Great job! There's nothing wrong with guys sewing! It IS a machine, and you know, we just make do with what we have. It's not about how you get the job done, but that you're happy doing the job, and with the final result.

I did something similar with a table we'd bought at a garage sale. I got lucky with it's top already being a nice slick Formica surface, though, and it had two curved edges at the front, so I turned those curves to the wall and they're perfect for cords to drop through. I also found a set of drawers that fits perfectly on one side beneath the table at another garage sale for $2, and two book shelves for a few dollars each that hold all my fabrics. (I also buy MOST of my fabrics at garage and estate sales for pennies on the dollar and more often than not, I get top quality fabrics! ;) )

Thank you for sharing all your ideas. And the pictures are a huge help as I am very visual. It is wonderful to hear from the guys who quilt. And there are many more of us that can't afford the fancy set-ups than there are who can afford all the big spaces and equipment to quilt. Most of us just don't post pictures of our spaces as we don't think there is anything anyone else would be interested in seeing. Hoping to see more post and pictures from you in the future. Maybe I will even see one of your pieces in a local quilt show.

Well... My grma had one.. that my grandpa made. I am not sure what happened to it. I would LOVE to have one.. wish you were not so far away..,. like east coast.. :) i would have u make me one... Great job.. and great idea. And I do know what you are talking about. it would be so much easier to have everything level. I do not have fancie sewing machines.. but my long arm is nice :)

I know some were asking how you build the shelf on the bottom after you cut a hole in the door with a jig saw.

Take a 2 x 4 and screw that horizontal on both sides of door across from the hole.
Next take a strip of 3/4 plywood and screw that to the 2 x 4
Next take sheet of plywood (or similar substance) and screw it across on the bottom
Bingo !!!!! Your done, you now have a inset sewing machine !!!!!!!

This was the perfect depth for both of mine, yours might vary.

Thanks for the instructions! Sounds like something I could do. Does anyone remember when all sewing tables had this hole in them? Now I think of it as a luxury.
