I have been wanting to try the OBW. I think they are awesome and magical . I will definitely be watching this closely. Maybe I will build up enough confidence to actually do one. :thumbup:

Thanks K3n. That's what I will try - an all over pattern on the center, probably just wavy lines and swirls or such in the borders. I'm struggling with FMQ but even with a few bobbles, it doesn't look too bad. Like I wanted it that way!

Hey those bobbles are a design decision! 8-) And don't let anyone tell you otherwise. :lol: Actually in my early days of FMQ I practised meandering on these - the first full quilt I did on the machine was an OBW. They're great because they're so busy, they don't show the bobbles, errrr, 'DESIGN DECISIONS! :lol:

I am liking this better now that I have my borders on it. I added the borders because it will go on our Murphy bed that my husband is making.I am a bit worried about quilting it though...never done FMQ except a sample I tired once...not pretty. Now to get the batting and continue on... :cry: :?

Looking back at some of the messages posted here, I see that Katrine and k3n have used SITD on the cubes in their quilts. My question is "Have you used any other method on the cubes?" I have the Cubed book, but it doesn't show any quilting. I'm thinking what to do with my quilt. Here's the link to mine. It's near the bottom.

The actual quilting is what always stumps me. I look at all those beautiful quilts posted here and wonder how on earth they ever come up with such perfect designs. Could always fall back on meander for the hexes, but not the cubes.

Elaine that turned out beautiful! I actually learned to FMQ on my first OBW as I didn't know how else to quilt it!

Re the cubes, yes I always SITD to emphasise the 3D effect but I have also seen quilts where the FMQ just continues over them. The SITD IS a pain, especially hand sewing in all the ends, but I always do it because it really makes them pop. :-D

I prefer just to SID with cubes too, so that they are prominent from the hexes - and even the big interlocking ones I've done (Ice Follies and Chain ReAction) I did SID.

I am not keen on the ones illustrated in the books which are quilted over as part of the overall quilting, I think they lose alot of the 3D effect.

I normally quilt the obws from the back too as it is far easier to see where you've been and are going - so once the cubes are SID, I can see them clearly and that way can avoid going over them.

Ok I started sewing some of my blocks together today and I see they are going to come together quickly,,,well as quickly as possible for a lady who works 45 hrs a week and long arm quilts for business on the side Ha Ha...hows everyone else doing?

wow yours is turning out beautiful, since I am using the same fabric I am hoping mine will be as beautiful! I am a long arm quilter so I will probaly meander or do swirls...not too much of a design so it wont take away from the block designs,,,
