Good afternoon everyone, Conchalea, I just love vintage things, and the hanger is a first for me. So when you get it hung, please take a pix of it
I haven't produced much in the last few days, been a little under the weather, so I finally had to stop and go and visit a doctor. A serious muscle spasm and it wasn't letting me sleep at night, they gave me an ole shot in the hip and I'm ready to get back on that horse So, everyone have a blessed evening and stay safe cherryb |
cherrybsixty: Ouch! I’m glad you were able to get in to see the doctor.
|
Glad you’re feeling better, cherrybsixty.
Conchalea- good job on keeping fabric from going into stash by planning around it. I’m in awe of the number of quilts y’all have finished. Rob |
Rob, I am too. Also, I'm tired after every day, but we are accomplishing so much! A local church will take some quilts to hand out to folks who need one this winter & others will go to a local women's shelter. We're glad they will be used by people in need. No one needs a quilt one-it was 102 today, & will go up for the next few days. Saturday is forecast to be 106!
|
Well, well, well. Seems like many of us have finished off the low hanging UFO "fruit". Time to start reaching higher!
|
Got one UFO from 2014 sitting looking at me. Hope to work on it this week but doubt it will make the August finish deadline. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/hunf.png
|
The red dye disaster quilt top is now finished. Yeah...I thought I would be done...not sot fast. I guess I am going to be the long armer for the 2 rail fence quilts flimsies I have finished for our local QOV. Got the backing for the first one today (post # 1054) and will see what I should use on the red dye disaster quilt on Tuesday when I got to work. I might use yardage instead of wide backing.

My single August finish!
The Quilt: The true origin of this quilt is lost in the sands of time, but somehow, someway, I obtained a set of Thangles in a very odd size (1.75" finished), drew out a whole lot of 4x4 HST patterns on graph paper, obtained a set of vibrant food-focused fat quarters, and started putting together blocks utilizing all of the above. Why it became a UFO: For years and years, this project was my "ender/leader" project. A Thangled strip would sit there next to the machine, ready to start and end any set of strip piecing I happened to be working on. Ever so slowly, by dribs and drabs, the blocks started getting done, but sometimes I would put them aside and use other projects for enders/leaders, so even that method of continuing this quilt was stalled. Why I finally finished: This poor thing had suffered long enough. At the point of my 2020 UFO push, it had most of the blocks complete, a few forlorn strips sitting in the box waiting, some backing fabric ready...it was time to just get 'er done. So I went ahead and put together the last couple of blocks, then started putting them together. I liked the idea of the silverware pattern as cornerstones, but looking at it now, I wish I had used one of the brighter pieces. I wish I had made four more blocks and made the quilt one row longer. But I do LOVE the border! That really brought it together. The quilt needed something to give it a wow factor, too, because the blocks themselves...eh. Having worked on this quilt for years, the blocks are constructed with vastly different levels of competence, from nightmarishly amateur to pretty sparkling, but hopefully no one will look too closely at the seams and such. I had the most devil of a time quilting the thing. My machine, very recently fully serviced, just would not act right. Thread kept breaking, despite multiple fixes attempted. I grabbed my machine's registration card and realized that I got it in 2007. Is 13 years old long in the tooth for a Janome 6600? Do I need to start thinking of a new machine? The quilt's fate: I gave this one to some friends of mine who like to provide food at our gatherings. They loved it! Still five quilts on my ambitious list... |
Quossum: Awesome finish! I really like how you tell the stories of your finished quilts.
I was given a bunch of food fabric and had no idea how I was going to use it. Now I have an idea. Thanks! |
What a fun food quilt, Quossum! Your story reminds me of my sewing process..."Oh I can use these as leaders/enders" forgetting that I have about 3 other projects with the same idea. Yikes!
|
Congrats on that great finish, Quossom!
|
Congratulations on your fabulous finish, Quossom! I love the stories you tell about each quilt- keep em coming!
Rob |
Quossom, the food fabrics you used look wonderful in this quilt. I can imagine how pleased the recipients were!
|
Lovely quilt Quossom!
|
Great finish, Quossom! I should have a few to add to the August tally this week. K & I have discussed how to finish about 4 of the UFO tops we found, and 3 are nearly complete. The 4th top may join the other completions. We work on them until 1 of us makes some silly remark & we just laugh too hard to continue.
|
Fun quilt, Quossom. A good use of all of those brilliant foods and Thangles. Doesn't it feel terrific to check that one off the list and to gift it to some one who will enjoy the fun of it.

