I was extremely proud of myself for finishing Allietare before starting Provence (it was the day before, but whose counting right??? lol)

Ok ladies don't die of shock but I have never sewn boom blocks into a quilt before today. I decided not to add lattice because I only wanted the two colors. Will add a third color for narrow border. Off to find enough red for outer border and this baby will be ready for quilting. These blocks are assembled as they came out of their baggies. I have three lefr and didn't have enough of the wave fabric left to make 2 more blocks for another row. Haven't decided if they will go into a great table runner or go on back of quilt

I haven't either. And I'm sure we aren't the only ones. My next quilt, if the one I'm working on now turns out well, will be a boom quilt. Finally. Congrats, Terriamn! It certainly is a bold top!

Wow, that is some bright chaos, good for you for embrassing the chaos. I think I would have to call it "Torsades" if it were mine. It is a rare but fatal heart rhythm that your blue fabric reminds me of. https://www.google.com/search?q=tors...8ioLY76q3qHZM:

I actually have so many plans in the works that I feel paralyzed in my quilting... what to work on first? I have craft shows coming up on Saturday and the following Saturday, and not enough small things made to sell. I have all the ideas for the quilts I want to make for the fabric and patterns I bought while in Paducah. I have all the recent UFOs to finish, plus a couple of BOM and BOWs to start on. And always, the pull of the charity quilting to keep up with. That's the most important thing I do. And on top of all of it I have a commissioned T Shirt to finish by early May! I think I will have to 'call it good' with the craft show inventory... not expecting a lot out of those, anyway. And the new stuff I DARE not start, with so much else in the works, unfinished. I think I'll have to finish up a few things so I can get to that T shirt quilt. It's a graduation present for the lady's daughter. You all have helped me along with my charity quilting, because all I have to do is assemble and sew my April Boom blocks and I'll have two to donate, right there. Can't wait to have those to show you.... There, I've talked myself into a plan. |
Wow Terri! The quilt is outstanding.... And a big round of clapping hands, for you sewing together a Boom top, your first! Have fun quilting that puppy on your new quilter.
You should call that one "Shock Waves"... :) Janice, can't wait to see what you do with the QAYG method. I find it an easy and fun way to get one put together fast. It's so much more fun to quilt 12" blocks individually, for me. |
The red border fabric is in the wash. Hope to totally finish by Friday. Great names ladies I love them both, any more ideas. Think this fabric was so out there it didn't need a lot of thought and planning to put it together. Let's face it nothing was going to calm it down. When it's finished it will go in the drawer until someone says I love it and it will be there's immediately.
|
Terri, you mean to tell me ALL the swaps we have been in together you have never finished a quilt with them?? I have sewn mine into some kind of quilt from Boom 5 till this one. Id have a panic attack if I had all those blocks laying around! LOL... I love the boldness of it and I bet a teenager would love it too!!
|
Nope Joan, have never sewn any of them together b4. I get them out and can't decide what to do with them. Need to divide to just get it done b4 I start losing the blocks.

I received my package. Everything is terrific! Thanks to all!!

Congrats Terri! Your quilt does remind me of a heart rhythm too. It's bright & vibrant! So fun to see a boom quilt put together.
Sewbiz I love your entry about being stuck & paralyzed. I'm afraid I have too many projects myself & I'm thinking I need to start finishing a few of my projects before I do a few more swaps. |

Terriamn, congratulations on taking that first step to get this quilt done. That blue fabric was so fun to work with. You Boomers came up with gorgeous blocks to show it off. How about "Heartbeats around the world" as a name?
Sewbizgirl, I'm waiting on that cloning tute, too. Get your projects done, BOOMers, so you can participate in the next BOOM without UFO guilt. |

Sounds like a lot of us are overwhelmed. There's just SO MUCH fun quilting out there that we tend to bury ourselves in it-- I do, anyway. Maybe it's a good thing we will have a two month break before another BOOM sign up, so we can all get unparalyzed. :D
Terri, now that you have that nifty sit-down quilter I'll bet you get all those booms finished up and quilted. By the time you finish you'll be a pro on that machine. |
I'm totally amazed! Have you made other things from the blocks like runners or placemats or are they all in a drawer? Not sure what I'm going to do yet for the turquoise and green.....I need 13 more blocks to put my quilt together so I either make them or wait until the next boom and send out more of the same fabric. Not sure yet but I don't know if I will be able to wait, have a hard time leaving something undone. Just a quirk or some OCD

I just got done quilting 6 blocks... half of the first throw quilt. So. Much. Fun. I usually use my 80/20 cotton-ish batting for QAYG, but I have so much poly batting that I bought for charity quilting... so I thought, 'why not try it'? It makes such a lightweight, fluffy quilt. So far, so good. The first six blocks look awesome! Your blocks have come alive!
I had 25 blocks and needed only 12 apiece for two lap quilts, so I'm putting one of my bonus blocks on the back. It looks great with the backing fabric. Can't wait to get this together and show you... at least one of the throws, for now. I always have to refer to the tute for strip width... never can remember! |
I'm Using the QAYG method for the first time. I've only joined the first row of three blocks but other than it being the tiniest bit fidgety, I'm already loving it. It might be a little harder to work with the longer lengths of rows, but I'm already thinking this method is a winner. :). Hope to get the time to join two rows later today.

