My ghastly quilt top!

Lol, ok so here is the awful quilt I spoke of in my last post. Its my very first one ever and I still haven't quilted it. Oh and until I get the easy flying geese ruler from eBay, I am not doing flying geese again! Omg they took forever!

jillnjo 03-10-2012 09:45 AM

What do you mean????? That is great and I mean it!!! You have a great sense of color! Now, please finish it and show us!!!

kristen0112 03-10-2012 09:48 AM

I don't think it's that awful. Up close there are some issues but overall it's nice

feline fanatic 03-10-2012 10:06 AM

I don't think it is ghastly at all. I rather like it.

xxmbbxx 03-10-2012 10:09 AM

Thank you. Kristen, yeah I had trouble keeping the blocks lined up cause I didn't have the 1/4" foot but now I do so yay!

QuiltnNan 03-10-2012 10:14 AM

it looks really great!

Cris 03-10-2012 10:31 AM

Don't be too hard on yourself, I really like it, and the fabric is great!!!!

Sewfine 03-10-2012 10:53 AM

That is pretty. Would love to see the finished project.

barny 03-10-2012 10:55 AM

Whatever are you talking about? Get busy and work on that really, really pretty quilt. So an edge or two isn''t meeting, so don't look there. Don't point it out. I had an art teacher once that told me to remember "it's as good as I could do at the time". Take that attitude and get with it. ha. Barny

lynnegreen 03-10-2012 11:00 AM

Sometimes when I work on a quilt for a long time I start to dislike it, then ages later when I see it at a recipient's house or in my closet I think, that's not so bad. Your's has a very mod look from the colors, I like it a lot

Dandish 03-10-2012 11:01 AM

I agree!! It's simply GHASTLY. Send it to me...I know just what to do with it ;) (quilt it and throw it on my couch)!

I think it's pretty cool!

sylviasmom 03-10-2012 11:09 AM

It is a very pretty quilt, colorful and cheery. Think of it as your learning quilt because the day will come when you will cherish it. It is a keeper. Every quilter has one or a few. I know I do.

Teddybear Lady 03-10-2012 11:12 AM

Looks like you've put a lot of work into it. Don't stress over it. Just be proud of yourself and finish it. I think it looks very nice.

cindy4857 03-10-2012 11:22 AM

Your idea of ghastly is my idea of pretty cool. I truly like what you have done. I like the colors and the pattern. I would love to see it finished. i'm working on a quilt almost just like that but it has a 16 patch in the center instead of the 1/2 square triangles set on point. Mine is in blue. I hope you change your mind about the quilt and make it something to be treasured, if not by u by someone who will love it to pieces.l

xxmbbxx 03-10-2012 12:11 PM

Well you have all convinced me that it isnt so bad. I'm gunna quilt it up and then give it to my dad...he loves it lol

CanoePam 03-10-2012 12:16 PM

Quilt it up with warm and natural, wash it, and 95% of people looking at it will never notice a thing wrong. The 5% who will notice will probably say "Gee, I've done that myself!" LOL! I find quilts I make that don't match perfectly look much better after quilting.

I like it and I'm not a bit fond of gray in a quilt.

Prissnboot 03-10-2012 12:39 PM

Your quiltmanship is beautiful in this piece, and I bet you learned a lot while doing it, and these lessons are invaluable. Call this quilt an UBE - the Ugliest Blanket Ever, and it will become quite endearing to you regardless. For a first timer, your points are excellent!

Handcraftsbyjen 03-10-2012 12:53 PM

I don't see anything wrong with it. As for you wanting a flying geese ruler, don't buy it! Do the 'No Waste Flying Geese Method' I hated flying geese until I began using this method.

Aunt Janey 03-10-2012 01:03 PM

Really like the quilt. I'd be happy to have done such a good job. Finish it and you will find you really don't want to part with it

xxmbbxx 03-10-2012 01:06 PM

Is there a link to the post for this method? Thanks!

As I had mentioned before, one man's trash is another man's treasure. *I* thinbk your quilt if truly striking!

Maybe we could have an ugly quilt UFO trade here with members posting quilts they're willing to gift or trade for another. Perhaps we could even end with them being donated to a particular cause.

I like it. Looks great.

Its not the iffy blocks that I see when I look at it..its the awesome color and movement. I hope you finish it. And your an expert flying geese maker now. Don't give up! I am reading "Mastering Precision Piecing" by Sally Collins. She says.."If your disappointed in your end result after investing so much time, effort, and expense..then maybe you should go back and look at your construction process." Improving your fundamental technical tasks are the way to go. If you off 1/16th of an inch that will add up. If your seams aren't straight...that will certainly show up. Nobody said you have to sew at light speed..but I find myself putting the pedal to the metal so to speak to get done quick. I have slowed myself down and am watching my own fundamentals. I want to improve myself..I have quilts to make. =) You have a beauty there..I hope to see the finished quilt. =)

Very nice! You should be proud of yourself!

mucky 03-10-2012 01:56 PM

A nice red or black binding would really bring out the colors.

Tweety2911 03-10-2012 02:39 PM

It's a beautiful quilt and once quilted will be even prettier! You did a great on it. Don't give up on this beauty!

chislett 03-10-2012 02:48 PM

I really like your quilt...it is beautiful

PurpleBecca 03-10-2012 02:48 PM

There is nothing 'wrong' with your quilt, for a first one its great. The colours are fabulous and its a neat design. Now 'man up' and finish it!! A couple of borders, quilting, binding and 'Bob's yer Uncle' can't wait to see it all done!!!!!

AuntieD 03-10-2012 03:35 PM

That is a great quilt! I really like the color combination. You can always complete it and give it to a woman's shelter. I'm sure someone would love it.

cfmdesigns 03-10-2012 03:37 PM

NOT ghastly! Beautiful! Sophisticated! You have managed to get a cheerful effect without resorting to orange as I would have done. I salute you.

chaskaquilter 03-10-2012 03:54 PM

I think every quilt I have made has some wonky parts to it. But all my family and friends think I am a quilting master. I never tell them or show them where there are parts that are off. When I am complimented, I just say "Thank You".

SUZAG 03-10-2012 03:55 PM

What is ghastly about it?? Maybe just your feelings towards it after finishing it...lol I've got one that everybody says is great but I can't stand it because it gave me fits! I didn't even label it because I didn't want anybody to know who made it!

ruthie 03-10-2012 04:01 PM

OMG! if this is your idea of ghastly, I wonder what you think pretty is. This is very pretty, can't wait to see it quilted.

Wanabee Quiltin 03-10-2012 04:19 PM

You did a very good job on a quilt that would not be considered easy for a beginner. Please keep on quilting because you obviously have the gift.

rwquilts 03-10-2012 04:24 PM

I'm sorry you don't like it. It's pretty and being the first quilt, you did great! You didn't pick an easy pattern for a first attempt...next one you'll breeze through! Nice job!
