I think it was so kind of you to make this quilt for your friend. It is so hard sometimes to know if people really appreciate your work.

I made a memory quilt for my boss of 25 years for his retirement a few years back. Had 25 photos of people who had worked for him over the years. He was stunned I think. We hung it for his party and he just stared at it. His wife sent me a thank you note. Sometime later, she sent me another thank you note and told me a lady that saw the quilt told her, do you know how much work this lady went to to make this quilt? I designed it, did some trupunto and machine quilted it all on my regular machine. It is nice to know that some people really appreciate your work.

What a thoughful gift for a friend. You made this gift out of love, no mater the outcome! That's a true friend indeed. As she had time to look at it and feel it etc. and realize what a lovely personal gift, she felt the love and all the work you have placed into making this gift just for her. You knew what she liked to collect and that was a thoughtful gift.

Great story. I think it might take a bit of time for someone to realize just how much work/time/thought goes into a quilt. So--it hit her later. Sweet.

Sometimes I think people are overwhelmed by the surprise and are confused by their own response. It takes them a while to find their words. I've felt this way at times (like when my first child was born). I was instantly in love, but I remember thinking to myself that I was uncharacteristically quiet. "Stunned," I think, might be a good word for it.

High praise, and I had a similar experience, but not a quilting one.

I knit as well, and two summers back I attempted to make a teddy bear fashioned after the one seen in the Mr. Bean British TV comedy. It was too large, so I made another scaled down. I posted them on Facebook and an old and dear friend saw them and made funny comments about them, something about how the vacant stares look like we did in our younger and sillier days.

This year, she commented again about the vacant stare from the bears' eyes, so I shipped the large one to her so it could stare at her in person. She waited until Christmas to open it. She apparently loves it, because she now uses it as her Facebook profile picture.

All in good fun, we've been laughing together for nearly forty years even though we are thousands of miles apart.

Teddy