Progress pics... here are the first 6 blocks quilted with my puffy batting.
Seasaw's pattern- The dark pink strip at the top of some of the photos will be the front's sashing. |
If anyone would like Seasaw's paper pieced heart pattern, pm me your email address and I will send it. I know she would be happy if we shared it. She was kind enough to draw it out for me when she was feeling better, in the last boom we did. <3:o<3

Jaba, they are all sitting patiently in plastic container. When I go by them they scream pick me, pick me. I am on a real roll but don't have much time till I will be staying at lake. I only bring my small sewing machine out there. Great for piecing blocks but not for big projects. Next is granddaughters quilt which isn't from a boom.
|
Sewbiz your blocks look great. Definitely going to try this on one of my next quilts.
|
I'd love it actually. Thank you. .

Well, here's my first of the two lap quilts... Strawberry Lemonaid! Your blocks are amazing. One of Terri's blocks gets to have the whole back to itself! If you don't see your block here, it will be in the next lap quilt. I have 12 blocks left to make one more.
I LOVE this quilt! It's going to be very, very hard to give away. KASS, those octagon blocks of yours would make amazing quilted pillows! |
Great job w/ the quilt. Pillow would be the way to go b/c it is definately a special occasion block, not one a person would want to repeat 20 times! lol
|
I have quilted four sets of boom blocks into two quilts, have one other flimsy made from two groups of blocks waiting for a trip to the LA, and just over the weekend put my space blocks for my nephew that are from the last boom together in a flimsy. I just need to find a cool border fabric for it. I think boom 15 blocks are the only other ones I haven't touched. i am currently working on a bookshelf quilt, so boom blocks will have to wait.
Speaking of a bookshelf quilt, I am thinking of QAYGing it in strips and having the shelf be the sashing. Any reason why that won't work? Any suggestions? I want to quilt around the books and I don't think I can do that on a LA. And, Libster, I took your advice and took the teal ruffles off the crib skirt for my niece, replaced it with a blue box pleat, used the same blue with the purple in the baby quilt to tie it all together and she loved it. Y'all are so awesome! |

I have several times done QAYG in rows. Allieterre I did in diagonal rows w/ no border and Provence I am doing w/ a wider pieced sashing. Both have/are working well

Strawberry Lemonaid looks great and perfect name.
MM your bookshelf idea sounds intriguing can't wait to see it. How do you add borders to QAUG, |
Hi Terri, I would think to add borders just treat them as a strip that you quilt first and then attach with the same size sashing as the quilt... or not. You could just sew the pieces on, right sides together, and then cover with a sashing strip on the back only. There's always a way, even if you have to 'feel your way' through it the first time. QAYG is just building a quilt in units. There are so many different ways to get there.
|
...wonder how Libster is? Wasn't she going to have some additional surgery? Anyone heard from her?
|
I have a question and it might not be a correct answer to it yet..On the QAYG quilts do you think they will hold up with a lot of use and washing? I know the blocks are quilted and then the sashings are quilted to the blocks but I wonder if they are as sturdy as a full size backing on a quilt? Ive made one and I LOVED it but with so many seams holding it together in rows I was just curious if anyone had investigated the quilt after lots of use? I loved quilting each block separate then sewing them together!

You could ask Kass... I think she's been doing her quilts for kids this way for a while. Maybe they have had time to wash them and put some wear on them? eta: I machine stitch my QAYG sashings down on the front, rather than hand stitch them down on the back, so mine are going to be very strong, being sewn through all layers. |
I've had QAYG quilts for over 15 years (maybe even close to 20 years by now) and have never had any damage or wear to the point of seperation to any of the QAYG seams. I have always machine sewn the sections never hand sewn.
|
I've never done this method before but you ladies are making me very curious and wanting to try it. I went to the tutorial sewbizgirl so soon 1 of my quilts will be this method. Lots of times I have wanted to quilt each block separately but on the longarm it's just so easy and "lazy" to keep going with the same over all pattern. There has to be a first time for everything right??
