Oct post #1204 Load of scrap!

How it started and why it stalled This was a design as you go (aka flying by the seat of my pants). A while ago I made several scrappy spool blocks, then had to decide what to do with them and set them in the rows with a dark spacer between. Pulled out the gold as a horizontal sashing between the rows and a all around border. What next? I had the dark light HST's laying around so adjusted my gold borders to accommodate the HST's. In January 2020 it sat....I found some log cabin blocks for another border, so the gold border went on to fit the LC blocks. I like larger quilts to fit beds and this wasn't big enough so scrounged around and found the dark blue fabric that I could make wider borders from. It is 84 x 91 inches. Then it sat...

And then In early October I...What should I use for a backing? I call this a utilitarian quilt to use up fabric and didn't want to buy backing fabric or use some of my nicer pieces for the backing. I was able to piece the back with the blue and gold widened by a floral piece. After LA'ng it I figured I had enough from the backing and leftovers to make my binding. There is very little left from the 3 pieces used on the back. Lots of stash fabric used in this! Sashay pantograph from Urban Elementz was used.

Tried to eliminate the extra photos...sorry.

Great hanging system and a beautiful quilt, oksewglad!

Oksewglad - those are great quilts! I especially love the second one, so pretty https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

Oct post #1210 Stars in the News

How it began In January of 2019 I declared it the year of the triangle (waste triangles that is). Earlier I had made a couple of wonky red star blocks and made a few more at that time.

Why it stalled And then it sat. This winter I pulled out the few blocks and added some more. Soon I had 72 blocks and was running out of the red stash fabric. Now what to do...and then it sat.

And then In August I decided to finish it up and struck upon the idea of sashing with some newsprint fabric in stash. In my EQ program I played with layouts and decided on 3" sashes between each block and had enough to sash and border the quilt. I decided to use colored scraps as cornerstones. Oh but what if I make wonky stars with the corner stones. Lots of waste triangles used up! Meanwhile browsing in a LQS I found a red KFasset fabric and said...hmm I wonder if this is the right red. Bought a piece of it and no it wasn't quite the same...but with the newsprint it was far enough away and it would work so ran back and got enough for a 5" border. While showing the top to another quilter, the suggestion was ditch the newsprint border add a yellow and then the KF piece. Voila here it is...

WMUTeach 11-02-2020 05:57 PM

Oksewglad, I am mightily impressed with both quilts. The first one is so scrappy but it looks like you planned it from the beginning. All of the different components compliment each other so well. You display area is getting some good use!.

Sync 11-02-2020 06:40 PM

oksewglad, those quilts are bright and cheerful. Congrats on your finishes.

rryder 11-03-2020 06:33 AM

They're both fantastic quilts, Oksewglad. I loved reading the story behind them. Congratulations on both finishes.

Rob

retiredteacher09 11-03-2020 07:23 AM

oksewglad: Wonderful finishes! I remember you saying last year was going to be the year of waste triangles. I was only thinking of actually making them into HST’s but now I realize they can be used as corner cover ups also. 🤷‍♀️ I certainly don’t need another project but I’m going to make a sample block today. Lol!

I’m enjoying the stories in how quilts became UFO’s from different people. Thank you everyone for inspiring us with those stories.

Teen 11-03-2020 09:33 AM

Great finishes, OK! I admire the fact that you piece so small... you remind me of Bonnie Hunter... Your stars quilt is awesome!

oksewglad 11-04-2020 06:22 AM

Thanks for everyone's kind comments. These have been long term projects and I have enjoyed the process on each one.

Connie in regards to the corner cover up triangles. I did not trim the excess away refusing to create more waste triangles and it just adds extra warmth to the quilt. I didn't encounter any problems stitching or quilting the excess. Oh and I do have a HST quilt in progress made with finished 1" and 1 1/4" dark light triangles. Still working on blocks of those...that might be the next one to finish piecing.

