Road Runners Round Robin 2013/2014

Five of us here on the board... Elisabrat, Jaba, Twinriverfarm, SandyinZ4, and Tlambing have agreed to do a round robin. This thread will be where we post pictures of our progress for everyone to see. We should be done around May 2014 and we will post our finished quilts too.

I look forward to working with these great board members in our endeavor to create beautiful and FUN quilt tops with each other. I hope also to hear the chatter from the rest of the board on how they feel we are doing and to help us when we get stuck on a round and are unsure what to do. We are going to have an amazing swap and your all welcome to be part of this!

I believe Jaba has started on her center and will be posting a picture asap! Let the fun begin!

Diane007 08-14-2013 05:07 PM

sorry no picture

jaba 08-14-2013 05:35 PM

I sewed one yesterday that I really like and will probably use it! This was made from the urging of "the brat" because she thought this fabric would make an awesome quilt. It's not a fabric you can go out and just find, so will send some along that if you wish you will be able to incorporate in your round. I will take a pic tomorrow and post so you can all see what you will be working on. Excited here for this to begin.

tlambing 08-14-2013 08:40 PM

Can't wait to see your pic Jaba. I'm trying to get inspired/pointed in a direction that I really want to go. Nothing yet ;)
I've got lots of time this weekend to do some figuring.

To introduce myself...I'm 48, live in California, married w/2 grown kids. We've got 3 dogs and a cat that run our house. I'm a business owner for 12 yrs now in the dental field. My work is creative, but forcibly so. So, I quilt, for about 6 yrs now, to help satisfy my need to be creative on my own terms. I love bright and bold. Red is my favorite color. Learning to like the more contemporary. I strive for perfection (not that I succeed but I sure try hard)

This is my first round robin.

It's nice to meet you ladies, I'm sure we'll become fast friends <3

This sounds like its going to be bunches of fun, once I get over my hyperventilating.

gabeway 08-15-2013 04:49 AM

Sounds like fun.

mighty 08-15-2013 06:33 AM

Really sounds like fun!

No need to hyperventilate tlambing, take a deep breath, you quilt beautifully. I'm 67, married for 17 years so far. I have 2 grown sons and hubby has 2 sons and 1 daughter. We're a combined family and all the kids get along great which is a blessing. I am retired and loving it, owned grocery stores when I was working. Hubby retired once, then decided to go back to work but he will be 62 in Dec., so he's saying he will be done this time....we'll see, he always finds something to do, me, I just go and sew...
Here is the center I think I'm going to send. Want a nice soft "girly one" this time for some reason. I have plenty of the print fabric and will send a half yard or yard with it and when someone runs out and needs it just let me know and I will mail you more. It's such a soft print I think it will need some of it on at least some of the rounds.

This will be fun to watch! Everyone comes up with such great ideas.

SandyinZ4 08-15-2013 07:35 PM

Hi everyone, I signed up (Brat twisted my arm really arm LOL!) for this round robin on Sunday or Monday??? and then we left on Tuesday to visit friends in another state. Now back home and trying to decide what to do for my center block. Think I have it figured out and it is a toss up between two. Since we got home just this evening, still putting away 'stuff' but will post the one I decide on and then you all can tell me I made a wise or foolish choice! Let's see...I'm 68...married almost 45 years, have 4 kids and two step kids; 11 GKs and 5 GGk's (some were adopted); been quilting for about 10 years but moreso these past 4 years. Working on family genealogy and that takes up a lot of time so between that and quilting...I will never be bored. I think I am leaning toward a red and white quilt as red is my favorite color and this might be a way to cross one thing off my bucket list. (Tlambing, we have something in common already) :-) Ok..enough for introductions for tonight. Jaba, you are off and running with getting your block done already. Thanks for the pic.

