I tested the HST paper and worked great. Man...if you wiggle off the line even a little bit ...sure messes up measurements. I ended up using the scant 1/4" directions and they came out perfect. I'm sold.

Welcome, Panchita! Congratulations on getting your picture to post.
ckcowl: You are on a roll. Way to go. |
Beautiful tree skirt, Panchita! And welcome to the UFO challenge!

Yeh!!!! Got a UFO quilted. Tomorrow, I can bind it. ....Making progress....Should be finished for June count.
|
NZquilter--your quilt is absolutely GORGEOUS! I think the lesson learned for me is you really succeeded by using the white cotton you had. T.hanks for sharing.

ckcowl, I'm curious about the 17 yr. old UFO you keep putting away. What sort of pattern is it?
Beautiful Irish chain quilts, ladies! I've been concentrating on finishing a binding, and should have a finish in July. After hemming and hawing for three years, I finally have a new sewing machine. I was used to a mechanical machine, but all of the mechanical machines they make now have the lower side bobbin, which I couldn't insert or remove with my RA fingers. So I chose a computerized Juki with a drop-in bobbin; it should help me be a faster piecer. I did love my old Singer, but it couldn't handle thick seams, so I spent a lot of time trying to push things under the presser foot, and had to do lots of re-stitching. |
Enjoy your new Juki, Joe'sMom... I have a mechanical Juki I love, the 2010Q. I also have a Juki longarm. They are great machines.

it was a class I signed up for - supposed to be (4) 2 hour classes at a little local shop. When we signed up and paid $50 we were given a homework sheet. Then class started the next week. I spent a lot of money on the fabrics for this project the homework was cutting everything into 1 1/2” & 3 1/2” strips- including a queen size batt. The first class we started sewing our first ( logs- top, bottom, batting strips) together using decorative stitches. I loved my fabrics and enjoyed that start. Second class we all arrived (8 of us) but the instructor didn’t. The shop owner apologized and sent us home, next week we received a call saying the instructor decided not to come back- and she had taken all the money- the shop could not reimburse us. all of those strips have been in its box every since. A few years ago I pulled out the pattern & for whatever reason just couldn’t wrap my head around it. I’m sure part of it is just the experience. I haven’t signed up for a class since. I still love the fabrics and remind myself I invested $300 on this project. Maybe I will just decide one day that I’m going to figure it out and make it. |
The instructor bailed with the.money?? Criminal!

Thanks for the warm welcome https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png
I'm loving hearing and seeing people's stories and seeing the beautiful quilts. ckcowl's story though: I have no words. What appalling behaviour from the instructor! I can see why that would sap your mojo. I suspect the best motivator for me in that situation would be revenge - as in, I'm going to figure this out to spite the instructor!!!. I managed to progress further with the handquilting on the tree skirt - I did 3 'snowmen' outlines, and now have 6 out of 8 planned Christmas tree outlines done. I plan on adding some stars in the other cream spaces - not sure what I'll do in the red yet... (will try to attach photo - difficult to show the quilting, even though the guidemarks haven't been washed out yet - I'm happy with the effect in real life though) |

Everyone started posting their June finishes and I got off my lazy butt and finished the blind stitching on the label for my "Quilt of Many Colors"
Dolly Parton for president! 70x90" - a generous twin size. Now - here is the question. I made it in a fit of Covid Anxiety (I know its not the only one out there) but I wanted to donate to charity. Specifically my local Woman's Shelter. 1) do I just call them up and say "hey I made this"? Or 2) do I try and sell thru eBay and donate proceeds. Yes I realize its my choice but there is a fundamental issue- cash will help more individuals but the quilt may send a greater message to the one recipient. So I'm open to hearing opinions. |
Rff, donate the quilt! It's more a piece of you. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/heart.gif
|
What a story, ckcowl! No wonder you kept putting it back in the drawer. Imagine what kind of impression that would make on a beginner quilter.
Very nice, Rff1010! |
Rff1010: I would say donate it. Very pretty.
Panchita: I like your outlines. ckcowl: Oh how sad. I have heard of The Cotton Theory but will need to look it up so I understand it. joe’s mom: Enjoy your new machine. |
That sounds like an awful experience, ckcowl! How sad!
Your tree skirt is beautiful, Panchita. I love the red and white combo. Great scrappy, Rcf1010! I would donate it instead of sell it. I think it would bring so much cheer and hope to someone who needs it. Congratulations on the new machine, Joe's mom. I've heard a lot of good about Jukis. I'm itching to start a brand-new quilt right now. It's so hard to stay on track with the UFOs! But if I start a new one, I know from experience that the UFO circle will just keep on going! |

My first UFO for June, which I think I've already mentioned, is the baby quilt for my first great grand, a girl, due in September. This was all made with fabric I acquired during the first few weeks of quarantine.

The pictures were taken to show the FMQ on the quilt, which I finished for Pat Sloan's June challenge of quilting our own quilts.
The next UFO was the one finished by me for my friend. Her daughter made 20+ tops, with this being the only one she quilted. I guess she discovered she didn't like quilting. I did the binding on it. Since finishing this one, I showed my friend how to quilt, and she finished another of her daughter's tops on Sunday. I then showed her how to do the binding, which she finished. It's not my finish, but maybe it will count? She's thrilled to be finishing some of these tops. She wants to donate them to a local women's shelter. |
Great, Conchalea! I just love your fabrics! I know you can’t wait for that baby to get here.

No finished for June from me. I have one that needs a binding, a second that is not a UFO that needs a binding, quilting on a barn raising at the moment and three mystery quilts. Lots of work done but no finishes UFO....yet! Perhaps over the week-end.https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif

Conchalea: I like your quilt and the quilting. I follow Pat Sloan but didn’t do any of the quilting practice. Someday I may go back and try free motion quilting again. I’m glad you showed your friend how to quilt the tops and do the binding.

Didn't get the binding on, so no June finishes
|
Conchalea, those colors are so pretty together!

Good afternoon everyone, I thought I'd better check-in, but no finish for me for June. Just the big move and I'm still trying to put the sewing room together. The biggest thing here is to dissolve that, "ole-folks scent" that the younger generation mentions all the time.
But, what I'd like to work on is the two UFO's from earlier this year (just before the move) and the Arkansas Crossroads from three years ago. Really, I need to locate my best cutting shears and my two rotary cutters. Two of the girls went with me last Saturday to the storage and we clean somethings up and did some re-arranging. But, no shears or cutters. Well, hopefully everyone start off to a better start for July than I and have a bless month Stay safe everyone cherryb |
Conchalea....so cute and fab quilting! You are back in the swing of things! September is fast approaching!
Cherry...Hi!!! Waving!!! You'll get organized soon and find all your lovely tools and notions. It must we awesome to be there with your family.. Enjoy! |

Teen, my friend keeps saying how much fun she's having! Yesterday we found a big sandwiched quilt, but with double layers of batting, making it super heavy. Her daughter had started hand-tieing the thing but fortunately didn't get too far. We deconstructed it & removed 1 layer of batting, which had smaller pieces laid in it to fill the size. Coffee had been spilled on it, which may be why it ended up unfinished. The top has been washed, but the stain is still visible. We'll try again to remove it. Two layers of batting is just too heavy, both for us to quilt & for our area of Texas. But that extra layer will go inside another UFO from the closet, so it won't go to waste. My friend has an 8 foot table, which is great to work on. Together we basted my 2nd baby quilt, which I hope to quilt today. I didn't know how much fun it is to quilt with a friend, versus alone! I'm having a great time.

Cute baby quilt. Sounds like y’all are having lots of fun, Conchalea.
