I need to report that this "Can't see the forest for the trees" is now crossed off the UFO list. I put a different border on it and had enough this time. Now I'm going to make a mini forest and use up the Jinny Beyer border fabric.

sewbizgirl 02-15-2019 04:21 PM

That forest top look great, Battle Axe. Love it.

retiredteacher09 02-15-2019 05:59 PM

Congratulations Battle Axe! Very pretty!

Sync 02-15-2019 06:39 PM

Nice finish Battle Axe.

Watson 02-16-2019 05:39 AM

Very nice, Battle Axe....That border goes well.

Watson

PS...so, I missed a few on my inventory of UFO's....*sigh* I'll just keep plugging away.

I am so tempted by Barbara Brackman's new QAL Civil War Quilts Hospital Sketches. One of MrOk's ancestors became a CW nurse when her husband enlisted for the North.

I must say no!

Sync 02-16-2019 10:52 AM

Dang, oksewglad .......... I just had to go and click on that link, now I have to be strong and say no too .............

oksewglad 02-16-2019 01:27 PM

Well Teen I haven't done much applique and thought maybe this would be a fun one to try...help me help me!!!! Colorways a lot different than your JK quilts!

Oh!! a BB quilt that's applique! Nice!!

Here's my progress on my Birthday Candies quilt--

sewbizgirl 02-16-2019 01:56 PM

I have no problem resisting all that needleturn applique, but I loved looking at all the pictures and reading the stories on that site... especially about Louisa May Alcott. Thank you for the link, OKsewglad. I have one of Barbara Brackman's books and I started making all the blocks from it, in order. It is... alas... a UFO.

Givio... sometimes 'progress' is two steps forward and one step back! Nice pile of 'rippage'. :D

oksewglad 02-16-2019 02:00 PM

Pretty colors, givio...I can see this used with a technique I saw where you place washable film on top and stitch the fibers with FMQ (random). Then wash the piece to dissolve the film and you have new fabric. Looking for a link now.

Found it!

Pretty Straight forward applique and a good one to get your feet wet. colorway not so different than JK...just fabric prints different since reproduction and not modern fabrics. No polka dots on this one...lol.. I printed out pattern so I'll see what I have access to...if not, I just collect patterns as they become available.. Loving the stories shared....

I have a finish. DS1's quilt is on his bed ready for his return from a weekend away.

sewbizgirl 02-17-2019 04:44 AM

Great finish, Pearl40. I love black, white and red.

Sync 02-17-2019 12:03 PM

congrats on the finish, it looks great.

Belfrybat 02-17-2019 12:35 PM

Wow, wonderful finishes. I'm a UFO dropout right now since I received 3 quilt tops to be finished (plus a bunch of orphan blocks). I can't count the tops as my UFOs -- they were given already completed. Plus I started three more quilt along projects (of course I did!). So... even though no UFOs so far this month, I have been a busy quilter.

givio 02-17-2019 03:20 PM

Pearl40, Looks like a disappearing 9patch? It looks like you collected quite a variety of B&W prints! Nice job.

OK, another way to make that idea that I've seen is to use netting-- a large hole netting over the top of the threads and fabric trimmings. If you use a fine small hole mesh then you can't see the pieces through it well. It can make an interesting wall hanging. I've seen them decorated with large embroidery stitching, sequins, beads, etc.

oksewglad 02-17-2019 03:30 PM

So great to see someone getting quilts finished...way to go, folks!

Yes I have seen it done with the netting, too.

I did get a homespun top done from stash and plan on getting some 90" wide Minky to put on the back for my GSon. That's on hold until I get our taxes done...back to the salt mine!

retiredteacher09 02-17-2019 05:08 PM

Pearl40: Very nice quilt!

Belfrybat: You are just taking a break from UFO's. :) Enjoy finishing the tops given to you. Orphan blocks are fun too.

Oksewglad: Glad you got your top done. Taxes, ugh! Mine are simple to do but gathering the information and making an appointment to get them done is another thing. :)

Sinus infection and fluid on my ears set me back this past week. I finally felt better and was trying to get my UFO borders on and ran into a bit of a problem with one of the sides. It went on beautifully but I had the wrong colors matching. GRRR! Jack and I took out almost 88" of stitching. :( Heading down to sew again and hope to finish the last of the borders while listening/watching to the All Star basketball game.

Whew! My UFO top is done and it will now wait for me to get the courage to quilt it. It’s going to be my summer quilt for my bed. It’s 87” square and I can’t figure out how I want to make it longer. I only have scraps of the solid rose/pink, mint (looks white in picture), and the rose pink design fabric. I don’t want to add any more of the green with pink flowers which I plan to use for the backing. My niece and I thought a mint colored king size sheet could go under the quilt to give it an illusion of being bigger. Now I’m leaning toward a little darker color and maybe rose/pink. I guess time will only tell. :). Suggestions welcome.

It’s history: 2015-did 25 blocks in a BOW; 2016-online person added 24 more blocks for a BOW; 2017- I purchased dashing; 2018-put blocks and horizontal sashing together; 2019-finished the top.

oksewglad 02-18-2019 03:12 PM

Soon you can call it a finish, retiredT... A maxim shared by a guild member was to go darker the further one goes out..maybe you can find a marble type fabric (or Grunge) that matches the dark fabric in the border and blocks, then use that as a binding. Thanks for sharing your timeline.

Tax appt is a thing of the past...now what...haha. Our accountant teased me about going down the street to "shop"...he knows me too well...bonus is it is one building closer as CPA moved into a larger building next door! And yes I stopped, but that's a story for another thread!

sewbizgirl 02-18-2019 04:00 PM

That's a great quilt, Connie! So many hsts....