I have a finish to add to the August count! Finally completed the binding on this quilt, pieced in 2014 and quilted at the beginning of the year. (Actually, I'm jumping the gun a bit, as I still have to wash it, which I plan to do in the morning.)
|
Congrats, quossum and joe’s mom! You certainly saved our bacon this month!
|
K & I finished another UFO today, making 3 this week. We started another, which needed some reconstruction done to it. Not sure if we'll manage to finish it by Aug. 31 or not. Our total completions for August is 6. As I think Rf110 said in an earlier post, the easier ones were done in June or July. Now the tops take more work to finish them. Pictures should come tomorrow, I hope.
|
joe’smom: Congratulations on a pretty finish!
Conchalea: Congratulations on more finishes. I will be adding another top to my UFO list as I finished the class a year ago. 😢. I have made a little progress this month on it by adding the frames to some blocks. |
Nice finish, Joe’s Mom, congratulations!
Way to g Conchalea, y’all are truckin’ along, I hope to have a finish this month, finally have the backing fabric for the big butterly and itks sandwiched and ready to go. Rob |
Sweet quilt joe’smom and congrats on the finish. No ufo finishes for me in Aug. but it looks like I’m getting close for a Sept, finish.

Good morning all! (well, it's morning here, lol)
I have a finish!! Finally done with my Christmas tree skirt - yay! Copying Quossum's report style (because I find the approach interesting, albeit my content may be less so...) Quilt Origin - I've wanted to make a Christmas tree skirt pretty much since I started quilting in the late 90s. It took until maybe 2-3 years ago for me to actually start one (not too sure on exact start date). I love the Carpenters Star block, and knew I wanted to do a massive one for this project. Why it became a UFO - my quilting time has been rather stop-start for the past few years, and I would pick it up again in late Nov/early Dec thinking "Must get that finished this year", do a bit, Christmas would arrive and leave, and I'd put it aside thinking "I'll do it for next year"... In all fairness this is my 'newest' UFO - the others I have are all working on a decade plus of neglect, lol. It's not as if this is the most difficult project I've attempted, which is possibly part of the issue, in that I would think I'll fly through finishing it and then.... not. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/hunf.png Why I finally finished - I'm actually positively trying to put aside time for quilting the past couple of months (well, since the virus lockdown really) since I know it is good for my mental health. It was at 'top put together, but not quilted yet' stage. Since I handquilted it (which I'm rather proud of) it took a little longer than it might have, but it is now finally all done. Quilt's fate - being put with the Christmas decorations to be used round our tree this year! Hope the photos post... |
Panchita, your Carpenter's star is beautiful! I also love the pattern & have it on my bucket list, which gets longer every day...
|
Panchita...a winner for sure. The lovely HQ makes this a family heirloom to be handed down. I have a hard time working on Christmas things after the fact when the weather shuts us in.
|
That's gorgeous Panchita- your hand-quilting is amazing. Congratulations on getting it finished.
Rob |
Panchita, congrats on that lovely finish. Nice job with the hand quilting.
|
Panchita, what lovely quilting. I need to get another hand quilting project going. As much as I grumbled about my last one, 6 months later, I miss the hand work. Your tree will be gorgeous this Christmas with this skirt to show off the lights and decorations. .
|
Panchita: Congratulations on the finish. It is a lovely Christmas tree skirt and you did a great job on adding your own hand quilting touches. Thanks for the story.
|
I thought I better put my two cent in, all the finishes are really coming up gorgeous for August, congratulations everyone. I haven't worked on those aprons since the muscle spasms, still working on getting the proper set up in the sewing room. I got another plan working. But, I've enjoyed watching you all's work. Stay safe

Anyway this is not finished but I passed a milestone and am needing some pats on the back. My nephew's quilt- I finished the center piecing. It still needs its piano keys to extend top and bottom and the rest of the borders. I can see the finish line - just not there yet. |
That looks gorgeous Rff1010 - I really like the pattern https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png
|
Cherrybsixty- ouch, muscle spasms are no fun-I hope you feel better soon.
Rff1010- that’s looking good. Last night After a fierce battle, the big butterfly made it clear to me that it was not interested in being an Aug. finish https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...s/confused.png... however, I think I may emerge victorious in September... Rob |
RF1010 like your quilt. The same pattern on mine is greens. It's on the LA which is giving me trouble with tension. Mine was from a class and used a special ruler. Is there a book for that ruler?
|
I didn't use a special ruler - just a 60 degree. Cut strip sets 3" , piece pairs, and then cut pyramids. Match pyramids to make boomerang blocks. Pretend its on point to put everything together.
There is a pattern but I didn't use it. Just figured everything out from looking at the picture on the front. |
That red, white and blue quilt is coming along nicely.
|
rff...loving the red/white/blue so far. Piano key border will look awesome.
joesmom....your finish is beautiful!! Quossome....love your finish and your story... Conchalea....you and K are really cookin...that's so cool. I'm maintaining the "no UFO" so I am staying focused. I have one quilt (non-UFO) just returned from LA to get the binding on....my King quilt with the gazillion HST's is still in progress and I work on it each week..The blocks are almost done so I started doodling ideas for the applique borders. That will take some time, too. However, in between, I did the Kimberbell Mystery quilt called Love Notes. It was for 5 weeks, heavy on applique.....and is so cute...and you know Kimberbell...lots of embellishments. Keep on stitching, peeps! |
Rff, Progress is to be commended and honored. You are on your way to a September finish and we will all celebrate with you! Some quilts just don't like to be finished and we have to make them step from the UFO pile to the Done pile. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif Ask me how I know this to be true. Tee-Hee-Hee!
|
Rff, that is looking fantastic.
