Amazing block Kass. AS someone who loves math, I love seeing what you come up with.
Darcy after I put the quilt together I realized I had those peas the wrong way. I decided to keep them that way. The Amish always make sure there is one mistake in their quilts. Something about only God being perfect. I decided that was my Amish mistake. The hundreds of other mistakes in the quilt were for the galloping horse method of quilting I use: It'll never be noticed on a galloping horse and that's the only kind I ride.

Since I spent so much time designing the last 3D block, I really wanted to use it w/ other fabrics. I learned something in my latest block. To get the best impact it needs contrast in value as well as color (I thought color value contrast would be enough). I made a block w/ that pattern for Vikki, the 3D elements aren't as prominent, but instead of concentrating on that I am choosing to think this block is looking at a moonrise w/ twilight sky through a slatted window.

Kass, two amazing blocks. I love the image of the moon rising in the second one. It always amazes me how the same block can look entirely different with different fabrics. Such a fun lesson in color and creativity.
MJP, Your summer quilt is great. I have my summer blocks sitting in my "someday" pile. I hope to start doing some quilting myself (rather than pay for LAQ) so that might be one of my first attempts. I am sure I will also make the Amish proud. Can't you just vision some Amish grandmother coming up with that story to cover up her mistakes? I always tell my students that I make mistakes in my notes on purpose to make them have to think and question. They buy it for the first week or so.....
It is snowy and 6 degrees here in Wyoming today. We have actually had a pretty mild winter so I guess it is our turn. With it being a holiday, it is a perfect day to sew. I have a wedding present quilt I'm in the middle of, but I hope to push it aside for a bit and work on some blocks.
My youngest son (24) has gotten in the habit of giving quilts I make to his friends when they get married. I think it is really special that he appreciates the quilts so much, but dang he is at the age where he knows a lot of people getting married. I told him that between the time and cost, I might have to sit a couple out.... so for his birthday, all he wanted was for me to make his friend a quilt. He knows the way to his mother's heart!
Happy President's Day everyone!

Wow! Your moonrise is equally as gorgeous as your 1st block!
Sometimes subtle (low impact) has it's place vs a high contrast color/value. I'm going to pay closer attention to the options as I select the companion block fabrics. Some of the fabric combinations sent strongly suggest a preference of one vs the other.
I'm enjoying the whole learning process here - thank you all!

I find high contrast, bold, dramatic type color combos easy. I struggle w/ the low volume type combos. Before my first boom I had NEVER done any low volume work, these ladies have caused me to stretch those particular muscles, it is still pretty hit and miss for me. I have made some so low volume they are mute!!!! lol lol lol

I agree 100% with Kass, high contrast is easy for me. Low contrast is way out of my comfort zone and the colors ladies ask to go with their fabric has been another real learning curve. Sometimes I see the color requests and I think what in the world are they they thinking. Even after completely the block I haven’t been sold. Then I see their blocks together and go Wow they had the vision to see that combination.
Kass your second block in low contrast is just as intriguing as the high contrast.

I'm inclined to the bold, dramatic high contrast combo too - I like the 'wow factor' but also wonder if it's easier to envision the final result when you're planning the process? I'm not confident (or accurate) in seeing the results when playing with the lower volume/contrast. However, I must say I've seen exceptional quilts made this way.
Love the idea of playing with all types of fabric here
