Wahoo! Another top finished! 20 more blocks from my UFO which was Summer Moon by Carrie Nelson. The remaining 4 blocks will go into a scrappy quilt top.

This quilt top measures around 70” by 81” and will go into the church pile to finish someday but my part is done for now.

Retiredteacher09, congrats! Beautiful colors.

I have stalled. I'm supposed to be basting a full size quilt. And I did lay it out on the floor tonight to get started, but it's wider than my pieced backing...so the existential drama begins! Do I trim the top or add to the backing? I'm leaning toward the latter because I chose the border widths intentionally.

Also it doesn't quite fit in this spot on the floor so maybe I need to do this on my kitchen floor? (Ugh!) Or board baste it at the table?

I like big quilts, but they are a pain in the...back. Yeah, back.

Sync 10-05-2020 08:11 PM

Another great finish retired teacher.

entangled, yup easier to add to the backing than trim those borders. That is a sweet top and I do agree that big quilts are a pain in the ............... back. That is why when I have a large quilt that is to big to fit in my floor frame, I send it to my longarmer.

oksewglad 10-06-2020 05:11 AM

Your color choices for connecting blocks balance the quilt nicely, reT. Well done.

Great neutral colors, entangled....I'd rather add to the back...A strip of leftover fabric off set makes for an interesting back.

Count a finish for me! Many years in the making! A big quilt, too. I used 2 widths of different fabric with a 12" strip of fabric between for the backing. My binding was made of the backing trimmings and a little bit extra left over fabric. I have very little of the three fabrics left...win win. Will try to get a pic by the weekend. Working on binding another quilt so may have UFO's to take pictures of them by then.

Panchita 10-06-2020 05:43 AM

QuiltBaer I love your quilts, especially the second one.

entangled 10-06-2020 07:51 AM

I really want to start a new top. REALLY REALLY. I think I am going to put the fence rail quilt aside for a day or so and try to channel this piecing energy into one of my other UFOs. Mercy!

joe'smom 10-06-2020 08:33 AM

retiredteacher, I just love your checkerboard quilt! The sampler blocks stand out beautifully in that setting.

entangled, have you tried any of the table basting methods?

rryder 10-06-2020 01:29 PM

Beautiful quilts QuiltBaer- Congratulations on getting them finished!

Love those colors,Connie!

Entangled- table basting works great and isn't such a pain in the....back as floor basting.

Rob

retiredteacher09 10-06-2020 07:14 PM

Thank you for the compliments. I need to square up some blocks that were my leader/enders and finish up a WIP before I can move on to my next UFO.

entangled: I like that top. Good luck with your backing fabric problem.

oksewglad: I look forward to seeing your UFO or maybe your UFOs.

No sewing time for me today. I spent the day at a niece’s house helping her sons with distance learning. I worked and played mostly with the Kindergartener. It’s fun just to be involved with teaching again since I’m taking a subbing break for a while. It’s a 50 minute trip each way but priceless to be around family.

oksewglad 10-08-2020 05:18 PM

Another finish last night...red wonky stars in news print sashing! Hope to take pics on Saturday...work tomorrow and the sun doesn't last as long these days!

Finally finished my nephew's quilt.
Pattern is "boomerang" by Jaybird Quilts
Fabric is "Yankee Doodles" FQ bundle I got a few years ago from Craftsy (before it became Bluprint and now back to Craftsy).
I added the piano key borders to bring the throw size to a 71x92 generous twin. He's in 4th grade now, but this way it will last a good long time.
I love my longarm lady! She bound and put on the label. So when things go to her- they come back *finished*.

retiredteacher09 10-10-2020 04:16 PM

oksewglad: Wahoo on another finish for you. I look forward to seeing pictures.

Rff1010: Congratulations on a very nice finish. Your nephew will love it!

Nice finish Rff1010- Congratulations!

Rff1010, great finish, your nephew will love it.

September finishes

Well. i have been stalling on doing Sept finishes, hoping that some more would appear out of the ether. They did not. So here are the 8 that I have, counting all of entangled’s 2020 finishes.

