jaba 10-03-2013 05:59 PM

Thanks for the update, everyone is so quiet.....kind of scarry:D

Dragonfly Nana 10-03-2013 06:01 PM

I know...eerie

jaba 10-03-2013 06:12 PM

Yup! And winter has hit here. Blowing and snowing and right now 30.2 degrees outside....brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Fireplace is going trying to save on that heat bill in this big house. Suppose to go to Billings, MT. tomorrow to the neurosurgeon and find out about my lower back surgery, sure hope the road aren't real slick. Don't want to cancel very bad, need to get it fixed sooner than later. Getting tired of these pain pills. Kids will be here next Thursday thru Sunday so after that. Have to plan ahead and get all the stuff I need for sewing upstairs. Doc tells me no stairs for at least a month, poor husband and Linda are going to go nuts hauling fabric, batting, etc......bet they won't want me to ever have surgery again. Happy sewing this weekend Paula

Dragonfly Nana 10-03-2013 07:36 PM

Wow winter huh - we were back in the 80s today. Though we were past it but I guess not.

I hope all goes well and that the docs can finally give you some relief from the pain. I am sure that Linda and your hubby won't really mind - as long as you feel better soon.

Elisabrat 10-04-2013 06:31 AM

I don't mind helping Jan at all. Offered to move in with her to take care of her, she vetoed that so she will just suffer visits from me hauling fabric is never a bad job and we all know that. also laundry and anything else I can help out at. I think she likes her dh's simple foods vs my Ca cuisine type meals. but I can be a pain and help with anything she needs it and she knows. might as well give in. AS TO MAKING THE BRAT HAPPY I gave up on everyone moving as fast as I like to so your all safe. phew I know right? I like to see forward movement or to hear from people too but no sneak peaks in a while. Quiet is an understatement. I wonder is anyone working on one now? I don't have another to play with yet. Lucky duck that I am I have one from another round robin ready to work with, just have to finish quilting my baby quilt. half done yesterday. and a couple other projects to keep me busy so I am ok for now lol... wish I had more energy. hours I have its the energy I need .. send redbulls. gross I hate those. wonder if they work or is it just the 32 tsps. of sugar in each one.. tiny bit sugary .. maybe we will skip the redbulls after all.

No doctor today, rescheduled to the 29th of October. Just raining in Billings but this pic is at my house. Roads are icy and very slick

Dragonfly Nana 10-04-2013 08:11 AM

Oh jaba, sorry to hear about the reschedule but it looks like not many people are going anywhere in your area for a bit - at least not safely.

Ms Brat - I promise to send you something soon.

Dragonfly Nana 10-04-2013 08:14 AM

Side not - I still work full time so I can only work on things for a few hours some nights and the weekends. I got "out of sync" when I spent the week with my mom and then had to go back up for 4 day the week before last.
She is now safely moved in with my brother and family in MS

Elisabrat 10-05-2013 04:28 AM

oh I hope that goes smoothly Paula. my mom did not take to moving in with anyone well. nor did she take the assisted living oh heck no. She did a six month stint with me. Sigh it was tough!

bigsister63 10-05-2013 05:17 AM

Great work so far ladies! What an interesting post!!!!!

Dragonfly Nana 10-05-2013 07:41 PM

Thanks Brat. The move went fine and she has been with them (brother and girlfriend) for just over a week now. They say all is going well - not too surprised because mom and brother are kind of like Bert and Ernie - they just click.

Elisabrat 10-06-2013 11:52 AM

how lucky for them. my kids say come live with us but.. they think we click more than I think we click lol I am just used to having no opinion when I know it will start a fight. sigh... sewing sewing sewing this is the good news!

Dragonfly Nana 10-06-2013 06:12 PM

LOL - I do the same around my mom, most of the time, but when I don't - well you know the result. :-) Very glad to still have her around - just couldn't live with her easily.

I got a lot done on Nexuss center today - in spite of all the distractions. Hope to have it finished by weeks end.

Elisabrat 10-07-2013 06:40 AM

oh grand! I can't wait to see what you have done!!! I have some sewing I have to finish today so I can handle all these centers coming my way!!!! three round robins I figure eventually they will all cross my doorway. its a theory lol..

Dragonfly Nana 10-07-2013 03:56 PM

I thought I was the only nut who was in 3 RRs at the same time.

Note: the 1st one is now finished.

bepositive 10-07-2013 04:46 PM

It looks like you're all having a lot of fun! :) They're all beautiful!!!

