For those of you who make a lot of pincushions have you ever
used any of the emery sand (that keeps the pins and needles sharp) in your pincushions? I am wanting to try using the sand to and see how easy it is to "fill" the cushions with and how I like working with it. Plus I want to see if it will add some "weight" to keep them in an upright position. Just curious of what you think about it if you have tried it. I will be purchasing it from joggle.com when I do get the money to buy it. Also on the subject of pin cushions do you look at/for small things that you can use as bases for pincushions? I was browsing at a thrift store one and found some cute little "cups" that I thought would be cute to use. I have 5 of them and they are about 1-1/2" high by 1-1/2" diam. Mary,
I started getting a fondness for pincushions when I started getting them in my SP boxes. They are all just to cute to use, not to mention that I seldom (if ever) use actual pincushions. I LOVE the handmade so that I can display them and look at them all the time. Of course my two younger (fur) kids likes them too, so if I don't hang them up HIGH where they can't get to them then I have to go hunt for MY pincushions. Thankfully though I ALWAYS make sure the are NO pins in them, as I don't want them to get hurt from the pins (main reason I don't use them). I found the emery sand on the joggles.com for $5.95 per POUND, when I do get some I am thinking about using buckwheat hulls (I have a 5# bag) in the bottom of the cushions (that don't have a "weighted" base) and the sand in the top. Just an idea though since I have not yet tried it don't know how/if it will work. |

Louise~I collect pincushions and have had people make me some out of the neatest different types of "small items"....Some are made to look like certain things...example-Lawsonmugs (Mary) made me one that looks like a sewing machine; Ladybug (Rosemary) made me one that looks like a flower with lots of petals and Moedeenie made me a chicken...but then I have some that are made out of other things....one in a dainty tea cup and cup is glued down to the matching saucer, one in a little mini basket with cushion coming out of the top..one on top of a spool of thread...these are just some of the ones I have...there are so many cute ones that can be made from other things...the little cups on your picture will be adorable for them.

I found those little cups as goodwill of all places. They have a
"rough" sandy texture to them.
