i agree with everyone else, it is doable. I do not sort my fabric by color. I sort by size. I measured each piece and put in stacks. I prefer sorting this way because I hate it when I find a piece I really want to use in a quilt and it is not large enough. At least with it sorted by size I am not wasting my time looking. Good luck.

ITA with the others ... it's do-able .... just take it one little bit at a time.
However .... perhaps Grandma is quite content with it this way, and your desire for organization is not her desire?

I've spent the better part of three days in my sewing room organizing. I don't even want to think about how long this room will take you to do. No advice. Just start. And may you and your Gram still speak to each other when it's done.

I certainly agree with taking scheduled breaks. Decide how you are going to sort, work for a couple of hours and then sit down in another room and have a treat. Then you won't get so tired in the long run. You might even want to set a time for each day's work...4 hours once a week or whatever is good for you. It will work you will finish sooner than you think.

Hmmm. I would get one empty bin (more if needed) and clean a table into it. I would then pull out all the fabric that is not cotton, fold it and put it in separate bins. I would save the comic boards for the cotton fabrics and ruler fold the non-cotton fabrics. Do it slowly -- a little at a time -- or you will burn out.

What a treasure trove. I'm an organization freak when it comes to my quilting fabric. I just finished organizing my fabric shelves again, because we all know we pull and stick back in any spot that has a space when we're in the throes of choosing fabric for a new project. Like suggested above, I'd first separate in kinds of fabric, cottons, polyesters, wool, knits, etc. Then deal with one type at a time. Sort each kind into color and/or size, and scraps, then fold and tuck away in its bin. One important thing I don't remember being said is that each bin needs an easily read Label.

I agree .Be safe -- do not go in with out letting some one know where you are. Avalanches can and do happen