Elisabrat 10-08-2013 04:24 PM

its all your fault Paula. You got me hooked from the get go.. its tough work I think but its kinda rewarding and most assuredly for me a learning curve thing. I am really learning a lot of stuff, never ever used 'borders' like this.. strips all the time this opened my eyes to seeing them in quilts (never noticed them either) and to using them and how they change a quilt. so .. think its sort of addicting :)

Dragonfly Nana 10-08-2013 06:17 PM

Oh fine...blame me! I am passing the blame on to sewhappy30 who got me started on my first Round Robin.

I too have a learning curve-deciding what to do for each one because I never want to disappoint the maker.
You are right that they are addicting - just like the Doll Quilts - because they challenge you each time.

Elisabrat 10-10-2013 04:19 AM

love those doll quilts too this month we are making a golden glow of candle theme.. interesting idea to be sure. I am finishing one and agreed to do another with someone so I am pumping right now on get it done get it done! got two round robins I have to start on. one is easy its a farm theme? the other is another red/white but this time blue too! so busy busy beaver here. this weekend is another push to get them all done. oh yes agreed to another monthly quilt block. third one... those are fast. instant reward.

sue.ross.8782 10-10-2013 06:34 AM

So lovely. I gasped when I saw the picture. That doesn't happen often. I can't wait to see the end result.

Elisabrat 10-16-2013 06:14 AM

I am the queen of patience Dragonfly You just have to look at it sideways and you will see that I true! I love waiting. very good at it :)

I think these will all be beautiful. would love to see them move a bit faster but well the patient side of me gets it. you guys have lives! really? seriously?? who would have thought! and jobs even! and..me I have part time dialysis, part time napping and well full time sewing. just tapping my fingers... that's all .. (grin).

made cinnamon rolls with icing this morning so if your hungry come on over for coffee and breakfast!

Dragonfly Nana 10-16-2013 02:37 PM

I would Brat - if I lived just a bit closer to you. 2200 miles is a long way to go for cinnamon rolls :D no matter how good they and the company would be.

Nexxus831 10-16-2013 03:12 PM

Oh I am closer I will come over for coffee and cinnamon rolls. Yummmmmmmm

Elisabrat 10-16-2013 07:03 PM

wish you did, I didn't eat any but I am guessing they were good as the man had THREE with his coffee. :)

Here is Lana's center. I used regular old flying geese combined with the sherbet (?) color gradation fabric in orange and purple. I found a batik that wasn't exactly the same but pretty close and the dark frame parts are Ro Gregg's Marblehead in onyx (hands down my favorite fabric and go-to for dramatic "black but not black" colors).

I suckered the Midget into holding the center. The center is 48.5" right now and is just barely shorter than him. We've already grown 2 sizes since May... *sigh*

Elisabrat 10-20-2013 06:02 AM

I just love what you did. so your colors in that round Kelly is that a fabric that graduates in color from top to bottom? or is it a bunch of different fabrics from that line? I am so worried .. now what do I do to compete with that? ok not compete... compliment that? open to ideas here on what my round might be.. think its a 4.5" round?? seriously. help I need somebody! help not just anybody! helllllpppp meeee please..

Dragonfly Nana 10-20-2013 07:04 AM

I love what Kelly did - stained glass effect is so stunning.

Brat - I think the direction to go in your round would be to bring the beige tone from the center fabric back into the mix and make the darker fabrics continue to pop.

TheMamaHauser 10-20-2013 11:40 AM

Yes - the fabric goes from darker to lighter.

TheMamaHauser 10-20-2013 05:36 PM

Brat, if you cannot find a similar batik, I've got a good chunk of mine left over. I should have stuck it in the box to begin with but I forgot. Let me know and I can throw it in the mail.

Elisabrat 10-21-2013 06:05 AM

my local quilt store here she adores batiks :) literally more than half her store is stocked with batiks. I get bummed when I go in and cant find REGULAR fabric lol.. her selection of that stuff? sucks. lol.. so I am good thank you and save your postage. some of these round robins are sending a ridiculous amount of fabrics out with their blocks. why not send a couple and if there is more needed then send it. save everyone postage right? I am thinking an even mix of the darker and the lighter fabrics is what I want to do.. but truthfully this is one quilt that has to be in my hands I think. its turning out to be very striking :) besides.. I have an international harvester round robin to work on this week. my mind only focuses on one project at a time.. safely. :)

frenchfryqueen 10-25-2013 06:28 AM

I'm stalking you guys, and therefore am allowed to form and give opinions, right? Right. :) Lana's quilt is GORGEOUS. Should it get lost in the mail and make it's way over to Kentucky, well, these things sometimes just happen.

Brat, I think using the yellow/gold/in the center on your round would make the center really pop. I like the idea of doing some kind of wavy curves to provide some softness to the lines already on the quilt, or copying the diamond shapes in the original block.

