The first has a very graphic almost Ghee's Bend look to it. How hard was it to sew the Crazy pieces together. Good way to use up those odd shaped pieces! Well done C.
|
Thanks, oksewglad. I had to look up Ghee’s Bend. Interesting. As for the crazy quilt, I cut a bunch of different fabrics into 13.5” squares and put 5 on my AccuQuilt Crazy Quilt die and run them through the die cutting machine. Then repeat. Corners fit perfectly together and it’s a great leader/ender project. Once I have a stack of 10, I move the top one down, then 2 down on the next stack, etc, so only one print/ plain shape ends up in each block. Sometimes, I mess up in my sewing and need to unstitch. Lol!
|
That's what I hear about the Accuquilt pieces that they fit together so well.
|
retiredteacher, what interesting quilts! I'm seeing an illusion in the second one -- if that grid were removed, all of those pieces would spill out onto the floor.

Nov. UFO finish!!!
The Big Butterfly is finished! I finished binding it on Nov. 30 and then let it sit for a few days while I decided if I wanted to do any tweaking. No to tweaking, so it will count as a Nov. finish. Will post pics later this evening or tomorrow morning.

Bravo and Congratulations Rob on that 'Big Butterfly' finish and a safe and merry christmas to you
Stay safe everyone cherryb |
Has there been a discussion on this list recently about the longest-term UFO that you finally finished? I began a Hawaiian quilt in 1989. I put it away for years while I learned to spin (yarn) and was very involved with that. Then I brought it out again, finished the applique, and over a year ago I began echo quilting the whole thing by hand. It's queen size -- WHAT was I thinking?? I was obviously a whole lot younger then and apparently a lot more ambitious. At the rate it's going, I hope to finish the quilting and binding by . . . what . . . next summer sometime?
|
Rob- congratulations on the Big Butterfly! I'm happy it's done, since I liked it in the unfinished state. I look forward to seeing it completed.
Synnove- wow. You were ambitious! I don't do any hand quilting, even binding. Hand work is what I do with knit & crochet projects. Good luck with this long-term project. I guess you're not planning a December 2020 finish! |
Rob: Congratulations! I’m looking forward to a picture.
Synnove: Have fun finishing your Hawaiian UFO! Please share your progress with us. |
Rob, congratulation on finish. It's been an active quilt for a long time.

Hey y'all, here it a picture of the Big Butterfly.
It was a UFO for a good long while and then this past spring I decided to finish it. What I thought was going to be a March or April finish ended up taking until Nov. 30---and not because I wasn't working on it. I lost many battles with it, but finally, I think, I won the war https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png Thanks for looking, Rob |
Oh my *gosh* Rob, that's amazing!!! When you said 'Big Butterfly' I never dreamed it would be so super-realistic! I absolutely love the quilting - it looks kind of like a Ginko leaf? It's really art. Wow.
|
Rob....incredible work.... it’s unique and so realistic...quilting is amazing...

Rob I think you've out done yourself, Rob! Words seem inadequate. |
Rob, the butterfly was worth the wait & the struggles. It's fantastic!
|
Thanks y'all. This is the only quilt that I've ever considered giving up on. Glad I didn't.
Rob |
Very intense quilting rryder...beautiful butterfly.
|
OMG ............ Rob that is absolutely amazing. So glad you did not give up on it.
|
Rob: Awesome finish! Congratulations for sticking with it.
|
Wow, Rob! That looks absolutely fantastic!! Do you plan to display it? Or are you just still so glad to have it done you haven't moved on to the 'and now it goes...' stage yet, lol. Anyway, you should feel very proud of yourself. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png
|
Wow Rob, I've seen prior pictures of the butterfly but your finish is truly amazing. I didn't realize it was 3D. What a piece of art.👏
|
After ripping stitches for over three hours, last night I pulled a long UFO off the LA..had lots of issues with the pantograph and it overstitching on the previous row. Not sure how it happened. But it's done except for trimming and binding which will be put off. Have the backing and batting on the La for the next quilt. Hope to work on it after work tonight.
|
OKsewglad, that must have been so frustrating. I have picked out enough quilting to weep and mourn with you. You sound ready to forge ahead with that second quilt ready to go already! Whoopie!
I have laid out some UFO's to finish before the end of the year. Looking to finish at least one and perhaps another. Once Christmas week arrives, I should be free to be very focused on getting a quilt off the UFO pile and on the donate pile. |
Oksewglad- I know how frustrating that can be. Congratulations on getting it done and out of your hair!!!
Rob |
Thanks for your encouraging words, WMUTeach and rryder! What's frustrating is the second to last row has also overlapped; the last row is nice and even across the quilt. I am debating on whether to rip out the last half of the offending row at a later time and resew. This is a charm quilt (meaning no 2 fabrics alike in the 1 1/2" 9P's) that I have worked on and off over several years and one of my "special" quilts.
That being said I am off to finish pinning on the next quilt and use a different pantograph! |

What kind of fabric did you use for the wings? How big is it? It's like looking at a photo. |
oksewglad: Oh my to fixing a quilt top with 1.5” 9 patches. Great idea to use a different pantograph.

