I have the total August UFO count- 8! I forgot the vintage cats in my earlier count. Some August finishes have already left the building. 1. A friend took an unfinished top 2. Her husband claimed Plaid Lad, in first greens & browns 3. Ziggurat, layered in a fashion that made me think of Mayan pyramids (which are actually called ziggurats) 4. Strawberry fields, mostly pinks 5. Flower Power, orange & pink flowers with same color solids in a rail fence pattern 6. Prairie Points, a really long, narrow center of around the world. I think the daughter ran out of that fabric collection since we didnt find anymore of it. K will use it for a table runner for her 8-ft table 7. Autumn Star, just completed yesterday. Maroon & red stars on a patterned background. 8. The vintage cats.
I have pictures on my phone which I must transfer to my computer before I can upload. They're too large on my phone & have to be resized. We have 3 tops left! There are also several separate blocks we plan to put into another quilt. So we still have work to do. In all, we've completed 25 UFOs since the middle of June. It's certainly kept us busy & out of the heat. |
Woah, doggy is that a lot for one month! Wondering what our total is for the month of August? We will find out soon, I am sure.
|
I went back in the posts to August 1, & I think we had 19 UFO finishes for the month. That's not a final count, but it's probably close. So good job! It was too hot here to be outside, so staying inside was a great time to work on quilts. It finally started raining here yesterday, after 6 weeks of no rain at all. We went from zero to flash flood watch in 7 hours! Our watch lasts for 26 more hours unless it escalates. So now the rain is an excuse to stay in & sew!

To reward myself i sewed the binding down on 3 long time ufo potholders! A 15 minute job and some extra space in my space...well a little extra space!

here's the rwb rail fence 2 pieced from 2" scrap pieces started a while ago. I figure about 15% of my fabrics are in the center blocks, the remaining scraps of others. I pulled most of the strips from the 2" bin and cut a few of the gold pieces from larger scraps. It will be passed to the local qov group for finishing and considered a finish for me. Now to finish up the red dye disaster quilt!

well, i said the other day that i was here for the conversation, the apron making that i'm getting completed were cut-out years ago, one of them was cut out in 2013 and the other one from 2018, now that one i have finished and i'm working on the 2013. It's a gem, all silver and glittery. It's going to make some girl smile, for sure. Taking my time with that one, cause i want to stir some attention with it.
That all the conversation i can stir up this evening, so y'all stay safe cherryb

I guess i am going to be the long armer for the 2 rail fence quilts flimsies i have finished for our local qov. Got the backing for the first one today (post # 1054) and will see what i should use on the red dye disaster quilt on tuesday when i got to work. I might use yardage instead of wide backing.

my single august finish!
The quilt: the true origin of this quilt is lost in the sands of time, but somehow, someway, i obtained a set of thangles in a very odd size (1.75" finished), drew out a whole lot of 4x4 hst patterns on graph paper, obtained a set of vibrant food-focused fat quarters, and started putting together blocks utilizing all of the above. why it became a ufo: for years and years, this project was my "ender/leader" project. A thangled strip would sit there next to the machine, ready to start and end any set of strip piecing i happened to be working on. Ever so slowly, by dribs and drabs, the blocks started getting done, but sometimes i would put them aside and use other projects for enders/leaders, so even that method of continuing this quilt was stalled. why i finally finished: this poor thing had suffered long enough. At the point of my 2020 ufo push, it had most of the blocks complete, a few forlorn strips sitting in the box waiting, some backing fabric ready...it was time to just get 'er done. So i went ahead and put together the last couple of blocks, then started putting them together. I liked the idea of the silverware pattern as cornerstones, but looking at it now, i wish i had used one of the brighter pieces. I wish i had made four more blocks and made the quilt one row longer. But i do love the border! That really brought it together. The quilt needed something to give it a wow factor, too, because the blocks themselves...eh. Having worked on this quilt for years, the blocks are constructed with vastly different levels of competence, from nightmarishly amateur to pretty sparkling, but hopefully no one will look too closely at the seams and such. I had the most devil of a time quilting the thing. My machine, very recently fully serviced, just would not act right. Thread kept breaking, despite multiple fixes attempted. I grabbed my machine's registration card and realized that i got it in 2007. Is 13 years old long in the tooth for a janome 6600? Do i need to start thinking of a new machine? the quilt's fate: i gave this one to some friends of mine who like to provide food at our gatherings. They loved it! Still five quilts on my ambitious list...

i have a finish to add to the august count! Finally completed the binding on this quilt, pieced in 2014 and quilted at the beginning of the year. (actually, i'm jumping the gun a bit, as i still have to wash it, which i plan to do in the morning.)

