I am so glad to hear that you'll never let another quilt wait for binding. Where should I send the 4 that I have ready to go? That would certainly get me caught up and back to piecing. ;) |

My first finished UFO of 2013! It is a little cowboy quilt from a Boomerang Swap! This pic was taken a couple of days ago,I FMQ'ed it and put the binding on today, so it is done!..The yellow bandana fabric was my contribution, along with the lower right block...it says I love KJ 97...a favorite CW radio station of the little Texan who will receive this quilt! I love every block the swappers did for me! If you recognize yours...shout it out! ( I left the list at home and I am not there right now).

I have quite a few UFOs - will try to get at least one done in the next couple of weeks to share!
|
I have set a date on my calendar, a friend is coming over for an over nite retreat. We plan to sew, sew sew. Work on projects we have in progress. More projects than we will get done but it is a start. Working on two little scrappies now. Not planning on spending anymore money for quite some time, so this thread is very helpful.

I love all o' these finished quilts!Ring the bell & sing the song!

Ok, I think I'm in...ha ha ha....pulled out a quilt I started 3 yrs ago......thank you for the challenge
|
I'm in. I've already started on my UFO project for this month - a quilt that's been on my "I'm going to finish it this year" list for 2 years running already. Year 3 is the charm - it will be DONE before anything else gets quilted, since it's now loaded on the long arm. So, that means I'll either finish it or have a whole pile of new UFOs :)

Great quilt missgigglewings (and great screen name too)! I really like the cowboy boot block. Are those dogs wearing cowboy hats in the middle block?

Knitette, what a cute quilt. Seeing reminded me of 1 have that just needs the binding & that my daughter told me years ago that she wanted. Maybe I better do that & get at least 1 UFO on the table for January :o

I hear you on the "pacing". I, too, am disabled and must pace myself. I try not to promise anything to anyone (although I did finish a few Christmas gifts...just made the deadline by a cat's whisker). I currently have 3 UFOs. One is 20+ years old! I started a double irish only to discover, after the quilt was 3/4 pieced, that the tension (or something) on my old machine was not working correctly and my seams are coming undone! I went through and pinned everywhere it was loose, but trying to stitch those areas is really difficult as they are tiny and not easy to get under the presser foot cleanly. So I promptly put it away until i could come up with a solution (short of ripping the ENTIRE thing!). Any good ideas on how to "fix" my UFO? I am open to any and all suggestions! My second and third quilts were ideas I had that got started and put on a back burner to work on Christmas pressies. I now also have material for a fourth quilt (although it isn't a UFO because I haven't started it yet). I also promised two pillows to relatives that I have not completed, (or even started for that matter). I have been having a "rough patch" since the new year and haven't been on the sewing machine at all! Boy, do I miss it! Hope my body cooperates soon...I'm going into withdrawal!

An excellent point bigbrownowl!!! We know ourselves and it's important not to set our goals as to be self-defeating or discouraging.
Another example in myself: I don't set any deadlines at all, as being handicapped, I have to listen to the demands of my body and would find a deadline stressful. I apply that to all my quilting, not just UFOs. I will happily make a quilt for someone's birthday, as long as they understand there is no gurantee WHICH birthday they might get it. LOL. Or which month it might arrive all finished. If I promised something by a certain date, I know I would do all I could to meet that goal and hurt myself in the doing. So make your goals gentle on yourself!!! Be kind, and allow lots of room for new beginnings and fun projects also. |
Just finished binding the Winding Ways UFO this morning. Its now in the wash and I will take pictures and post tomorrow. Ding Ding!!! I was SO GLAD to get this thing finished - every time I looked at it I felt guilty!

Here is my first finished UFO, "Oh My Stars" for 2013. This is a round robin done with my DD last fall. I wanted it to be BRIGHT and it certainly turned out that way. I quilted it in variegated thread and did a decorative stitch on the binding.I had other fabric for the back, but found this cheater cloth and felt it was perfect. Wow gramajo. What a find. That cheater looks perfect!

