I don't use a frame for hand quilting, I work on a 18" hoop on a stand (Jasmine). I do all the markings "as you go" - mostly starting in the middle of the quilt (on this one I started on the right edge in the middle of the big motiv) and working to the outer edges. Because I work in a hoop the markings rub off quite easily when using watercolor pencil, therefore this way is the best for me.
When I quilt the middle I often don't know how I will do the borders. The ideas for it develop during the process of quilting.

I made three quilts in that longish size for the exhibition. For this one I used just half of a complete wholecloth design- just for fun!