Meanwhile I have a charm quilt made of 3" 9P's pinned to the LA waiting for some quilting!

retiredteacher09 11-04-2020 06:48 PM

oksewglad: I chuckled when you said you left the bottom triangles on and it gives extra warmth because our church quilting leader used to say that about all of the threads we worried about on the backs of the quilts. ❤️ I like 2” squares/HSTs and larger although I do use 1.5” when needed in a block. Just not my favorites.

retired...I broke out in hives when you mentioned “all the threads on the back”. Clipping threads is my least favorite step in quilting.. ugh!

retiredteacher09 11-05-2020 06:23 PM

Teen: I should have said the threads on the back of the top. 🤷‍♀️ I have only finished a few quilts but I don’t like the threads that need to be tucked in or cut off from the back either.

I am working on 2 UFOs currently. I kitted them up last year. Unfortunately, I have misplaced one of the finished crazy patch blocks from one of the kits. I only have 9 of them. Where, or where, did I lay that block? Lol! My sewing area is clean for me so I’m thinking it can’t be far.

cherrybsixty 11-06-2020 02:49 AM

Good morning everyone, it's been a few days since I had a little input. the storm blew through last week and tore somethings up around in the community but only knock the power out for a couple hours in the neighborhood. The new great-grand was born on his expected date (October 20th) and weighed in at 8 pounds and 1 ounce. He is a big boy and a handsome little guy. I've only seen pictures of him, they live in Nevada.

So with that being said, I have finished the hand-embroidery baby bib, and I've machine bind a laptop quilt, (one that I thought was completed in May) and I completed packing his gifts to be shipped to him. Then I finished the aprons and I have them packed and they will ship out on Saturday. The box for the masks is almost full, not quite the number of them that I want to ship, yet. I have the sewing room set-up like I want it and I settled and had the sewing machine brought into the space.

Now, I am set for the gift giving, mask sharing, and the aprons it's time to break out something new (UFO) and get it handled. Everyone have a productive day and stay safe

cherryb

retiredteacher09 11-06-2020 04:09 PM

cherrybsixty: Wahoo to getting the sewing machine in your room and being caught up on many things. I’m looking forward to eventually seeing your finished UFO.

I found my missing crazy patch block. I finally took the time to go through my ‘trim’ pile again and, sure enough, that’s where it was hiding. Lol! I didn’t make much progress on either UFO today.

Conchalea 11-07-2020 10:01 AM

I'm reporting late, but I completed my butterflies quilt on Oct. 30! I have it on my bed now, in spite of it looking spring-like.
It became a UFO in my mind because the top was finished in June of this year. But I folded it once it was sandwiched & put it in my closet while K & I worked on her daughter's tops. We got all those finished & donated, so that helps our community. After those were done, I pulled out the quilt & quilted it.
I now only have some panels ready to quilt. Those have been purchased in the last few weeks, so they won't qualify as UFOs. I have no UFOs here at the end of 2020.

Teen 11-07-2020 01:33 PM

Congratulations on no UFO’s at the end of 2020. You and K kicked potootie and are now is the hands in of those in need. So awesome!

oksewglad 11-07-2020 02:54 PM

I'm impressed Conchalea! You and Teen are two of a kind. Unfortunately I am not.

My next quilt will be a UFO finish not really by choice, but that's not all bad. A couple of weeks ago my older brother had a minor house fire. Because of the location of the fire next to a shared wall the house is not livable at time. He was in rehab for minor smoke inhalation and burns and is ready for the next step. Hopefully he will be move into an assisted living program. MrOK and I cleaned out what was salvageable...not much as there was smoke and water damage. Now that I have some things cleaned up for him it's time to get to some quilting! I found a UFO quilt I started when we moved into the house 13 years ago! It will fit his needs perfectly...a masculine quilt made from shirtings and some black and burgundy. It was supposed to be for the family room down stairs, but the Grands have nabbed onto all sorts of quilts for when they are down here so I won't miss it and it is about half done. Less time for me to spend on getting a quilt done for him to. Now back to my regularly scheduled quilting!