good morning all! (well, it's morning here, lol)
i have a finish!! Finally done with my christmas tree skirt - yay! Copying quossum's report style (because i find the approach interesting, albeit my content may be less so...) quilt origin - i've wanted to make a christmas tree skirt pretty much since i started quilting in the late 90s. It took until maybe 2-3 years ago for me to actually start one (not too sure on exact start date). I love the carpenters star block, and knew i wanted to do a massive one for this project. why it became a ufo - my quilting time has been rather stop-start for the past few years, and i would pick it up again in late nov/early dec thinking "must get that finished this year", do a bit, christmas would arrive and leave, and i'd put it aside thinking "i'll do it for next year"... In all fairness this is my 'newest' ufo - the others i have are all working on a decade plus of neglect, lol. It's not as if this is the most difficult project i've attempted, which is possibly part of the issue, in that i would think i'll fly through finishing it and then.... Not. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/hunf.png why i finally finished - i'm actually positively trying to put aside time for quilting the past couple of months (well, since the virus lockdown really) since i know it is good for my mental health. It was at 'top put together, but not quilted yet' stage. Since i handquilted it (which i'm rather proud of) it took a little longer than it might have, but it is now finally all done. quilt's fate - being put with the christmas decorations to be used round our tree this year! Hope the photos post...

Congratulations to all of you who did August finishes!👏 We can do 20 in September. I know we can. Let’s just put the pedal to the floor and do it💪 |
Thanks for the totals krisb! We can keep this up!
|
Rats, I thought I had finished a UFO this month. Well, back at it again for September. I finished three quilts but all were from stash and noted in the Moratorium Thread. How is it that days move on so quickly?
|
Great totals for August.
WMUTeach: I have been wondering how days have been moving so fast too. Funny thing is, like most of us, I have been home way more this summer than many past summers and I’m wondering why I still haven’t finished my UFOs. 🤷♀️ I guess it’s more fun starting and finishing new quilt tops. I hope to get a quilt top finished this month that recently went from my WIP pile to UFO. The class finished just a year ago. I use the year mark to move projects from the WIP or neglected stage to the UFO category. |
Wow, 157 finished UFOs! Thanks, Krisb. That's just 3 shy of averaging 20 per month. With the stay at home situation since early March, we have had to do something with our time. I'm impressed with this group's productivity. Keep it up! We still have 1/3 of the year left to sew UFOs.
|
Conchalea, so true that 'stay-at-home' movement put me in motion to working on new projects, but I didn't touch any of my UFO's at the time. But, now that I am getting settled into my new sewing space I really want to work on some of those UFO's. Maybe this weekend with the Virtual Quilting Weekend in action I can pull at least one out
Good numbers everyone and beautiful finishes Stay safe everybody cherryb |
I just checked to see how many quilts I have finished this year.... 23. Most used stash for top, back and batting. A few needed backing. Of the 23 finishes, I think that only three finishes are UFOs. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wave.gif I am really focusing on minimizing my stash. Perhaps it is time to focus back on UFOs for a bit. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png
|
WMUTeach: WOW! I knew you had been showing your finishes but 23? That’s awesome! The amount of stash that’s been used is an extra benefit.
I know I have been using stash too in my quilt tops. Eventually, I will need to connect with our church quilting leader and see if she has any ideas how we can get some of my quilt tops sandwiched and finished. Our quilts go to a charity and I feel bad they won’t be getting our quilts especially with the colder weather coming and the need to help people stay warm. |
Took a QOV off the LA last night. It was counted as an August finish because I didn't realize I was going to LA it. Another volunteer will put the binding on. Will try to upload from phone.

QOV on the frame.

Looks great, Gladie. Almost done!
|
This sounds like fun! I have many UFOS because I work on 3 or 4 projects at a time. Have a paper piecing project going, but can only manage an hour on it. Have a multiple size block quilt started, seems to have a million half-square triangles going, sewing masks, and have 2 baby quilts to finish. May I join you late? Thanks!
|
The more the merrier, I say, Marigold! I think that is how mine get started and then something else comes up and I don't get back to them.
|
Welcome Marigold! You can join in at any time.
|
Welcome aboard Marigold3950, we used to refer to it as a train just rolling along pick up riders as it go along. Jump on and have as much fun as you can, we do love pictures.
Stay safe everyone cherryb |
Welcome, Marigold! I’m looking forward to seeing your projects.

