The bottom of the quilt is thumb tacked on. I guess you could use attach velcro and then stitch the backing onto canvas leaders. Of course this is older than velcro and Ma-ma just had thumb tacks or small nails. So, tack the backing fabric onto the 2x2 boards, roll the 2x2's to fit the batting and top.
Batting and top are also tacked down then everything is rolled until the 2x2's fit the frame. There are four slots in the top of the frame so you have a few options.
My husband can easily copy and make this. I asked him to make some to sell in my shop. I guess it's not a bad idea, afterall. The design is simple, but that's part of it's beauty.

When I was a little girl I watched my grandmother quilt on a frame like that. She did quilting for people. She and another friend would quilt on the quilts together. They would set it up in my grandmother's livingroom and set there and quilt together. I loved to go to my grandmother's. I guess that is why I love quilting. She also taught me to embroidery.

My husband made onefor me in 1990, and it worked almost as well as the new one I have.

I have one like that that my grandfather made Mamma when I was a small child (I'm 81) and I have used it. Sometimes she would hang it from the ceiling and then draw it up out of the way. Really neat.

I have one my DS gave as a gift. I don't hand quilt a lot, but it's great to have. My problem is space, they take up a lot. My GM had one on ropes that she pulled up to the ceiling when not in use. Can't remember just how it worked, but it did.
Maybe one day I'll use it ,--- just have to re-direct traffic. :-)
