when your title said "My ghastly quilt top! " I expected a holloween quilt or something really bad..... not so this will be very pretty I don't know what you are talking about. ghastly...
I love it...reminds me of a quilt my mom had way back when...really, really pretty!!! Oh and if anyone points out the imperfections, just tell them it's suppose to be that way...
I think a black and red border will really set this off, like 2 1/2 inch strips fo black, red, and black.
Did you forget to post the awful quilt???? Cuz this one definitely isn't it. Love your fabrics. You sure tackled quite a quilt for your first one. Great job!
I like your quilt, your fabric all work well together. Numerous ways & tools for Flying Geese - experiment and find what works for you, then enjoy the process. Matching points will get easier. Pressing direction is important. This is a great first quilt to be proud of.
I love your quilt....You did a great job! You picked wonderful fabrics & colors. Please finish and post again.
Over time you will improve greatly. My first quilt was not lined up, squares were off kilter... and it was Trip Around the World. That is blocks, not points like you have done. Points are very hard as your first quilt. You are courageous.
Not at all ghastly! Very nice!
OMG this is going to be gorgeous when you have it completed, step away and look at if from across the room. You are too close to it to see it shine.
Once you quilt it...the minor flaws won't show at all...the quilt is busy enough that they will blend right in, as they do now.
Well, using the guideline of how it looks from a galloping horse, when it's finished, it is going to be very pretty!!!
When you quilt it, nobody will notice anything that doesn't line up perzackly. It has a kind of vintage look to the fabrics. Definitely, a keeper!!! |
The quilting will make it beautiful, I don't think it is bad at all for your first quilt. The colors are nice together. You are probably tired of looking at it. I get tired of looking at mine because it takes so long to finish one, but if I put it away for a while and look at it again it looks better.
i like that it's a bit unconventional. it makes the "eye" more interested. and y' know what? any quilt that gets finished is a GOOD quilt! you're light years ahead of many of us, here. i say finish it off, dust off your hands, smile, and say"job well done"!
Don't be so hard on yoourself. This is a fine looking top.
Suggestion. I presume you are already pinning when you are sewing across seams. Someone mentioned this tip to me. When you pin, consider which way each seam allowance you are crossing goes. The one on the top should go towards the needle, the bottom, away. If you do the reverse, the crossed seams will tend to be pushed apart. With this, they will be held in place. Sometimes, in doing this, I find I have twisted the seam allowance. I then clip the allowance (once) so it will lie flat. A year or so ago, my guild was making a project together. Several quilters who are more experienced than I grumbled about this problem. after a quick hint, they all made perfect seams. |
I like it too. I like Deb Tuckers ruler for flying geese and try Ricky Tims one seam flying geese.Very simple and always easy to put together. I think you did a great job.
That is pretty.
I've seen pictured many quilts I personally thought were ugly, but this is not in that category at all--it's beautiful! It looks quite modern, and will undoubtedly be even more charming once quilted!
Make sure you have the correct presser foot. With my old kenmore machine, I simply had to use a 1/4" presser foot. However, with my new Viking, I need the 'piecing foot', not the 1/4" presser foot.
There's nothing wrong with your quilt. It may not be perfect, but what quilt is? Have you learned something? I'm sure you've learned a lot. You will continue to learn too, for many years. Did you enjoy making it? Cutting, sewing, piecing it? Good for you! Congratulations on completing your first quilt top. You're not done yet. You still have the pleasure of quilting and binding it. Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of quilting! |
I can't see anything wrong with it! I like it!!
A difficult pattern for a first quilt and you can be proud of yourself. It is lovely.
This is excellent. Hoping the ruler does make your life easier.
I like it!!!
It all goes back to "one man's trash is another's treasure....Do not short change yourself you are doing good.
Nothing wrong with that quilt. You worry too much. Finish it up, put it away for a while, and when you see it again it will look much better. Clarice
It's not as bad as you make it to be, I think it's rather nice. It will look nicer when you finally quilt it, and if you still don't like it, you can always donate it somewhere - the receipent will just love it!
You did a GREAT job! I never would have tried that pattern as my first quilt, But you must be a natural !! Even your points are great, something I still work on.
ITA with the others... why would you think it is ghastly!? Looks great to me! Can't wait to see it quilted.
A quilting friend of mine has the Flying Geese thingie you mentioned and loves it. I have done the one seam Flying Geese method and it is super easy, much faster than the traditional way, and very accurate. Fantastic job! I'm amazed it was your first quilt! |
It is beautiful, finish it and get me inspired, lol.....I have yet to get started on my quilt. I have been restoring old, guess I will have to get started on a quilt. Any who it is great, lol....finish it and post Pic's. :)
machines, lol.... |
Lov it, wait till you quilt it. It will change again. I just love the colors together and the quilt keeps your eye moving.
It isn't ghastly; it's charming. If it were perfect, it would look machine made. I like the imperfections. It says that someone took the time to do it. Finish it and be proud. In years to come, you can pull it out and admire how far you've progressed.
I love it. Good job. Some day I will learn to step outside the box too. Colors are great.
I like this---nothing ghastly about it in my opinion. Nice work!
You are being toooooo hard on yourself. Love the colors. Put it together and be proud of your work. You are your worst critic, but you shouldn't be. Great job!
Am not really sure why you are knocking yourself down on this quilt. It is wonderful and it doen't look like it would be your first one ever. You did a great job on the flying geese and there are many easy ways if you look up flying geese on google you will find some really easy ways to do them and they wouldn't take long and you wouln't have to spend the extra money on a fancy dancy ruler. JIMVHO. Please finish and show it off. :) Nice job!!!!:)
i love it , very nice
I like it! For some reason it gives me an antique feel! I think you did great for your first quilt!!!

I'm a fairly new quilter as well, and find that my projects never turn out as I envisioned them. I think I'm color challenged.
This quilt looks very nice to me, but I am wondering why the stars recede and the white triangles dominate. How would you choose and place colors if you wanted the stars to dominate and the triangle pattern to recede? |
Wow, this was your first? Absolutely stunning, has a very Zen-like, serene quality, a beauty to be treasured.
I really like it. So if you want to get rid of it, send it my way. If this is your first time with flying geese, then you have done very well. My first was not as nice. I love the coloration you have done with it. It shows off the stars and squares. Keep up the good work. You will get better as time goes on. None of us are total masters of the art. We all just like to have fun and you did good.
For a first quilt, that is quite an accomplishment. You need to pat yourself on the back. I took the easy road for my first one, a three rail. You just jumped into the deep end right off the bat and did a great job.
