JJBlaine those are adorable! I'm envious i so want a grandbaby! Just keep on sewing for that new little one. Rob sorry about your sewing day. Honestly I've had those days. You think the ufo is cursed?☺

Teen 08-17-2018 09:30 PM

Congratulations, JJBlaine. Your granny gifts are all so wonderful. Those booties are the cutest e-v-e-r.... Seriously some fun stuff for the new munchkin. So happy for you...

OMGosh, Rob... Hilarious!!! You've had quite the day....The baste will stick....I have to do that all the time and I have no problems.

I started cutting...all from my stash....a QOV and pulled the fabric panel out to get a gander at it....That panel is huge....way too huge for what I had planned so, plan B...I'm winging it on a pattern and I have just enough....It needs white so I was slinging bolts around and found a bolt of WOW stars. All the stars have aligned. I love it when that happens..

SillySusan 08-18-2018 05:30 AM

LLB, you are so ready for that new grandbaby! A big congrats. to you and his or her mommy! Babies are true blessings! Your baby items are beautiful!

SillySusan 08-18-2018 05:33 AM

Rob, I feel your anguish! All those #%&@# words! But, you can do this. Take a deep breath and carry on! :)

It's beginning to feel that way...This UFO was put together several years ago, taken apart because the proportions of the background filler strips just didn't look right, so I re-sized some of them to make better proportions and put it back together only to have some very long filler strips cause all kinds of waviness etc. because I somehow mis-measured, so I took it apart again and put it on the UFO pile where it sat for at least 3 years...When I took it back out I thought it would be a quick finish since all I had to do was re-size the offending filler strips and reassemble----little did I know... I swear I hear the music from "Psycho" every time I walk past it-- I'm sure that's just in my head:shock:....

I made a purposeful trip to JoAnn’s today to buy backing for my current quilt. I bought 1 entire bolt plus the yard on another. It looks like it will be a BIG quilt. I also found I’m running out of the sashing fabric so I bought more of that. Unfortunately they didn’t have the exact fabric I’ve been using so I bought some that is very similar. I think it’ll blend well. None of this should go into the stash & all other fabric for the top is from stash.

Krisb 08-18-2018 02:02 PM

Rob, I had a UFO that was like that. I still call it the Quilt From Hell; nothing ever worked as planned. After a long break to get the new machine and tables and sell the china and sterling to partially pay for it (and make room),I am finally back working on the diamond log cabin.

Into the lion's den I went. I visited a quilt shop out in the country looking for fish fabric. They have Moda fabrics which the one downtown doesn't. Oh, my. Every one was prettier than the last. What did I purchase? 1/2 yard of fish fabric for a baby quilt - the parents and grandparents are all fishermen. I had planned a fish quilt, but there are Jacob's Ladder blocks in my deceased SIL's stash. I will sew those together for the front and use the fish print with some of my stash on the back. So a total of 18" of fabric bought for one quilt isn't too bad.

Conchalea, my Irish Chain on machine #2 has two separate off whites. I think it will be fine when it's quilted as will yours.

Teen 08-18-2018 02:26 PM

You guys are did great on your recent foray into fabricland.

Conchalea...one bolt for backing?...goodness, that is a big quilt.

Irishrose....I can't wait to see the fish baby quilt. Sounds like a fun theme to play with...

I think I'm going to get 2 QOV out of all the blocks I made (by accident..lol). My math was off so one top will be as planned and the other top a different layout. This makes me very happy since I had 2 veterans on my list to make. Still everything from my stash....very satisfying...

Yep-this quilt has grown & grown... It's my version of the Hanging Garden. I used 2 FQs for a focus fabric & wanted to use all of both. I don’t have the actual pattern but I’ve figured it out. I kept on making blocks & ended up with 32 Final blocks. Now that I’m adding 4-Patch cornerstones with sashing, the blocks are VERY large! The bolt had 8 yards on it-is that the typical amount?

Usually, there are 15 yds on a bolt of quilting cotton at the retail level, but I have seen 6, 12,and 25.

Thanks for clarifying. There were 8 on the bolt I bought so that’s a small amount, apparently. I hope that plus the 1 yard on another bolt will be enough for this ever-expanding quilt. I didn’t set out to make one this large. Since it is so big, I may try QAYG for the individual blocks. I’ve been watching various YouTube videos with some different techniques. I’m eager to try out that process.

Battle Axe 08-22-2018 07:08 AM

Does it count against you if you order some fabric on line that is grey/tan/neutrals???? I am usually hunting a better light neutral and Quilted Twins had a $20.00 plus $5.00 shipping deal I just could not pass up.

Marcia

I think I used my biopsy exemption. The dr. did not think it was cancer but rather non-cancerous polyps.