Granmajo - love your quilt! What a find with that cheater cloth. |
Ring the bells & sing the song!!!! Wow ya'll are goin' great!!!
|
Knitette, love your quilt. What great outfits they are wearing.
Gramajo, you're bright colors and backing are perfect. Wildyard.....have you considered ironing on a muslin interfacing? They make one-sided. You could stabilize it that way and add the rest of your blocks. Once the top and sandwich are together you could heavily quilt it, especially along the seams such as SID on both sides of the seams. I think that would hold it well. What do you think? |
Loving those finishes! Great work.
|
Cute snowmen Knitette. :)

Got to ask with that name......Girl Guide?

Count me in too, but not seriously until February. I have about 8 projects outstanding, and really need to crack on and finish them. 2 projects are Christmassy ones, and it would be really lovely to finish them by next Christmas!
This month is a bit busy, so I am setting myself February as my start date - that way I won't get too discouraged before I even start! |
NICE quilt GramaJo!!! Ring that bell for sure!

OK guys - RING THAT BELL! The 15 year old Winding Ways quilt is done, washed, and in my truck!!! Lessons learned on this one:
1. NEVER use cotton sheeting if you are going to hand or machine quilt! 2. NEVER use high loft batting if you are going to hand or machine quilt! 3. If you hate hand quilting, DON'T start it!!! 4. Consider carefully the time you will put in if you plan to echo quilt! So the quilt is purple and since our school colors are purple and white I figure I can take it to football games. I do wish I had done a better job on it since the pattern is very pretty but I am so disgusted I will probably never make another one. |
Wow NJ, it's beautiful!! Great finish.
|
Ring, ring JN. It may have been a pain to quilt, but it turned out beatifully.
|
JNCT14 That is one gorgeous quilt. You better cover it if you leave it in the truck/car.
|
Hurray JNCT1! You did it, it's done, you learned something and now you can work on something fun!

"And another one's down, and another one's down, and another one bites the dust..."
Lovely quit!! |
That looks awesome!!!! Love it.
|
I want to hear more about the admonition against sheeting. I used sheeting on a recent quilt and noticed no difficulty in hand quilting. What difficulty did you run into ?
|
That sounds like the discussion of why would you put in those old blankets inbetween a quilt as batting? I do that when I have them in my scrap quilts, they are just as warm if not warmer than cotton and quilt up just as well.

Yes it was high thread count so the needling was really tough, the batting bearded all over the place and when i gave up on hand quilting the durned thing and went to machine it, the top thread kept shredding - yu could actually hear it pop as the needle went into the fabric. I probably should have washed the sheeting to get the sizing out of it - that may have helped as well. UGH
|
LOL, I just love it when "cheap" is the best thing to use. I use sheets all the time. Mostly for piecing since I primarily use fleece for my backings. I always check the thread content and 'feel' of the fabric. I also agree that washing the sizing out, in this case, would have been helpful. As a rule tho, I sit in the "do not prewash" camp.
I find most of my sheets in the thrift stores so prewashing them is usually not something to decide about. LOL Just wanted to add, our local Real Deals dollar store often has fleece on huge rolls for $1.00 a linear foot. When they have colors that are realistic for my quilt back, I snap them up. |
Love your quilt, asimplelife!
|
JNCT14 - your quilt is beautiful and I really appreciate hearing about your lessons learned too. My Mom hand quilted a bed size quilt and said NEVER AGAIN and after doing my 1st HQ very small project last month I would agree. I loved the look but was oh so happy it was 9 blocks of limited quilting. And now I appreciate using my machine for quilting all the more!
Wildyard - I do a lot of string blocks on muslin and love using fleece as one step batting & backing for kids quilts. It adds such a soft cuddly feel and makes the quilt a perfect weight (IMO) for a small child. I pick it up whenever I get find a bargain too. Thank you Lots2do! |
