. I guess that's what got me started into quilting.

Both, I save all the scraps from the pre planned projects and make scrap quilts. Sometimes the scrappy ones can be even more of a challenge.

I've done both, but prefer scrappy. I've done both the random scrappy and controlled scrappy. I say control because I will pick 3 or 4 colors and use scraps of those colors. I think it comes down to your viewpoint of quilting. Some look at it as an art form and they plan. I look at quilts as utilitarian. My family quilts were all scrap quilts, pieced with whatever was available. In the 1800's and early 1900's the planned quilts were done by wealthy people who could buy fabric. The mother living in the one room cabin on the prairies of SD, who needed a blanket to keep her children warm in winter didn't plan anything, just used what she had and most of the time it was used fabric.

I've gone from matchy, matchy to mostly scrappy.I buy mostly fabric on sale, whatever color/pattern I like that day & it's hard to follow a pattern without matching fabric.

I am a scrapper. I don't have the ability to pre-plan and then stick with the plan. The fabric takes over. I feel too constrained by patterns and plans.
