I believe I have found using 10" squares on this method will give 6.5" HST, 8" squares to start with will give (I think) 5" HST. (If this isn't right, someone please correct! I'm at work and don't have that notepad with me!)

Thanks in advance..
I can't find my notes, but think I started with 6" or 6-1/2" squares, drew a line diagonally and sewed 1/4" on either side, then cut down the middle. I had a couple that came out a little small, so I trimmed them down to 5-1/4" and they ended up 4-3/4" finished. Odd size I know, but I didn't want to cut them too small because I wasn't planning a border on this one. Try one w/scraps or paper and see how it works for you. I believe the basic formula is to add 7/8" I'm not a fan of cutting such measurements. I'd rather trim off a small amount and end up with a 1/4,1/2 or whole inch amount.

I've never done one of these, so thanks for doing the comparison. When I do make one, I hope I remember your results. Both quilts are great!