Covid 19 alone can’t beat us, but covid plus wildfires plus hurricanes sure can slow us down. Or divert us from planned UFO completion into buying more fabric or making more tops. Like a bird dog: Look! Pretty fabric! Owner may have wanted me to bring back ball, but I am chasing the squirrel!

It seems appropriate to say “Out of 20 possible finishes in September, you have registered a meager 8. But who is still adding to her UFO tally instead of reducing the pile? Krisb, you are the weakest link!”

Conchelea qnd K continue to save the rest of us from ourselves.

Nice finishes here! K completed the last top from her daughter's collection, so now she's sewing string blocks. This makes 4 UFOs we've finished for September & 28 since June. A local woman will pick up another load of quilts to hand out to needy residents when cold weather arrives. Our first day of fall was cloudy & cool, with some drizzle.

Connie is keeping on the one per month grack.

I just finished a top with 48 blocks of 72 from my Summer Moon UFO. I made the insides of the blocks during our Friday classes last summer at a LQS. Then it took me a while to frame them according to the pattern. I knew I wouldn’t be happy with all of the light backgrounds when I was making it so I decided to use sashing instead of setting the blocks side by side. It’s 69.5” by 80” and will go into the church donation pile for our group to finish some day (or maybe just me if we can’t meet soon).

We welcome entangled to the group and And, yes, I am counting everything she has done in 2020, even before she “officially” enrolled. 🤫

i would also love to count Teen’s finish, but she says it does not meet her definition,

entangled 10-12-2020 01:58 PM

Oh wow, I didn't know there was a monthly tally! That's great -- extra motivation! And thanks for counting my babes. They weren't all finished in September exactly, but close -- and September was their QB debut so I think that works well. 😉

oksewglad 10-12-2020 05:19 PM

Thanks for the update krisb! Let's see how October goes for us all. We are already into the second week. We can get more than 8 can't we? As previously noted I have 2 UFO's done (sorry no photos yet) and finished a baby quilt that did not become a UFO...did you hear that Teen? I have a stack of quilt tops from our church that I may finish...I think they will count as UFO's although not my own. They have been around for quite a while.

Another UFO top finished! Wahoo! I even made a backing from fabric that was purchased maybe 10 years ago at a garage sale for only a few dollars.

On the bottom rows, I used the last 4 of my 72 blocks from the UFO Summer Moon. The Dresden blocks were in a church quilting donation as was the handquilted basket block. I framed them to add some color to the quilt top. The colorful strips were orphan strips and the 6” blocks, cut by my church group, have resided in my house for many years waiting to be used. The green chevron fabric is the only fabric from my personally owned stash in the top.

I found out today that my church group met yesterday and can now meet on Tuesday mornings again. I will be happy to join them in November and even more happy to give them all of the tops I have finished. I also have 2 big rolls of batting for the group. It will be nice to say farewell to the quilts and batting. 😀

Sync 10-14-2020 05:27 PM

retired teacher, congrats on another UFO top finished.

oksewglad 10-14-2020 06:17 PM

Connie you do such a great job of putting orphan blocks together! Another UFO count! Yay!

cherrybsixty 10-14-2020 08:17 PM

Hi everyone, just lurking around thought that I'd at least say good evening loving everything that you all are completing. I did manage to finish that hand embroidery baby bib, yesterday and another butcher's apron. I've been mostly working on the mask, the oldest DD orders three or four at a time and pays me the same amount that she pays her custom mask-makers. Hopefully, I will get a quilt project started in the near future, still working on that s/m cabinet and just recently picked up my other DD Janome from the OSMG. It sews like a top now.

Stay safe everyone

Great finish, Connie!

retiredteacher09 10-15-2020 05:24 PM

Thank you for the compliments.

My house is less cluttered today as I dropped off all of my tops I made since early March and 2 backings along with 2 huge rolls of batting in our church quilting room. Now I need to start making more tops. Lol!