Elisabrat 08-16-2013 03:50 AM

WOW you guys have me beat in the Grandkids department! I have one. She is 8! I am 51 in a long term relationship with a man who gets my warped sense of humor and raises me one. Hence the dead animal/bone collection he brings me. I have 3 grown children 2 who have made it there and one who is trying and not quiet there yet. I love them all to pieces. My dh has two who are pretty distant so we dont intermingle much. It works for them. I quilt because it takes me away from dwelling on life issue's which can be daunting but I can just sit here and focus.. on fabric, on design and it makes it all ok. I love this. I have Jaba as a sister/friend. We met here. She took me under her wing last summer when I had a stroke and quilting .. left my memory.. she is patient and so kind and well I moved to Wyoming so that must say something :) I love this board. Thanks for playing along with me. Even if I forget stuff a whole bunch be patient.. I get it. slowly.

Just posting two pics of what I am torn between. If I go with 12-16 one,(Thunder and Lightning), I can use two different shades of red and a white and if I go with 1-25 (Odd Fellows Chain), it looks a lot more detailed but would only use one red and one white. And just to make sure I have this correct...my center block needs to be 12.5 unfinished??? Correct?? I may make up both blocks and see which one I like better. I did say I am shooting for a red and white quilt, didn't I?

Elisabrat 08-17-2013 03:26 AM

Sandy anysize between 12.5 and 24.5 is fine. Each round will be 4.5 inchs or 6.5 inchs so it just has to be sized so one can put a block of either of those two sizes on their round if they want to do a bunch of blocks ie pinwheels or such. if we end up with an off size it makes it harder for the next person to do their round without a whole bunch of math. I do not do a whole bunch of math lol I get all flustered trying to readjust. Those look like beautiful blocks. Remember the larger the block you send the larger your quilt will end up so its up to you what your hoping for. and your block does not have to be square it can be 18.5 x 24.5 if you want it to be so use the basic sizes: 12.5, 18.5 or 24.5 for your starter and the rest will all work out fine. A red and white quilt.. and Jaba has a beautiful purple and white quilt.. what will the brat do.. might be a good time to pull out my turkey fabric on you all or perhaps my skunks.. no? well heck time to go see what I have on my shelves. some gorgeous aqua metallic Kauffman fabric might say make me make me!! up for some blues ladies?

Here's what I'm working with :) I went through all my fabs looking for just the right thing...and came across these Modas I've never had just the right use for. So,

(the white looks white in the pic but it's actually tea stained)

Don't hate them cause their beautiful:) Lots of color to choose from here.

I'll post my center tomorrow.

Elisabrat 08-18-2013 05:38 AM

OH YES! that would make a wonderful quilt to work with! Jaba Love yours well duh I fell in love with her center fabric the first time I saw it.. a variety of colors. still haven't decided on mine, maybe I should pull fabric this morning just for the heck of it and see what I can come up with.. can't wait for pics!

jaba 08-18-2013 06:23 AM

Now you have my curiosity going tlambing, waiting to see your center. Have you come up with anything brat? Anybody else working on their's?

Well, here she is.
12.5, should I go bigger? I'm thinking not.

Questions:
am I to send my fabrics (companions) along or not?

Do we hold off sending until Sept. 15th?

Do you send it through the shredder when you see that some of my points are not absolutely "perfect"?

jaba 08-18-2013 03:22 PM

No shredder here, and depending on what size you want your quilt, make it bigger or not. If you want some of your fabric throughout your quilt then you need to send some with it. I'm going to send maybe a yard at first and then if any of you run out and want some more let me know and I will mail ASAP. Going to send twinriverfarms a PM and ask if I can send my center to her, better check but I think that's who I send to, and if she's says yes, it will be on the way. Whoever sends to me, you can when your center is done. I like your feature block by the way, think it will be awesome

SandyinZ4 08-18-2013 03:23 PM

tlambing, your Center is gorgeous. I fear I am going to have to audition lots of different fabrics for your approval. This is my first time doing a RR so there is a small fear factor! I did get my red fabrics washed last night with 'color catcher. Wow! That is a neat product. I thought it just might be a preventative measure so I wouldn't have 'pink' white sections when quilt was ever washed. So I spent today ironing and figuring out which ones to use. So I guess I am working on it a little. Hope to get my block done sometime by next weekend. Have two other commitments this week so not a lot of time to sew. I thought about doing a red, white and black but it didn't call my name loud enough so I am going with red and white. Just a heads up. :-) After seeing the other RR that some of you are in, wow! Hope I can live up to your standards. Like I said, I may be asking for help a LOT! Will post my block when I get it done. :-)

Jaba... I think I send to you. Need to go check but that is what is in my mind. :-) Hopefully, you will have my block by end of August...because I have company coming on 30th thru Sept 4th!

jaba 08-18-2013 03:30 PM

Send it on, I'm ready. Getting excited to sew on someone's is half the fun.