UFO progress

Think I will be able to finish this 3-D block wall hanging in February. Worked on mitered borders.

Will do simple quilting, really want to finish this in February.

Judy in Phx, AZ

retiredteacher09 02-18-2019 04:54 PM

Oksewglad: I had not heard that maxim. It makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing. I was wondering about a grunge fabric. My LQS is getting Grunge in stock now. I better write myself a note to take it with me next week to a class so I can ‘audition’ some fabrics. If it gets much bigger, I may need to have the LQS long arm it. :). Wahoo for your taxes being done! Lots of time invested in record keeping for farmers.

sewbizgirl: Thanks! The gal hosting it had us make tubes and then cut the triangle shape. Not sure if I explained that correctly. :). It was a new concept for me. I bought my die cutter between the 2 HST Challenge years but I didn’t have the right dies or the expertise to figure it out. I’m much better now and would probably just use a different block size according to my dies. Lol!

judy: I’m cheering for you to finish it. You can do it! Looking forward to pictures.

On a side note: A friend from church called today and asked me if I would come to her house when I had time because she couldn’t get her needle in her machine. I got there and put the needle in quickly (her fingers are stiff and she thinks she was putting it in backwards). Then she told me her needle threader wasn’t working correctly. I quickly realized she had her pressure foot down and that was one of the problems. I also think she wasn’t putting the needle at the right height. My heart hurts for her as I have seen her slow down quite a bit this winter. She was so thankful and I finished a block to make sure the machine ran and put a drop of oil in the shuttle area. She said ‘thank you, Ray.’ Her late husband maintained her machines so that was a special compliment because he was a dear man.

Teen 02-18-2019 07:16 PM

Such a sweet heart you have, Connie! Precious story!

joe'smom 02-18-2019 08:41 PM

What a wonderful quilt, Connie!

Sync 02-19-2019 10:09 AM

Lovely quilt, Connie.

retiredteacher09 02-19-2019 05:37 PM

Thank you for the compliments.

Teen 02-21-2019 06:38 PM

UFO diverted!!!! The recent Dresden quilt I made with scraps was going to hang incomplete for awhile since my fabric is packed and I refused to buy more fabric when a I know I have something. This is going to hospice so I chatted it up with the gals in the guild who are collecting the hospice quilts and one of them said.."just give it to me...I'll finish it for you". Woohoo.... So so nice of her...delivering it to her tomorrow. I felt guilty so I did prepare the batting and binding for her. She just has to do the backing with stash and quilt it. Yea!

oksewglad 02-21-2019 07:14 PM

In my mind the quilt is outta the house and off the UFO list, Teen!

Last night I pulled out my Tula Pink City Sampler blocks made from scrap batiks. I had them sewn in vertical strips. I got the vertical sashes and top spacers cut out an am now sewing it all together...gonna love this full size quilt. I didn't use all 100 blocks, but that's okay. It was a fun set of blocks to sew.

In my fabric fall I found fabric to finish off a little star mini block and hope to get that finished up before too long, too. So UFO's may fall as well.

Conchalea 02-22-2019 04:57 AM

Teen & OK, good news on your UFO fronts! OK, good use of the ‘fall’ scraps you received. So that fall wasn’t too bad if it means a languishing UFO gets finished & off your pile. I think it balances out.

Well, surprise of surprises! I finished two UFOs this week. The first is a melding of two quilts. Years ago I sewed jillions of 4 patches that measured 9-1/2". It was for a snowball quilt on MSQC. I was a new quilter and had no idea how many patches I would end up with! Then.... fast forward to last year when I needed some off-white 6-1/2" squares for a quilt. I got carried away. So... I cut down the remaining 4 patches, snowballed the 6-1/2 squares and voila'. A UFO finish. The second is a but more mundane. Last fall I cut out simple quilt kits for our prayer quilt group to make and whipped one up during a very cold day last week. I don't count a quilt finished until it's quilted and bound, and that I finished last night.

joe'smom 02-22-2019 07:23 AM

That is a pretty snowball quilt, Belfrybat. I like your choice of border fabric -- it doesn't upstage the quilt center. Congrats on the two finishes!

Teen 02-22-2019 07:45 AM

Love both quilts, Belfrybat... I'm starting a snowball quilt but I'll be making floral blocks with mine. However, I like the 4P pattern too.

Sync 02-22-2019 10:42 AM

Belfrybat, congrats on your finishes. They look wonderful.

oksewglad 02-22-2019 04:01 PM

Two for Belfrybat! Yeah....I love how you deviated from the original plan and "put 2, 2 quilts in one!" Great thinking. The second lovely will be greatly appreciated by some fortunate person! Like you I don't call it done until the bindings finished...and that's when I count my fabric usage as well.

I have about three vertical seams an top and bottom borders to sew on the Tula Pink City quilt. Then I can find some backing and get it quilted. I started cutting scraps for the blocks at least 4 years ago if not longer.

retiredteacher09 02-22-2019 04:44 PM

Nice quilts, Belfrybat! Congratulations on the UFO finishes.

Belfrybat 02-23-2019 06:53 AM

Thanks everyone. Right now I'm working on someone else's UFOs. A kind person from this board sent me several quilt tops, half finished quilts, and orphan blocks. Since they are not my UFOs I won't count them and will post the pics in the pictures section as they are finished. So probably no more countable UFOs from me for at least a month.

I took this picture when I pulled this UFO out earlier in the week. Now have only 3 vertical and 2 horizontal seams to sew and can call this flimsy ready for the LA.
My other UFO I'm working on will take some time..I started these hexi's in 2013 and decided they would be a good TV watching project.
