This is a little bit of my completed scrappy twin top. Two winters ago, I turned many boxes of my scraps into the following:
Squares: 2.5", 3.5", 4", 5.5", 6"
segments just for this quilt, 2.5x5.5"
Another category was "long and skinny"
In the process, I got rid of a lot of truely useless stuff, reducing scraps significantly.
I also completed the top.
I always use scraps, both for applique and for scrappy foundation quilts and handbags.
I was given both the white and yellow floral and the peachy fabrics, which are not in my usual color range.

I did find a similar pattern dividing it into crossways rows - which I was not seeing before. So this makes alittle more sense in figuring out the pattern. Awaiting seeing the tute. I truly love this scrappy quilt and even more after seeing the one MotherDuck posted showing it on the bed. I have been working to recalculate the sizes needed since I have a bunch of 5" squares I would like to use for the biggest squares.

The actual size is not terribly important. If you already have 2.5" and 5" squares, your sashing strips are 2.2x5. Your (folded) star points are 1.75" squares. You could do 9", 4" and 4x9, in which case your star points would be 2.75 inches.
I am in favor of scrappy quilts, in part because they are so lively. mostly, I do unemboidered crazy quilts with scraps. For those, a foundation is important. One member of our guild has zero fabric budget. We supply her with our scraps and with 12.5" muslin foundation pieces. Her blocks go into lots of really nice comfort quilts.
BTW, the peachy stars would have been much nicer on point. I'll do it that way next time.