SillySusan 08-22-2018 12:32 PM

Hi y'all, I have a confession to make. Yesterday I went to my favorite little thrift shop and saw a king size flat sheet in an unusual shade of green, perfect for a few crib sheets and even a few baby quilt backings. I didn't get it and I was ok with passing it up. I remembered my pledge. But on the way out, the cashier told me about a wonderful one-day sale on for today! I went home and thought about it. I could get that sheet for 50 cents!! So early this morning I ran down there and ... someone bought before I got there. :( I guess it is for the best, because I didn't break my promise,....but I "sinned" in my heart. Woe is me! :(

Battle Axe 08-22-2018 01:42 PM

SillySusan, Certainly there is some exemption out there that you can use to exponge this sin. I think anything that you intend to recycle, and the sheet would have qualified, is exempt.

Irishrose2 08-22-2018 01:50 PM

I'm working on a Jacob's Ladder quilt from my SIL's UFOs. I cab see why it was put aside. Sone of the four patches are more than 1/4" too small. Sone of the HSTs are too wide on one side. It might have been easier to donate it.

Not quilty, but used a couple of yards from my stash.

My SIL was talking about how quickly my niece is outgrowing her clothes. She'll be 3 in November and a size 5 is already snug on her. So I decided to whip up a couple of simple pillowcase dresses. Since the dresses tie at the shoulder, and I made them a little long, she should be able to wear them for a good while. I would have liked to add a few embellishments, but didn't want to spend that much time on them until I find out if my brother and SIL like the style.

Lol @ Batleaxe comments...too funny.

Irishrose2..... I know that feeling well....I picked up a half-done quilt at an estate sale once and quickly realized why it was only half-done.....I finished it and donated it with all its imperfections. Her legacy goes on...

JJBlaine....goodness, girl...you are so busy and so talented. Those are adorable and so sweet of you... Never heard of a pillowcase dress. Cute cute..

SillySusan 08-22-2018 04:46 PM

Thanks, Battleaxe, for the suggestion. Next week I'll have a colonoscopy exemption I could use, but the truth in that is I'd rather have the "sin" than have the colonoscopy!!

JJB., those little dresses are really cute! She'll love them

I bought several bright quilt tops done by "grandma" at a garage sale, thinking I could cut them up for prayer quilts. Uhh- Grandma's machine's tension was so off it was all loopy and would never hold. Another member of our group took then home to take them apart and redo them. Not my thing. They have never returned and that was several years ago. No big deal - they are out of my house.

Battle Axe 08-23-2018 03:02 AM

A real funny that happened to me. I would plan my prep day on Sunday and then have the procedure on Monday. So I drank my first bottle and about 2 or 3 p.m. I get "that feeling". Went to the bathroom and discovered that the sewer line had backed up. All my bathrooms are on the same sewer line. I ended up with my potty chair and called the plumber on Monday after the big deal!

The colonoscopy is one of the best things I ever did. I had some funny colored blood in the stool and my brother convinced me to do the colonoscopy. They found a polyp that tested 1 +. The dr. hooked on to the polyp and ripped it out. The pain caused me to wake up and I got up and took a swing at the dr.

The next one they did they asked, "How asleep do you want to be?" They all remembered me. We all lived and 6 years later I have no cancer thanks to the brave dr.

Battleaxe- hope the biopsy goes well. And definitely deserving of an exemption. Sounds like you got a great deal on the neutrals!

Silly Susan- Good job staying strong during the moment of initial temptation. The fact that you did not at that point act on the lust in your heart, but waited until overnight (perhaps subconsciously thinking the sheet might be gone) shows incredible fortitude.

It sure seems like everyone is doing very well. I lusted after a fat quarter bundle of that luscious Marcus designs muslin on the Craftsy website, but didn’t buy it. The fat quarters are dyed in the most delicious shaded colors and I bought one bundle last year with my birthday exemption. I haven't used it yet because it's too wonderful to open but I spend a lot of time taking it out of storage just to gaze lovingly at it (and also petting it), so it's not like it’s being neglected and I do believe that there is room enough in my heart to take in another bundle, but I am (so far) staying strong...

Rob

Conchalea 08-23-2018 04:09 AM

I’m using everyone’s unused exemptions trying to finish a couple of projects. The WOW I bought for my version of Hanging Gardens just didn’t work so I ordered more from Joann’s website. I’m in the mood to work on that but I have to wait for it to arrive. I also bought fabric for backing & binding my daughter’s UFO. I think I’m going to try QAYG on the 3 large sections of this one. Otherwise it will probably overwhelm my DSM. I used an app to calculate how much backing I’ll need. I certainly hope it knows what it’s talking about!

Teen 08-23-2018 08:41 AM

Battle Axe...OMG....hilarious....that must of been awful about sewer line. I wanted to punch my doctor too. Lol...

Proud of you, Rob.... I have alot of precuts I just stare at lovingly myself so I know the feeling. I'm making my way through them when inspiration hits but it's hard to whack into them. All the quilting emails I get drive me nuts with all the temptations but I just delete them. Hard to do..

Conchalea ...I've not tried QAYG method yet. I keep waiting for the right project to try it. Share how that goes for you.

SillySusan 08-23-2018 04:41 PM

Rob, thanks for the kind words. This fortitude stuff is really tough!! We just have to hang in there!