TwinRiverFarm 08-18-2013 03:46 PM

" As the round, round robin goes bob-bob-bobbin along..." What? no singing? Brat?? Jaba?? Well now that I have got that song running around my head for the rest of the night, my turn to chime in. I live in eastern Virginia, north of the York River. I am 54, semi-retired (just started getting paid for what was a volunteer job!)and happily married to my DH for almost 6 years. 5 grown up kids, 4 grandbabies, 2 dogs, 3 cats, 10 chickens, 11 acres and way too many tomatoes and beans right now. I am an enthusiastic fabric addict. My best thrills come from making something beautiful from discarded stuff, which is why my garden fences used to be our back deck, the arbor is made from a neighbor's pier, and my favorite quilt fabrics seem to come from thrift stores.
I have a closet full of UFO blocks from swaps and started projects, and I am trying to pick my center from them. There are some really beautiful patterns and colors, so choosing is hard. I think I will start with a 12 1/2" block and make it 24 1/2" before mailing it off. Jaba, send yours on anytime, I'm all ready to start!

jaba 08-18-2013 05:09 PM

Perfect, just sent you a PM for your address and it will be in the mail tomorrow.

Elisabrat 08-18-2013 07:08 PM

I hope all of you got the email with the who is mailing to who and addresses. I see we have been moved to swaps which confuses me a bit since it was just a private little swap amongst friends. but well here we are!

Great center Teresa love the rosy colors. Your fabrics showed so much pattern but when cut down they really show splashes of color more :) I am making a blue white and yellow center. Tada finally settled down and picked one. So far I made a very simple center now putting blocks and pinwheels all around it then its on to the next one down the line. I do not have more fabric I was hoping to make it all out of my blue/white fabric but ran out so I am using a very pale yellow and hope to have very little yellow in the whole quilt (its not my favorite fabric color). The fabric is more like a delft pattern or china plate/cup? My daughter in law to be wanted a blue white quilt so this will be for her. So so far we have: a purple/lavender/white quilt, a rose/blue and cream quilt and a blue and white and also I think Sandy said red/white. I say we have a bunch of fun ahead of us. I will post a picture tomorrow of my top. I should be done by noon! most is cut and sewn just four more pinwheels and its put it all together :) Yahoo! Mail when your ready to mail, make sure the person your sending to is not overwhelmed with two or three tops before you send. Some of us are much faster than others. With luck we finish this one in a shorter time frame than planned but we will do the best work we can do and surely it will show :)

SandyinZ4 08-18-2013 07:54 PM

Thanks for the updated mailing list, Brat! I now know that I will always mail to you. Yes, I do plan on having my quilt be just red and white. Will send more details with my package so you all can be watching for reds and whites for mine. :-) Now it is just game on....! Looking forward to helping you all have a fabulous top when we get finished.

Elisabrat 08-19-2013 03:56 AM

oh oh what about a hint of grey in your red/white I know you first considered black and tossed that out but maybe some grey would be a nice additive? red/white is pretty too. I have 8 red/white fabrics so far on my shelf waiting for me to make them into a quilt guess I like your idea. If you saw the red/white that is being made for themamahauser in our other swap the first round was just added and its gorgeous. I am anxious because well how to live up to that!!

Elisabrat 08-19-2013 06:08 PM

make sure in your note to the quilters if you say NO pattern or small pattern or tone on tone or whatever you think will work great go for it.. just write it so no questions later on .. (a lot easier before I think than after lol). We have been moved once again, the moderator did not realize this was private so she put us back in photos. in the future I have to start with a picture to stay there. Lessons learned. we get to travel the board how wonderful!

