I'm making this quilt for my sister for her 50th birthday this fall. She loves blue. I had originally planned hearts for the middle of each snowball, but now I think I like it better without. What do you all think?

Without the hearts. The hearts seem to take away from the blue. It's lovely.

Hmmmm, I like both, though I lean towards the all blue and white one. (I tend to lean towards two colored quilts, so I may be a bit biased.) Have you cut out a few blue hearts to see how those would look? Just a thought....

Without the hearts. With seems more juvenile, while without seems more adult. Both are pretty - just an observation.

Same thoughts here.

That's what I was going to say before I read Deb's comment-- more of a grown up look without the hearts. It would look beautiful with just some special quilted motif in contrast colored thread right in the centers of the snowballs. Here's a site with some free motifs for ideas:

Without, but you could use the heart theme in quilting the white snowballs.

Rose L 04-17-2011 12:30 PM

I like it best without the hearts and the open white spaces leave plenty of room for some fabulous quilting. Perhaps you could do some feathered heart quilting in the white blocks??

SueDor 04-17-2011 12:33 PM

The 1st one!

That was plan B, if I don't use the hearts then I'll try a special motif in the white space. Though then the decision is white thread or blue?

asmmauer 04-17-2011 12:35 PM

Best without hearts.

Blue thread for quilting the hearts in the snowballs. Very nice quilt, she will love it.

I really love hearts and put them everywhere I can, but on this one, I like the first layout.
There is something kind of neat on blue and white by themselves.

Well, definitely blue!

hobbykat1955 04-17-2011 12:51 PM

What if you and other family members wrote a special message on the blank white blocks...that would make it very special or put the same blue as hearts...one color of the blue not all the blues

TerryQuilter 04-17-2011 12:53 PM

Without the hearts.

KimS 04-17-2011 12:56 PM

My vote is without the hearts. It's a beautiful quilt and I'm sure your sister will love it! :-)

mltquilt 04-17-2011 01:14 PM

Without the hearts then you can use that space to show off quilting design.

without hearts...it's looking beautiful btw

cabbagepatchkid 04-17-2011 01:17 PM

I like the one without the hearts. It's beautiful and I'm sure your sister will love it

BTW: I keep meaning to ask you about the quilt in your avatar. It is stunning! If you don't mind sharing is there a name to the pattern that you used?

cinnya 04-17-2011 01:18 PM

The only thing that bothers me about the hearts are the colors.I think the dark fabric in your blocks would be nice and call me crazy what about white hearts? anything to brake up the big white space.
I am not a good enough quilter so I am intimidated to fill a big space with color contrasting thread.

TonnieLoree 04-17-2011 01:25 PM

Option 1, without the hearts. Use Rose L.s suggestion to put feathered hearts stitched in white in the snowballs. For the quilting on the rest of it, I would use blue thread. (The color that is sold for repairing denim pants; it's neither light nor dark and I think would blend with both shades of the blue). Beautiful quilt, and I am sure we are all demanding pictures of it when it is finished. (Lucky Sister!)

The quilt in my avatar has no name, I modeled it after a photo I saw. To get the effect, the colored areas are 6 x 9 finished with black strips on two sides that are 1 1/2 x 9 finished. You end up with a block that is 9x 9 finished with black on two sides. Then you alternate the layout horizontal and vertical to get the affect.

gal288 04-17-2011 01:53 PM

Without the hearts, but quilting the hearts instead. I think a pretty feather heart pattern would be beautiful.

lyndaloo 04-17-2011 02:20 PM

I like the first one, that is a lovely quilt, I think it's perfect!

wolfkitty 04-17-2011 02:25 PM

Without! I like the crispness of the plain blue & white. Some interesting quilting on the white, with white thread would be attractive. (Not hearts.)

Jo M 04-17-2011 02:26 PM

I think a pale blue thread would look good.