The fabric underneath (which you can’t see due to the amount of thread painting) is cotton. Yes, it is trapunto. The entire piece is approx. 27” x 37”. I did the free motion thread painting on my domestic machine using a bunch of different kinds of thread from my stash. But I did the final quilting over the trapunto butterfly with my Sweet Sixteen as there is no way a domestic machine would be able to go through the thickness - several inches of wool under the butterfly + batting and backing. Almost finished with the next quilt on LA...work today and tomorrow so not going to get much done on it, |
oksewglad: Whew! I know you do a lot with small squares. Bless your heart for using those teeny-tiny pieces of fabric. I do keep 1.5" squares and strips but mostly use the strips in strip blocks to frame smaller blocks in a scrappy way. I'm actually using up a bunch of the strips now to frame my Sesame Street squares (about 3.5" starting size) to get to a finished size of 10.5". I have no clue what someone was planning to make with the squares but my goal is to get them into the bigger size within a week.
I'm hoping to start on another UFO soon but can't decide which one to choose. |

I found this block on Pinterest and adapted it to use 3.5" and 1.5" cuts for a 7" finished block. You would need two 3.5" squares; one 3.5 x 7.5 rectangle; one 1.5 x 7 rectangle and one 1.5 x 3.5 rectangle.
Adding any width frames on 2 or all 4 sides could prove interesting, |
OK, thanks for the measurements. Black really sets off the colors used in your example.
I had a virtual visit with my dr & got a round of steroids. I felt better after the first day, so I did some sewing on a Christmas tree wall hanging I'm making as a surprise for my friend, K. I'm using scraps from Fat Quarter Shop's Jelly Snowflake quilt. Although, as a science teacher, I can't call mine a snowflake. The finished quilt has 8 points, and all snowflakes have 6 points. So I call mine Frozen Fractal since it is a pleasing geometric shape. (Just not a snowflake!) I'm cutting the 2.5" inch strips into squares for the tree body & using beige strips for background, plus some brown scraps from my stash. No fabric has been purchased for this project! It may completely deplete my Christmas fabric, causing a slight reduction in my fabric closet. |
oksewglad: Thanks for the idea. I will add that to my block files. While I was mindlessly sewing, it dawned on me that I would get to my 10.5” size quicker if I sewed 4 of the unevenly cut squares together into a bigger square. Duh! 🤷♀️ Plus I’m saving a lot of time in sewing, ironing, and trimming since I had 24 blocks that I hadn’t started to frame and now they are 6 blocks! Wahoo! I do have quite a few of the original to finish but the end is in sight,
Conchalea: I’m glad you are feeling better. I didn’t make the ‘snowflake’ but I would not have thought about the number of points. |
Yikes, stop with all the good ideas, Oksewglad! I have too many UFO's now. I counted 6 hanging in my closet and there are at least three, no four WIP. I just can't allow myself to create another! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png Tee-Hee-Hee! Good looking block. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

I have 2 WIP but one is BH mystery quilt so I’m good. All my Christmas sewing is done, shipped, and under “The Mom’s” trees. So, I get to play thru the rest of the season. I cannot tell you how happy this makes me! |

Thanks for the block comments....we are enablers aren't we?https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png But the one 1 1/2" piece should be 7 1/2" not 7; sorry, but you are all so smart you would've known I was wrong! I have a bunch of 3 1/2" squares and thinking this would help reduce thesehttps://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png
I'm off to the LA and get another quilt off the frame before I start the next. Had a catch in my back and did a couple of side bends last night and voila I took the pressure off and feels much better...thought a trip to the chiro was in order...guess not now. Keep getting those UFO's taken care of so you can start some new quilts. |
I went to the fabric store and someone was stressing because her normal long armer was "out of commission". She wasn't sure what to do but fortunately I had used a different person and with a little digging I was able to find the name. At least she can get her ufos finished now!
|
I report a finished UFO. It has been waiting for more than a year. Now you can see it in the Pctures forum with the title "Nobody Is Perfect". I am so happy that I finally broke a no-quilting spell that had lasted since May. I hope to finish two more quilts (one of them a UFO) before the end of the year.
|
Will go check your post, Vasilisa..congrats on your finish.
I sewed the binding of a UFO last night...maybe get pictures later today. I've been out of commission with a stomach flu for the past 4 days..no fun. Have another binding to add to a second UFO. will see how I feel today. Here's the link to Vasilisa's UFO post https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...t-t313510.html |