WMUTeach 10-16-2020 02:37 AM

Your house must feel empty! You are so productive! After a couple of quilting related responsibilities this morning, I am going to dive into my UFO pile and pick one out to finish before the end of the month. It is high time I start contributing to this group again. I have plenty, and keep finding more, UFO's to pick from! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif

retiredteacher09 10-16-2020 06:20 AM

WMUTeach: The space where I had the quilt tops does look like something is missing. 😊. The batting rolls took up a lot of space too but they were in a corner of a different room. I’m glad I had the batting rolls on hand because prices have increased and the website where I ordered from before has been revamped and my ordering history is gone. Good luck in choosing your next UFO. I looked through my list the other day and decided to take a break from UFOs and work on a pre-kitted project from last year which I’m going to revamp. Lol!

Conchalea 10-16-2020 06:37 PM

I think contributions from K & me are in the past. We have completed all the tops her daughter made since 2000. I have a couple of my own, so I may have 1 for Oct. I started quilting it earlier this week. I've bee under the weather tho, with a tooth extraction that developed a dry socket. I've been in too much pain to sew very much. I think it's getting better, so I may be able sew in the next few days.

Panchita 10-17-2020 01:37 AM

Oh I hope you feel better soon Conchalea, that sounds absolutely no fun at all!

I think this can be considered a UFO as it was pre kitted last year...just saying!

Ouch..it will get better.

Oh my folks, that means we will have to get in gear to make up for the projects you have finished with your friend K!

Help help admins! We're getting spammed!

Sync 10-17-2020 12:06 PM

They’ll get around to it ......... but this is the first time I have seen someone spam with 15 posts in a row!!!!! Have to wonder how many other threads this spammer got to.

retiredteacher09 10-17-2020 04:57 PM

Yikes! I hope someone reported this scammer. I have reported a few lately by tapping the red triangle.

retiredteacher09 10-17-2020 05:09 PM

Conchalea: Ouch to your tooth pain. I’m glad you are starting to feel better.

oksewglad: I didn’t even think about the fact that the project I kitted last year could be considered in UFO land! I hadn’t started it so that’s probably why it didn’t dawn on me. Lol! However, I decided to start another pre-kitted project and will need to see if I put a kitted date on it. I’m trying to be more diligent about recording things like start and end dates just for the fun of it. 🤷‍♀️

cherrybsixty 10-18-2020 04:01 AM

Good Sunday morning UFO'ers, boy what a way to wake up to a scammer, technology.

My DD just told me that she would fly me home (Kansa) for Christmas and there is a UFO in my pile that I want to take back as a gift so I better get cracking.
Conchalea, I hate to hear of your pain, they say those dry sockets are not fun, take care of yourself

I was going to try church again today but my right foot is a little sensitive so I'll just stay off of it, just sit and sew at the FW

Have a blessed day y'all

Click the little triangle sign with the exclamation point and report these spams. I reported it last night but now there are even more. This on is tame compared to some of the spams on other threads! (Porn)

retiredteacher09 10-18-2020 04:13 PM

I reported it now too. I have seen some of those other spams and reported them.

I am very disappointed that these were not removed. It is Monday morning and I reported them on Saturday. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...s/confused.png

Looks like our Spam person is no longer with us. Hurrah! Back to our UFO's. Today my day to pick my next UFO to finish and I just stumbled about and found a 100 + 5 inch green squares and about 25 white squares. I have no idea why I cut them or what my intent was. They will be made into HST's, with the addition of more white of course and put into a barn raising pattern, one of my favorites. Another donation quilt, I guess. More stuff out of the UFO basket and out of my stash. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

Teen 10-19-2020 06:18 PM

Love the orphan block quilt, retiredteach...

Thanks, Krisb.... appreciate your tracking despite the personal challenges. Hoping all is well since you could return home.

i finished all the blocks for the gazillion HST quilt I’m working on. It’s on point so this week I’ll be cutting setting triangles and assembling. Then the applique begins. It sat for a couple,of weeks while I worked on landscaping projects...but, I’m back to it.