Conchalea 11-07-2020 05:39 PM

Ok, you have been powering through some pretty UFOs! You are working pretty hard. Congratulations

retiredteacher09 11-08-2020 04:40 PM

oksewglad: I’m sorry to hear about your brother’s health after a fire. I’m sure he was thankful that MrOk and you could help. Wahoo to finding the UFO that will work for him.

rryder 11-09-2020 02:44 PM

Oksewglad- I’m so sorry to hear about your brother’s house fire and health issues. I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Rob

oksewglad 11-09-2020 04:03 PM

Thanks for the caring, folks. He is doing fine; just minor injuries. Meanwhile I've been trying to salvage some items...not much though.

Hoping all works out for your brother, OK. Very scary...

Teen 11-12-2020 05:10 PM

Today, I got so frustrated with my applique border (did not like the look of it) that I ripped it out, cut the 8” border to a 3” border and prepped it for LA’er. This quilt really doesn’t need the applique border so...good thing...cuz it is done. And, the size change is not a big deal.. so, I am moving on to new project... I may spend some time making a baby quilt using the “triangles” that were created when I squared an on-point quilt I made a couple of months ago. It’s soft colors so it should be a pretty little scrappy quilt.

oksewglad 11-12-2020 07:19 PM

Great save on the border...you know you will like it better with no regrets, Teen. Nice save on the baby quilt with LO triangles!

I finished the top for my brother. I found a simple scrappy 9P quilt top my sister had made for Project Linus, but that's as far as she got with it. She passed away in June and I think I can find a couple of border fabrics to make it for our brother. He'll appreciate having a quilt from her since the ones she had made for him were damaged.

Meanwhile I have a UFO on the LA. Has some issues with the panto I was using so ripped out 3 rows of stitching and Wednesday night started with a different design. Going to run down and work on the LA now.

Teen 11-13-2020 01:23 PM

Ok...oh, what an awesome quilt to make your brother. So sad that hers were lost in fire. You have such a sweet heart...

retiredteacher09 11-13-2020 06:56 PM

oksewglad: Your brother will cherish that new quilt when given to him.

I’m making progress on my 2 UFOs. I hope to have at least one top done in a couple of days. Our church quilting group can’t meet again because the church is closed through November because of some staff cases. Ugh! So I will make the tops and store them until we can get in the room to quilt again.

November Finish

Ta-Dah! A UFO finish for November! It has been a while since I posted a UFO finish. This one was my first January quilt but it just hung in my closet until November. Hope to get one more in this month. Fingers crossed.

oksewglad 11-15-2020 01:04 PM

Well done WMUTeach

retiredteacher09 11-15-2020 04:42 PM

WMUTeach: Very pretty! Congratulations on your finish.

joe'smom 11-15-2020 06:50 PM

Congrats, WMUTeach! I love pink and black together. It always makes me think of chic Parisian women in pink suits and high heels, LOL.

Excellent finish, WMUTeach!

My current ufo...kitted up at least 3 yrs ago. I ran out of green for the blocks so whipped up those substitutes in the corners. Now just to sash and assembly.
it was supposed to be for my nephew (19) but somehow it's not screaming young man to me. I may finish the top and then closet / reUFO until the home appears. Maybe when he's ready to graduate!
Work has been such a bear. My sewing machine is my refuge.

Teen 11-17-2020 06:27 PM

Great job, so far, Rff1010.... I like the color combo and the creative corner blocks. Must feel good to get to a 3yr old kitted project. Woohoo!

OOO-La La! I had not thought of the pink/black inference but it sure fits. Thanks for the smile!

Rff1010: I like your quilt. Great save for the corners. It’s a good thing you have your sewing machine for your refuge.

Rff1010, I love your improvised corners. They look great!

I finished 2 UFO tops recently. They will go into the church quilting box for the group to finish.

Both were kitted up last year. The first one has 7” and 10.5” blocks in it. The plain squares were cut years ago by the church group and the pieced blocks were added by me over the years when I take one of my ‘need to sew simple’ breaks. 🤷‍♀️ The second one was cut with the 10.5” Crazy Quilt die.