Still evacuated. House still OK. Maybe back home on Wednesday. I've a stack of log cabin quilts (#?) made for a different fire that will be donated to this fire's victims. And I'll finish up the ones that were stacked, unquilted and out they go.
The day before evac, took 8 quilts to the comfort quilts lady. Some day my stash will look manageable. |
Pet, you're in my thoughts in these fiery times. I have friends in Louisiana who got hit hard by Laura, & now here comes Sally! Opposite problems, but both disasters.
|
Good for you, Pet, giving 8 quilts to help others! Love that.

K just completed the binding on our 2nd UFO finish for September. The first was just a lot of blocks that had similar colors, but were all loose. We added fabric to some, trimmed & evened them up, then added blue sashing & put them into a top. It rained a lot last weekend & then we both had other things to do, so no pictures. The UFO for today was a completed top but we had to piece the back. We used 2 other blocks that coordinated with the front, so we're using up the blocks that aren't part of a quilt. We have 2 tops left plus a few more loose blocks. K insists she doesn't want to piece blocks, but I showed her string blocks & she's enthusiastic about those. So we may have a string quilt in the near future.
|
petthefabric: Sending a prayer of safety. Your quilts will be loved.
Conchalea: Congratulations on another finish! |
Good morning everyone, no I have not fell off the edge of the earth and I'm still around lurking in UFO world, right I haven't touch those aprons in a few weeks. But, I did start in on stripping my original sewing machine cabinet, using manual tools (my hands, back and knees). I haven't got it to a stage where I can't restore it yet.
Petthefabric, my prayers are with you Conchalea, you and K are doing some amazing work, please continue on Stay safe everyone cherryb |
The comfort quilt lady just informed us that the guild is collecting for the fire victims. So when I get home, off they go. Air quality still too bad to breath, so waiting a little longer.
|
K finished the binding on quilt #3 for Sept! Yesterday we pulled out the last top from the tub of fabric. This one has lots of black fabric with burgundy & beige & is 90" X 80". We didnt have a single piece large enough for the backing, so we pieced it. During our trip to the thrift store I bought a burgundy tablecloth, 60" X 84". We pieced a 2.5 yard piece of beige on either long side, plus added black pieces to each top. I'm going riding today, so we'll sandwich tomorrow & begin quilting. What will we do for tops after that? K still has fabric & sheets in her tub... But piecing, with its demands for precise seams, doesnt appeal much to her. I think we'll use a light fabric as a base for string blocks & make a string block quilt. She does like sewing those.
|
Way to go, K and Conchalea! String blocks sound like a great idea,
|
K worked on quilting the last top today. She's about 1/2 way through. We wont quilt tomorrow or Monday, because we have other things we have to do. Once we can sew again we'll finish quilting, trim it, I'll cut the binding & it will be sewn on. That will complete all the tops from her daughter.
|
Way to go Conchalea! That was quite a pile y'all finished off. All that good that went out into the world. Well done.
|
Fantastic, Conchalea! Y'all are amazing and all for a good cause, too.
Rob |
Conchalea, you and your QBuddy have been leaving us in the dust...thanks for sharing your enthusiasm.
Currently working on a new project; hope to have the last couple of seams sewn today and then put an applique on it before quilting. Today we are taking a couple of Grands to the apple orchards east of us. |
Conchalea, you and K have done some beautiful charitable work on those quilts and I'm just proud to hear the story, congratulations to your finishes
Glad, you speaking about apple orchards makes me think of the cider mill just south of Olathe Ks and the sunflower field just west of Olathe Ks, guess I'm missing home I myself will start to search out where I can rent a hand-held or palm sander and work on my sewing machine cabinet to finish it before fall, because I want to sew on it this winter Stay safe y'all cherryb |

Petthefabric.....thinking of you and worried that you may be effected. The smoke from Calif, Oregon, and Washington fires has blanketed Idaho so my air quality has been “dangerous”. We finally got a cold front and a slight wind that cleared my valley but they say smoke is coming back. So awful what is happening on the West Coast. Amazing that you are thinking of others while being effected, as well.
I finished a 4 month old quilt, finally. I whipped it out pretty quickly, but hung in my closet until I could Minky backing, then it sat with the quilter for 3 weeks, then it hung in my craft closet for 3 weeks waiting for binding. Not an official UFO to my standards but it was a close call.. Backing is a yellow Minkie and is for my disabled cousin (Down syndrome....she turns 49 this year). I had this layer cake forever.... |
Your cousin will love this...the backing alone is so soft and soothing. Well done, Teen.
|
Teen, that is so bright and cheerful, your cousin will love it.