Okay I'll post again. Twinriverfarms sent this center to you today and some extra peony fabric to use or not, at your discretion. Just please send it on to the next person also, then they can decide to use it or not, and again if someone needs more I will send, just let me know.

tlambing 08-20-2013 06:37 AM

After spending some time staring at my center, I was really not happy with some of my points. So, I am piecing another. Should finish it up tonight :) Then I'll figure out all of the paraphernalia I am supposed to be sending along with it and should have it off to you Jaba by the wknd.

Is there a quilters serenity prayer? Something that when spoken over and over, would help me accept non perfection from myself?

Funny (not) how that is.

jaba 08-20-2013 08:28 AM

Don't know about a prayer for quilters, but there are, at times, a lot of things I say over and over and over :D Will be watching next week for your revised addition

Just a preview of my soon to be center block. I messed up when I was cutting out the fabrics and switched the colors. I did not notice it until I began to lay it out. Then I thought...Oh well...perhaps it was meant to be this way. Will post a pic again after I have it all assembled. There are no directions; just a diagram so hope it goes well. :-)

jaba 08-21-2013 05:27 AM

I think that looks pretty awesome, like it just the way it is.

jaba 08-21-2013 05:30 AM

Twinriverfarm, just checked tracking and my center should be at your house today!

TwinRiverFarm 08-21-2013 03:46 PM

Nope, Miss Jaba, It isn't here yet... wahhhh. I have great hopes for tomorrow, though. I finished my center today, going with a red/white/blue star center, but with a civil war reproduction tone to it. So the colors are more muted, more cream than white, more maroon than red, if that makes sense. Will try to post pictures tomorrow and get it in the mail. I am working a split shift tomorrow, so will rush home for the mailman.

TwinRiverFarm 08-21-2013 04:02 PM

Hi Sandyin24! I am including strips and scraps of the fabrics that were used in my center (it is 18 1/2 " by the way) in case you want to use any. Just pass them on to the next person if you don't use them. Any left to come home at the end will become part of a scrappy binding.

jaba 08-21-2013 06:18 PM

Gees, d--- PO, it was in your town yesterday, hope they decide to deliver tomorrow. I'll check delivery confirmation in the morning. Maybe you can check at work so you don't have to run if not necessary #9114901075742466417464

Elisabrat 08-22-2013 04:18 AM

wow your fast. I took my center and my pinwheels to jans the other day and she agreed ..they didn't work with my center so now onto plan B. Rather figure that out NOW before I send it on and make a disaster quilt :) I am going to make blue and white spools to go around the enlongated shape of the spool will help pull out the design in my center. or I will do plan C a completely different center and the heck with it!

SandyinZ4 08-22-2013 06:33 AM

I am hitting a roadblock of sorts, too on putting my block together. So today will be practicing with scraps making the parts until it comes out right and I can put the red/white one together correctly. I know I am doing something wrong in the sewing together of the pieces when I attach a hst onto a triangle. I come out with no 1/4 inch on edges so if I sew it onto next piece, I will cut off the corners. Hmmm. I figure I have until Monday to get block made as that is when I plan to send it off so I will keep trying. Fingers crossed!

TwinRiverFarm 08-22-2013 12:40 PM

Just a quick note to let you all know that I received Jaba's center today! It is beautiful and it will be thrilling to come up with a suitable enhancement! And I love the journal idea, will be stealing that idea, too! OK, off to work...

jaba 08-22-2013 03:02 PM

So glad you got it, thanks for letting me know. I'm excited to get one soon.

tlambing 08-22-2013 04:15 PM

Hoping to mail on Monday Jaba.
My big machine got a brain freeze and went haywire! It went to the shop today. I've already gotten a call saying it's the power supply blah blah blah and the con_____ser blah blah blah. Should have it back within 2 weeks. Hopefully this'll fix it once and for all. I've had nothing but problems since I bought this machine. UGH! I've had it a yr and a 1/2 and it's been to the shop 5x
On a brighter note, my little Janome is ready to go. I love her :) Never a problem <3