Now I'll shut up and just go back to drooling. :)

TheMamaHauser 10-25-2013 04:06 PM

FFQ, you should join us for our next project.

Um... we ARE starting another project, right? I think we need to pic a new "theme" for the group... Like... "inside out" or "mama says..." or even we pick some awesome quote and interpret it in fabric. The "mama says" thing makes me think of Forrest Gump & "Mama says life is like a box of chocolates." I think THAT should be the theme of the next project.

Dragonfly Nana 10-25-2013 06:51 PM

What a cool theme "mama says."
But my mind went to "don't run with scissors" and "if everybody did..." or how about this one - "...your face is gonna freeze that way"
Now that would be funny!

Nexxus831 10-25-2013 07:36 PM

I Must of not been invited to this new event because I am not sure what you all are talking about

Elisabrat 10-26-2013 03:55 AM

me too Melissa think they are .. ignoring us .. because my mind works like that all the time.. and well its normal for me so its not going to be challenge to come up with something.. course my momma was always talking about wearing clean undies so that would not be the quilt I want to make lol.. she had a lot to say half of it never made sense in her German to English translations so given the morning I could come up with four or five. Ok Kelly I am in. Your the lucky winner of setting up teams next round and giving out a theme that we all can interpret into our centers and the rest will follow our personal themes when they work on them.. howabout a few of my favorite things. .. ok my mom said men are like pie, rhubard, cherry, apple your still eating pie. that is vat men are like. she also said they are all pigs and well I don't want a pig quilt.. maybe a pie quilt but not a pig quilt. .. lol if I looked at this pie fruit quilt I would laugh every single time I saw it.. my dh would wonder why the heck I wanted a pie quilt.. he doesn't know that story. oh dear no pick another theme please.. like 'the colors of my forest' some like spring, some like fall, some like winter, or those crazy ones like summer... or fly away with me.. and pick your theme destination either in colors or types of fabrics.. (southwest.. turquoise, rust etc..).. you know it could sound hard but be super easy like that.. so of course we will all sign up (your welcome I just signed you all up to save you time and energy).. ever thoughtful that is me :)

Dragonfly Nana 10-26-2013 04:52 PM

I think MamaH was just trying to get another one started with her comment not saying that one had been.
Brat - you are a hoot!
I was thinking about this "theme" idea some today too. I would love to do a "my favorite things" kind of quilt - maybe in a bookcase style. I could provide the "shelves" strips and the first shelf of items. Then others could make blocks of their favorite things to be put on the other shelves - kind of like a row robin - but the block maker would choose the size of their shelf and amount of items to be added to the shelf.

TheMamaHauser 10-26-2013 06:47 PM

OOoooooh I REALLY like that idea - the shelves and such.

I am thinking about doing the next RR maybe starting in January/Feb? I'm happy to organize it but I am still a bit booked for a few weeks. I've got to tell you, I spent ALL day (starting at 8:05 am and just finished at 8:40 pm) working on Michael's quilt for Christmas. I didn't take a picture yet because no one wanted to get up off the couch to hold it up for me. I've still got some borders to do but the major work is complete. That's the most time I've spent sewing since August. I miss days like this. Tomorrow I get to grade tests all day and get my stuff prepped for the week. True story: I want to be a stay-at-home-bum and just sew. I don't really want a job that requires me to get up or dressed or do anything that's actually productive outside my own circle of influence.

TheMamaHauser 10-26-2013 06:53 PM

Ok... so maybe "These are a few of my favorite things" rr. But you would HAVE to send a list with a minimum # of "favorite" things so people have some ideas what to include (or NOT include). And of course... have it open to interpretation, so like... I LOVE salted caramel. Kind of hard to build into a quilt BUT you could do a caramel-colored fabric. Or I love jewelry (not the case for me personally) so use jewel toned fabrics or diamond shapes... so you've got to find a way to interpret into a quilt-able thing.

Nexxus831 10-26-2013 10:28 PM

ok I get the point of picking the ideas but not really understand the "shelve" part. Does it basically mean you would put stuff onto a sashing strip? I am up to start one in January. I need to get my butt into my sewing room more often. Stop procrastinating and get to it. I would love to see some pictures of quilts even if they aren't part of this round robin. Thanks ladies.

Dragonfly Nana 10-27-2013 04:34 AM

Yes - the shelves would be a sashing strip sent by the owner. It would help to give the quilt a unified look. You can google Bookcase quilts but below are a few I found. MH's suggestion about using fabric to interpret "thing" might be a good way to make a few books.