Battle Axe, what a hard time you had!! I'm so glad you survived both the bathroom problem and the pain with a sense of humor. I hate these "procedures". I landed in the hospital after the last one with colitis. No fun!! Hate it!! Hate it!!

Oh geesh...I flubbed up Saturday. Went to LQS to buy more forest green for my Classc Santa quilt and stumbled on this lusciousness ....3yd bundle of Northcott for only $12.00. That's $4/yd for Northcott. I have no plans for it....just fell in love with it.. It's from the Topsy Turvy line, which are all adorably sweet.... I did 20 push-ups to atone...

Blue Bell 08-27-2018 02:39 PM

Great price, awesome fabric, terrific buy.

That's a great price, 20 pushups seems excessive, though...

Oh.. Did I say 20? I meant I did push-ups for 20'seconds...so....3 maybe. Lol..

Been feeling a bit overwhelmed with fabric! I love it and yet I have overloaded on it. A closet full & 10 totes. What was I thinking? So this week I made these burp cloths, and paci clips, lot of receiving blankets. Teething bunny ears & unpaper towels. More burp cloths & such today & a baby quilt top is on the design wall. Staying out of Joann's this week.

Blue Bell 08-30-2018 06:32 PM

I know the feeling. I am overwhelmed with the amount of fabric, too. I skipped a quilt show and 2 quilt store sales past 2 weeks so that I wouldn't buy fabric, etc.

retiredteacher09 09-01-2018 05:40 AM

Deedum and Bluebell: I know the feeling of overwhelmed by fabric. I have been feeling that way lately because I have had some larger donations of scraps and am behind in sorting them. :(.

I also get this feeling every year as the school year approaches because I know my time is limited before my subbing schedule gets hectic. I probably have about 6 weeks until that happens so I am sewing lots. :).

However, I do enjoy working with children and interacting with the adults so all will be good.

ckcowl 09-03-2018 09:36 AM

I continue to do good with my moratorium, but boy- my husband sure knows how to blow it!
We took off for a couple days away after a pretty stressful couple weeks. Visited a quilt shop- we were laughing as we pulled in about how he should stay in the car- he tends to cost me....
he came in....
in his defense he did purchase 12 yards of king size 80/20 batting at a really good price ($112) but they had flannels on sale & he seems to really love flannel. Doesn’t seem to matter that I have 2 large black trash bags full of flannel I haven’t had time to do anything with....
the bill total came to $178 , so I guess the fabric purchase was only $66 but now I have more ( stash fabric) to deal with. It was Birthday gift and I didn’t spend any money, but.... I’m really trying to declutter....
i do love that man, he knows I haven’t visited a quilt shop in months....he’s such an ( enabler) ;)

elly66 09-04-2018 06:32 AM

ckcowl how sweet of him. It is nice they appreciate the time a quilt takes and want to be supportive of our hobbies. My hubby was just as thrilled as I was that our new house has a designated quilt room. In fact when our realtor stopped by he asked how the quilt room was shaping up!

Must admit that everything that goes in there I moved myself. Amazing how much fabric weighs so it wasn't easy but I was determined to do it. From sorting to loading and unloading and of course unpacking I have accomplished doing 99% of it. Figured if I was going to keep it all, I would be the one to move it all.

I am thrilled with the room and after spending the last several days putting things in their new place, I am itching to sew. Holding myself back as I'm half afraid if I start I'll never finish tidying the room up. :) The most frequent phrase that ran through my mind (besides that's heavy) was "you have a LOT of fabric". Hopefully that will help with my moratorium for awhile.

Battle Axe 09-04-2018 06:38 AM

I had fun last evening shopping....in my stash. I'm doing the Summer at the Cabin sampler and this block calls for 3 greens. Wow I found just what I was looking for. Trouble is, I will use up the nice little Ginko leaf print. Oh the humanity! Will there ever be anymore?

Maybe I can get this block done before I have to go find out if they want to take out my gall bladder. Marcia

SillySusan 09-04-2018 12:35 PM

Battle Axe, I'm so happy that you found everything you need in your stash. I think when you need more of that new green fabric, you'll be able to find it... in your stash. I am positive that it reproduces in the piles in the closets, shelves and bins!!

Taking out a gall bladder doesn't sound like too much fun!! Here's hoping for the best for you. Tell that mean doctor you can't spare the time.... You have to quilt!!! :)

deedum 09-04-2018 01:28 PM

retiredteacher09 I get overwhelmed because I have so many hobbies, quilting, machine embroidering, now Brother cut n scan, so many others. I just serged leftover flannels for a scrap baby quilt. FM it now, and I think it is going to be a cutie. Might be serging more quilts in the future to use up some of the fabric...I got a vendor fair to do in November, and Christmas gifts to do. I thought there would be more time to sew now that I am semi retired.. I love it all.

oksewglad 09-04-2018 02:58 PM

I have a new little project and using up small pieces...trouble is not using enough of them...have 26 done and want to do about 10 more. And the mess I have as I choose the bits and pieces proves I have a problem:D:D:D
